View Full Version : Sunday = splurge day. What to eat?

g6civcx

I train and diet pretty hard. 2 hours a day at least in the gym 6 days a week.

Sunday is my splurge day and I want recommendations on good food to eat. I am very open and I'll eat anything that doesn't make me sick.

For those who don't know, there is a training technique that kicks your ass for 6 days and lets you eat whatever the hell you want on the 7th day. This technique recognises that abstinence only makes you crave bad food more. So they allow you to eat whatever and as much as you want on the 7th day if you can stick to your training and diet for the rest of the week.

Let's not make this thread about training. I'm just looking for what tasty food to eat to reward myself for the hard work during the week.

Keep in mind that I'm pretty limited to stuff that's available on the EC, but if you recommend something good I'll search it out. We have a very diverse population here and I'm sure they can point me somewhere.

go get the biggest, best pizza in town, a pound of your favorite candy, and 2 2-liters or a case of your favorite soda,

then watch as many movies as it takes to get through the whole pizza and the candy and soda all at once.

warning: when using this splurge method, toilet paper may not be good enough. you might need to take a shower after you take a shit.

To be honest, I don't like pizza that much. To me, pizza amounts to an uncreative way to get rid of leftovers by using them as toppings. Plus I don't like carb. If anything, I'll get a thin crust at most.

Candy and soda? Got anything else more creative? :)

i just had some french toast and cheese eggs and bacon and a frosty mug of milk. and i didnt even have to work out for 12 hours to get it. i win.

Um, I eat that stuff every day. I wouldn't consider that "reward" food.

The point of this thread is to recommend me good food to eat :)

Let me rephrease the question. What is some good exotic food to eat? Keep in mind that what's considered exotic for plain Americans may just be mundane for me.

I got the splurging idea from that book. As for the rest of the program, I'm a certified trainer and have been training for years so I make up my own program.

I eat this stuff every day so it's not quite that rewarding. I don't really like most dim sum dishes because they tend to be greasy and not taste good, although some dishes can be good.

I eat krn bbq like every other day so that's not exotic, at least not to me.

I knew a chick who ate condensed milk out of the can with a spoon. The big cans.

I did that. No point retaining water if you don't have to. But I use my fingers instead of spoons :)

Let me rephrase again. I want Fear Factor food that doesn't make me sick.

prime rib and/or roast duck! Seriously, i don't know your taste or whats avail out in Virginia so i really don't know what to recommend. I would think that up your neck of the woods, the 'New England' old school continental fare would be unbeatable. East Coast (and the south) make some of the best duck.

There's a foodie website called Chowhound Boards - CHOW (http://www.chowhound.com) , which might cover your area. It's a good resource to use when finding out new places to eat. I used to use it all the time when I had more disposable income.

Personally, I've been having a lot of Persian food lately. The way the meat is cooked is very delicious, clean tasting, and low on oils/greases. We have lots of that here in socal.

Fresh sashimi/sushi

I prefer plain sashimi over sushi, but that's like a normal protein food I eat every day.

sukiyaki

It really depends on who cooks it, but I don't really like this dish in general. It's more like a texture dish instead of a flavour dish.

good bowl of ramen

Possible but would depend on how it's prepared.

tempura

Now we're talking. I think the sauce makes or breaks it for me.

vietnamese food (pho, fresh spring roll, sandwich)

Fu*k that. I eat that sh*z every day :)

good french food at a bistro

I would really like to try some fancy frenchy deal but I'm always a little intimidated over what to order.

thai fried fish with that curry sauce over it

I like it where the tail and fins are intact = extra crunchy. Also depends on the sauce as well.

chow fun

I know this place that makes a variation of chow fun where the noodle pan fried and is really crispy and not limpy like they always make it.

peking duck

I eat it without the pancake. Is that weird?

good american bbq
good Italian food (pasta, ravioli, anything really)

I may have to agree with you there.

singapore chili crab

This is interesting. I will seek out for it. Any description on what it is?

what about japanese food?

go to a sushi bar and blow a lot of money.

oh, drink japanese beer while you're there.

That's normal. nothing new there :)

can you help me gain weight?

Sorry I'm not a nutritionist.

Duck, as in Americans know how to prepare duck? We're considered the South so too far for New England stuff.

Can you elaborate more on this duck?

I've been scouring yelp and other local boards since they tend to have better recommendations, but I will check it out. Thanks.

I agree. I like more subtle flavours as opposed to heavy flavours.

Bistro is actually fairly informal french fare, and arguably the least pretentious. It's not exotic at all, but the cooking uses a lot of butter typically. Steak with black pepper sauce (or mussels with light cream sauce) and string fries is usually what I order.

Protein shakes. Go to Smoothie King. They have awesome protein smoothies. Or you can go to GNC and get a tub of their protein powder, mix it with some water. That tastes pretty bad though, but it does work for packin on weight especially if you're trying to build muscle.

When I worked out and played basketball all the time I couldn't eat enough.

It pissed people off royally.

I was eating 5-6 GOOD size meals a day, everyday, and people commented on my thinness daily.

After work they watched tv, after work I was active. See the difference.

Meal in itself a "splurge" but a good one none the less

Realize that Americans eat a very restrictive diet because they are wasteful and don't eat every part of the animal. What's exotic for the average American isn't so for everyone else.

When we slaughter a pig, we eat every part of the pig, including the brain, snout, organs, feet, tail, eyeball, every freaking thing.

When Americans eat meat, they just want a generic looking slab of meat, as if the rest of the animal doesn't exist.

are you sure you didn't make this thread so people know you're working out?

Check the MMA thread. Everybody knows I'm a CPT and have been training for years. It's no secret.

Personally I really enjoy the multi-course dinners served with wine tasting. it doesn't necessarily have to be french. even the Japanese have their omakase. Often, in addition to the multi-course meal itself, every course has a wine the chef would recommend going with it. Some of my favorites are seared foe gras, sweetbreads, sea urchin and duck (or goose, if thats avail). Even then it's more about the preparation vs. what is being served. Now is actually a good time to try out that sorta thing, as it's truffle season, if you like truffles.

This is a place I would like to try out in the East Coast, but its in New York
per se (restaurant) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Per_se_%28restaurant%29) . I very rarely visit the east coast, so I don't know too much in terms of what options there are out there. I think Guy Savoy might also have a place or two in nyc that might be worthwhile.

Chilli crab - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chilli_crab)

By far one of my most favorite foods. Had this when I was in Singapore a few years ago at a open air restraunt by the ocean. A few crabs, fried mantou (chinese fried bread), and some beer and you are set.

Must visit Singapore some day. that aside, those fried buns are so damn greasy you can taste the fat. :D so much better than their steamed counterparts. Need to try that with some chilli crab sometime.

Pls kindly make some recommendations in norcal. We have that dish in socal too, but nobody here I know of makes it quite right.

There is suppose to be a few Chinese restaurants in the bay area that suppose to have chili crab. Id try clement street, china town, or a more upscale chinese restaraunt in San Francisco because I do not think there is any singapore restaurant in norcal.

Only place I had it was in Singapore and Tokyo. You really have to go to Singapore or Tokyo to get it. The Singapore government opened a Singapore restaurant in Tokyo to spread Singapore cuisine and that was just as good as chili crab in Singapore.

Also those friend mantou is like a drug. You dip the mantou in the chili crab sauce = awesome
