View Full Version : First time moving out

So it's about damn time, I'm finally moving out and i'm super excited about it. :aw:

I'll be living in long beach literally across the street from roscoes, downtown, the beach.

I can practically bike and walk everywhere especially for my necessities.

the place is super perfect. it's a 2 bed 2 bath place with 2 balconies. I have my own balcony, my own bathroom, walk in closet and the living room is spacious.

For those of you who are moved out, do you remember your first time? Where was it? What was it like? Roomates?

i'm going through so many changes this '08 and this is definitely a big step for me, just sharing in the excitment. :D

Moved into my first house in 1999.

North Carolina
Military Base Housing
2 Bedrooms
1 Bath
Small Yard

My wife and I didn't realize we would get a house right away, so we hadn't packed up our stuff from storage. We spent the first couple of days on a foam mattress on the floor, with a single lamp and an alarm clock in the room. That first weekend, I took leave and drove back to Pennsylvania to get our stuff.

I'm preparing to move into my 8th house sometime early next year.
Moving always sucks, in my opinion.

moved out to long beach right after high school. It was crazy times i left my home in oceanside on bad terms and had to do it all on my own. Attended CSUDH lots of fun lots of struggle. First time i ate out at a restaurant it made me appreciate so much and finally being able to buy furniture. Good times.

Dang.

How much do you pay over there?

The only thing I really am concerned about is food. I find it so hard to NOT eat out all the time. With the woman and I having regular jobs, the last thing we want to do is come home to make dinner.
I'm sure we'll get used to it sooner than later though.

cost of living is up. Rent was 1k for a 1 bedroom. I was going to school full time and working whenever i could.

Cooking is hard unless you know how to grocery shop for your meals as in knowing exactly what to buy to cook thru the week if your making meals from scratch.

When i had roomates bail on my 2nd apartment and doin 24 units i actually became homeless until my homegirl at UCLA found out and housed me for a month till i was back up. These times are great for experiences and really appreciating things and people and not taking anything for granted. If youre struggling, 5 bucks to eat or to get home really shows what money is worth.

Just remember to really think about all your actions because when your on your own you really lose that big safety net.

my rent total for the place is 875 monthly and it's not a bad looking place at all. central to everything too.

i buy all my food at trader joes. their food is fast and easy to make and healthy. speaking of which you ever buy food at fresh and easy?

haha love the name of that place...:keke:

Yeah we shop at Trader Joe's pretty often. Just last night we went actually.

I have heard of fresh and easy. My dad told me about it.

I moved out 2004 to santa ana and plan on staying here for a very long time. Parents retired then and moved back to the philippines and bought me a Condo. so all i gotta pay is the rest of the bills.

if anyone is looking for a room for rent near Costa mesa and irvine, hit me up!

All the homeless people hang outside Fresh & Easy because it's all the "eco-conscious" soccer moms going in and out all day.

I didn't even know Fallbrook had homeless people until they put up F&E.

Wow! That's super cheap! A decent 1 bedroom in Seattle starts at around $750. I actually have to move out of the place I'm in right now by the end of the month and I have no fucking clue where I'm going. lol. For now, I'm really leaning towards finding a room for rent on craigslist near campus.

The place I first moved into, we never had living room furniture. lol. Everyone brought what they had and nobody had enough to buy anything for the house. You get used to eating dinner and watching TV on the floor after a couple of months:bigok:

I'm in a 4 bedroom house in a nice neighbor hood,~4 miles from the center of downtown, garage/shop for 1200 a month, which is ridiculous cheap with 3 other room mates. 2 of which are car enthusiasts, and one which is a girl, so that means her car always runs and has the best air conditioning :(

But then again, this is NC, where everything is cheap

I moved out and in with my bro when i was 19. It was a one-bedroom and I slept on a futon not bad though we were only living there for like 3-weeks and off we went and moved into a 3-bedroom apt with 2 female roomates (sisters, by the way) in Reseda we all started dated and have been together ever since.

I'm sure you'll have a blast. It's one memory you wont forget. You'll always have this to say.. "Well the first time I moved out.."

Good Luck & Have tons of fun.

learn to cook and you can go to a regular supermarket, it's fucking rad. trader joes has some good shit though.

first time out was a dorm room, man that place got destroyed.
second time out was 2006, got an apartment. and man, that place got DESTROYED. lots of fun times, but i vowed never to move into another apartment. 2007 i moved back in with my parents, not for lack of cash but for lack of a place to live. got comfortable. now it's august 2008 and i'm working on buying a house with a good friend of mine. it's a foreclosure, it's taking forever. it's been literally months since we initially submitted our offer to the bank. but if we see it through we should be living there by september, and barely paying anything, living off the backs of our roommates. we're going to turn a 2 bed 1 bath into a 4 bed 2 bath. it has a tuck under one car garage, but since the garage is just the basement, you can pull two cars in. one project, one driver. we're building a 2 car carport in the back, and there will still be paved parking for another 2 cars. should hold all of our cars. i've already priced out a nice sized deck, as well. and, like my father before me, we will work hurriedly and not get permits. rock on!

