When the lead runs out and it's time to get up close and personal I'll hit one or two just to satisfy my own curiousity before introducing them to the knuckle dusters and MK3 or K-Bar. Dont worry I dont think We will die just yet.

The initial particle beams are due for injection in August 2008,[2] the first attempt to circulate beam through the entire LHC is scheduled for September 10, 2008,[3] and the first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled, on October 21, 2008.

Date set for Large Hadron Collider launch - ZDNet.co.uk (http://news.zdnet.co.uk/emergingtech/0,1000000183,39458691,00.htm)

"The LHC is located in a 27km-long circular tunnel that lies beneath the Franco-Swiss border. The first attempt to circulate a beam of particles around the tunnel will take place on 10 September, according to a Thursday statement by the LHC's builders, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (Cern). This event will follow a long commissioning process that has seen the structure cooled down to 1.9° above absolute zero (-271°C)...."

there was one of these made already, 26.6 kilometers long. read something awhile back about it. they already considered the development of black holes and have a solution for it, no ending of worlds due to man made black hole. we're safe to ruin the planet another day :)

Pretty much to learn about the origins of the universe and how basically everything works in the universe. Pretty important stuff...

To elaborate a bit, the effect they're going for is generating a miniature big bang in a controlled environment, which is really the only time that matter was "created." This will give us the insight to what the first matter was in the universe, and from there we can extrapolate the history of evolution since the beginning, like the first material was carbon, carbon changed into X which later formed a planet, which evolved to form life, etc, etc (obviously much more detailed). It'll certainly give more credibility to evolution vs creationism :P

Brian Cox, a glamorous particle physicist who literally was once a rock star, told London's Daily Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/main.jhtml?view=DETAILS&grid=&xml=/earth/2008/09/05/scilhc105.xml) that he and his colleagues had been receiving death threats.
He then bluntly characterized anyone who feared the LHC would destroy the world with an unprintable term for a female body part.

Since when did physicists become so hardcore??

SR2Zero
09-09-2008, 03:08 PM
Maybe? Has anyone opened a black hole before.... errr.
Hell, at least we know if one does open we'll have about a few years to live before we're consumed, or so they say.
Honestly, I suspect that nothing will happen, or at least life changing. I wouldn't want to be around it with those huge fucking magnets holding an axe, ect.

Also, food for thought, they said that things called "strange particles" may appear, and change 'matter' as we know it. Crazy shit. Potentially world destroying experiment for "science" .. Damn is it that important to know?

Approximately 2 weeks so they can "get it up to speed" or something. Not entirely sure.

theicecreamdan
09-09-2008, 07:28 PM
The way it was explained to me is that any black hole created will be from the collapse of a tiny ass piece of an atom. Blackholes that destroy shit are the result of an entire sun collapsing. So if a blackhole does open up it won't even be big enough to collect more and more mass from the matter around it, so it won't be able to feed itself and will seal up.

BTW I read an article this morning, Steven Hawking has a $100 bet that they won't even find the particle that they are searching for with the LHC.

so let me get this straight they made a tube in hopes two partials will collide and recreate the big bang making a god partical or higgs boson. So what happens if those partials do collide and it does recreate the big bang and its alot bigger then we thought is that the fear every one is worried about?

They turned it on, but I dont think they collided any particles yet. It was just a full speed test run. FYI, the particles get to over 99.9% of the speed of light. It goes around that 29 mile circle 11,000 times a second.

They shot a beam of light through it today, it's supposed to go at the speed of light... it failed. Took a longgg time to travel the 17 mile tube.
Let's think about what you just said. They shot a beam of light and it didnt travel the speed of light. Some quandary, as light can ONLY travel at one speed. It's not light beams they're shooting, its the nuclei of Hydrogen atoms. They arent trying for full speed yet either, they just had a successful test run.

So what happens if those partials do collide and it does recreate the big bang and its alot bigger then we thought is that the fear every one is worried about?

They are not going to recreate the actual big bang. They are trying to create a situation similar to it, a MODEL. The big bang theory is the idea that all the matter in the universe was all compacted into a very tiny space.
The particle accelerator does not have enough power to compact the universe at all. So don't worry about another big bang.
