View Full Version : Waterpump belt snapped, help?

I was driving normally earlier last night, I smelled something that smelled like melting, and I felt my powersteering go out and checked my temp a few secs later and the car was overheating. I pulled over to check it out, and my belt was gone. To my knowledge, the belt was still in good condition, but I did notice something wierd.
On the water pump pulley, there was melted chunks of the belt on the pulley (built up in one area). Any ideas as to what may have caused this? I was JUST about to change the clutch fan because it was trying to run at the engine rpm. Could it be that the bearings in the clutch fan seized? Or perhaps the water pump itself? Also, when I try to spin the fan, it feels harder to spin, and gets stuck after a few turns.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Sounds like you need a new pump. I say this because the fan clutch going out won't cause the belt to seize up. The fan just responds to the pump pulley/bracket rotation. That's your problem.

Change the water pump and do your thermostat while you're at it. If you want, you can grab my still in good condition thermo.

You need to move back :(
Oh yeah, one question, to change the waterpump/get the fan out etc.. do you HAVE to take the top shroud off? Or can you work around it?

Doesn't the stock KA fan not perform as well w.o a shroud or something like that?
If it's all the same, hell i'll take it off. I'll probably just go electric fans when I get a new radiator anyways, which will be soon, as my current one is leaking.

Why do you need to ask us? Just replace the pump and belt.

And i'll be busy trying to get my car running so I can actually get to work tomorrow instead of bumming a ride. What's your spare car lineup mel? Lemme buy a DD off you rofl.
Apperantly kevin's car got fked up today too, somebody bashed his windows in, but that's a little OT.
I'll be back in this thread if the car has any more problems after I change the water pump and what not later.

the thermostat can be replaced without removing anything so there is no compelling reason to replace thermostat. you just lose a bit of coolant. park car on hill and run engine with rad cap off to get air out. it is very hard to get air out on this car.
