View Full Version : Click sound after braking? Front brake swap or TC rod install?

Everytime I drive and come to a complete stop I hear a fairly loud click coming from the front of the car. Sounds like it could be the brakes.
I've recently upgraded to q45 brakes up front. Before that I installed TC rods as well but I dont think i noticed the click.
I only hear it when I come to the end of a full stop. Braking seems fine.
The only thing I didn't do when it came to the install was adding the shims on the pads but I figure that's only for squeals.
Any ideas? It kinda sounds more like someone cracking their knuckles.

double check all your bolts. make sure everything is on tight

pull the t/c rod loose and check the heim itself for play

double check all of your suspension hardware, even if you didn't touch it during installation. I once had a clunking noise while making sharp turns. I couldn't find anything loose, but I decided to go over all the hardware and make sure everything was tight. I didn't find any loose hardware, but the clunking went away after I did it.

i know this sounds stupid but check your lug nuts as well, 240's are known to have them back off on occasion, trust me i know, even when impacted on. and that will cause it to make that sound after braking

so it seems like something is loose? That seems to be the consensus here.
I also took my car into a mechanic 3 weeks ago and he also said my calipers might have a bit of leakage. Could that be a culprit? Faulty caliper pistons? I dont have shims on the pads either?

Could also be your steering rack giving up. Releasing load clicks are most likely tension rods, but could be steering rack bushings.

if your brake pad has play in the caliper, the pad itself will move forwards/backwards and make noise. this can happen if you dont have the small shims in place, or if the pads are crappy, or the calipers are worn.

I have a similar sound comming after I did my z32 brake swap. I'm starting to think that it might be the rotors I have. There is a little play that produces a click/tap sound that is only produced when I depress the brake pedal after driving a bit. If I am comming to a stop I will notice the click. When the stop is completed, the noise won't happen again.
I'm a bit new to 240 tech but all the other cars i've had never had play with the rotor even with the wheel off. To my surprise the ones I got from heavythrottle do on the 240.
Have you checked to see if there is slop on the rotor? Try taking the wheel off and grab a side of the rotor and see if it wiggles. That might be the problem.

I had a loud click/clunk sound when I would brake coming onto a complete stop. My cure was re-tightening every bolt that's suspension-related.
You may want to check all your bushings, shot bushings may equal metal-metal contact for some parts.

I'm having the same issue with my Z32 30mm swap on my s14. I only did the fronts, and its been about 2 years now. When I come to a stop I can hear a click/pop noise...and when its resting at a light, if i press the pedal in a little more it makes the pop (binding) noise again. I've bled them per FSM and I have the shims to hold the pad in place.
I don't have an answer for the noise, but I think I'm going to rebuild the caliper and get new pads to see if I can fix my problem.

okay so i'm sort of relieved I"m not the only one. Did anyone have brake problems related to this sound?
I'm going to cross off tc rod off the list. I never noticed the sound when i installed it but I'll retighten everything when I can.
As far as the steering rack is concerned, I replaced that when i went to the mechanics a couple of weeks back. The sound was there before and after i replaced the rack.

Nope, no problems related to the noise. My brakes stop just fine, but the noise is just annoying. I forgot to mention that my car's an auto...so my car is always under load when its in drive. I can be at a stop and it will stop well everytime, but if i play with the pedal while stopped i get this popping/clicking noise.
To the OP, what upgrades do you have as far as the braking system? SS lines? BMC? Auto or manual?

for you guys w/ the issue - have you tried doing this when your car is already stopped (and say in neutral)? when car is off?
If it happens when the car is off as well, you can always jack the car up and have someone press the brake.

I have the same noise when upgrading to z32 calipers set up front. I then upgraded to 350z rotor and the noise when away. Then after 1000+ miles the noise slowly came back, but not as loud. I think it something to do with the rotor wearing down. It doesnt really bother me and my car is fine.

does it click while braking or when you let off the brake pedal?

it clicks while depressing the pedal right before full stop.
My upgrades are q45 calipers with some rotors from 88rotors and some pads they sent me from pbr.. Everything is stock s14. manual.
I guess as long as it isn't dangerous then i guess i'll live with it. Maybe i'll youtube it one day.
