Anyone willing to bet Senator Salazar hasn't had to pay for his gasoline in years - but he's willing to make us pay more than $10/gallon.

we didn't drill in the 70's, and it was worse then. i'm not saying we shouldn't drill, but THIS ISN'T AS BAD AS YOU THINK.

how bout we drill, then use the money we would supposedly gain from the drilling for developing a non oil dependent energy market.

Neither side of the debate seems to have many facts available. Does anybody know how many barrels of oil (or gallons or liters) are estimated to be found from offshore drilling?

FWIW: ANWR may have 16 billion barrels (672 billion gallons).

presumably more than none, which would be good for me and you. we should do it, but i wish they'd go out of their way to not shit up the whole gulf the way texas' beaches are.

"The Interior Department estimates there are about 19 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 86 trillion cubic feet of natural gas beneath waters under drilling bans from New England to southern Alaska." House votes to end offshore drilling ban - Environment - MSNBC.com (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13573049/page/2/)

Not entirely sure how accurate my figures are... as I couldn't find any others.

Being optimistic that's 35 billion barrels on the OCS and in ANWR. CIA world factbook puts the U.S. at 20.73 million barrels per day. ~ 1688 days or a little over 4.5 years worth of oil.

Unfortunately, it would seem that we would have just 4.3 billion barrels at the most by 2030 as production would begin in 2018. Also, the estimated price change in crude oil will be $1.44 in 2027.

The bold portions are the deal breakers for me. Personally, I don't have a strong opinion about the drilling itself... but it will not help in the short term and will not have a great impact in the long term. Seems like we should just be doing something else.
