On a S13 SOHC motor what happens when it overheats and sat for a year, and now wont start.....any ideas what would have to be replaced? I dont have the car, but would like to know so I can think about fixing it.....I'm thinking cylinder head? Any thoughts are appreciated.
something probably got warped if it just sat there..... but i have NO CLUE im talking out of my butt (_)_) <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>

I know that there is no coolant in the oil. And Supposedly gas is getting to the engine.....the distributor and wires have all been replaced. It sounds like it wants to start, but it just wont. Can the valve timing be off? Does the cap on the distributor control ignition timing?

isn't our timing electronically controlled??? this may be a dumb question...but you said you replaced the wires and distro cap...what about plugs??? also check the fuel injectors...they may be clogged...

How bad did you overheat it? Overheating usually means you've fucked the rings, possibly bent the camshaft. Warped the head. All sorts of crazy shit could have happened. As far as sitting for a year, why the ####'d you do that? I'd take all the spark plugs out and crank the engine. Actually, first drain the gas tank. Year old gasoline jellies something fierce. You pistons are probably full of that crappy sludge. Gonna have to clean it before you start it. By the way, watch out when you crank the engine with the spark plugs out. It'll spray a bit of gas. Maybe put a rag in the spark plug hole to catch the gasoline.

no, i'm not the one who did that......I'm looking at buying a car in that condition. It supposedly is getting gas to the engine, just wont turn over....I was thinking gas too. What do I need to get to check compression before I make a decision. Any idea on the costs for a junkyard head...dont say car-parts.com since i'd like to see it before i buy

Try jump starting the battery, after a year it might be dead and is often over looked.

If it overheated badly, the pistons may have expanded and binded up in the engine. If thats the case, its probably now worth repairin the engine, or at least it would be a big job.

well as far as a car sitting for a year, it'll need an oil change (obviously), bleed the fuel system and replace the filter (possibly lines and pump, if not it needs to be cleaned out pretty badly), rotor, cap, wires and plugs, either new battery or charged or possibly jumpstarted, im sure im forgetting plenty...
if you ask me its not worth your time. the engine is probably destroyed from overheating to the point that it'd cost you much less to buy a new DOHC engine and/or tranny ($400-800), and having sat outside for a year isnt helping anything at all. tell him the engine is irrepairable and pick it up for 1/2 as much

well seeing as I'm going to buy it for 400$ I'm not looking to bring the price down. I know the motor turns with the starter, so the pistons aren't siezed. I just want to get her running so I can use it as a winter car. The wires, etc have all been replaced. I'm thining fuel filter. I guess I'll pull the rail off and check to see if the injectors spray when cranked. Just looking for some thoughts here. So you guys are betting on a shot head if its not ignition/fuel? How hard is install on one of those

it'll be alot easier and cheaper in the long run to just find a ka24de

Well I dont want to drive my 96 240 (21K on it) in the snow, I'm trying to sell my 99 altima, and I figure for 400$ a 89 240sx isnt bad, just have to get her to start....I'm praying fuel filter....All the electical crap has supposedly been replaced...and I'm betting the simple fuel filter is causing the problem (if it sat for a year its got to be clogged, but we'll see.