All depends on who you live with. If it's you're homey, it will be fun and all good. Stranger, answered an ad, it will be akward for the most part, just strangers in the night. Just make sure you're finances are seperate. I moved into school housing here 4 years ago. Me and one of the roomates, were like, "okay we all buy our own food, our own towels, etc. ",the other two, who had never done lived away from home before were like" nah, lets just SHARE everything". Those two had it the worst and were always the source of fights. One was a mega mooch. Watch out for those type, they are the worst, they are very buddy, buddy. "I'll pay you back, don't worry about it" Will never happen. Can you tell I'm bitter? haha. You live and learn. Just pay you're part of the rent and respect eachothers space and living habits.
I lived with my friend first and he was sloppy as fuck, he liked to have one big day of cleaning, but I found it easier to just keep the house tidy and not leave shit everywhere. That really annoys the piss out of me. Actually that's how it is with my gf now, it's like living with a kid sometimes, random stuff everywhere. Man, I'm difficult, or I know what I like. psshhh
Either way know what you want and voice it, but be cool about it.
Oh yeah, have fun. Stay up late and watch all the cartoons you want and eat cookies. Or whatever you've always dreamed of,haha.

Does running away and sleeping on couches and the streets count as moving out. Cause that started at 16 in like 1992 :)

Now days I got a nice 2 BR, 2BR apartment with gated here in Hollywood.

Congrads man, your gonna love it and feel great!!

Just keep enough in the bank for an extra month ahead, and dont drive drunk. Those are kinda the only 2 things that ever screw young peeps over.

fuck. our apartment was 595/mo TOTAL, 2 bed 2 bath, in a good part of town.
this house we're buying is going to come out to about 600/mo TOTAL, and we're going to be renting out two bedrooms in it for 250 a pop, maybe 300 for one and 250 for the other... at any rate me and my buddy are going to be paying pocket change for the lease, plus quarter utilities each.... at any rate easily under a hundred each.

I do know how to cook, i was taught by my grandmother and mother growing up. (thank goodness, i will not have my future family living off fast food and microwavable fatty meals) :keke: Trader joes does have some good shit and one big reason why i really like their stuff aside from the healthy part, is that the food easy to make and saves time....especially when you're working and schooling full time. I just don't feel like making shit after a long day :o

Are you thinking about getting a roomate?

You would still be out on your OWN, but you would have someone there to live with which is a good thing.

and it takes financial stress off you!

Wait I got confused by the thread title...Is he talking about just moving or moving OUT like out of your parents house?!?! I grew up military brat style (dad wasnt military but worked for the gov) so I moved alot. I imagine we moved pretty much every 3 yrs on average. Hell, I went to 3 HS's growing up...

I moved out when I joined the AF, lived in the dorms for a good 3 yrs or so. Finally moved out moved out to a 2 bedroom apt with a roomate. Then wanted a house so got with 3 friends and got a 3 bedroom, 3 bath, 3 car garaged house with a brick floored back yard with an enclosed Jacuzzi!!! This was in Norcal (fairfield) Rent for the place was $1650 but split 4 ways (became 4 cuz one of their GF moved in and they had the master BR), AF were giving me $1250 for rent...so whatever the difference was, went to my pocket or car...

either/or i guess. my dad was in the navy so i grew up military brat style too. but it's a good thing that the moving around was done when i was really young when he retired i was roughly 12 yrs. old. that sucks you had to go to 3 differnt high schools.

yes yes, congrats on the deal of a century. and watch how long you eat at trader joes when you go to all them mexican food places and roscos waffles at 12 at night.
than you will have to run everywhere.

my first time I moved out, I roomed with this crazy guy in costa mesa, at this town home appartment place by south coast plaza. place was nice, but I was there for a week before I had to move out, cause I almost died. place was full of drama, cause my roomate mad e a habit of sleeping with woman who were married to local gang members and just crazy ass people.
we had the top floor with vaulted ceilings and balconies, but I thought at one point it was climb down the balcony when I am on the 8th floor, or take a bullet.
crazy times.
I hope your first time moving out is not that crazy.

i kinda sorta eased into it.

i moved into a dorm for college, which was 2.5 hours away from my parents' house, so i only went back to the house for holidays, then moved back for the summer.

then my second year, my best friend transferred to that college and we got an apartment across the street from campus. same drill as before, except i still lived there in summer since i had a summer class.

i moved back home the summer after my third year, then moved to california that fall, and only went back to visit once a year for a few years.

in california i lived in student apartments for a bit, then moved in with my gf and her roommates in an apartment off campus

then we both moved into a house and got married.

the end.

i think moving far away from your parents helps a lot. they are less likely/more unable to help you out so you either do what you need to do or die :)
