I'd like to learn about MMA and self defense. Does anyone know of a place to learn in or around the Van Nuys area? I know there are tons of places where you can take classes, but Im interested in the good ones. Thanks in advanced.

BTW, not looking for a specific style yet, just the basics.

your best bet is to join the forums at mmajacked.com and sherdog for information like that man. My roomate is pretty big on that stuff, in you're in van nuys bas ruttons gym is in calabassas which is a small journey for yourself but I hear it's a great gym.

My friend jsut participated in his first MMA match last week, it was dope, he trains at the gym in Monrovia, his trainer was my old trainer who taught me jiu-jitsu, he was also a referee for UFC.

If I were you I would learn one thing at a time. Start with Juijitsu or Muay Thai. Both will boost your self defense but if you are serious about it being for self defense then learning MMA isn't the best way to go.

Don't get me wrong MMA will teach you about 90% of what you need to defend yourself but street fighting is totally different.

I like to concentrate on one aspect until I feel comfortable and then move on to learn another as in starting with standup and them learning ground techniques.

Which style is best for street fighting? I dont plan on getting into a street fight, instead I'd rather be prepared. I was looking into Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Torrance. Seems like that particular style will benefit someone in an unpredictable street fight.

krav maga will prob be best for real world self defense.

but in terms of sport and for a great workout, muay thai and brazilian jiu jitsu is pretty exciting. If you're willing to travel to Pasadena, I'm a student at Sityodtong.. I checked out a few different schools before signing up, and I must say that Sityodtong is the most legit one around.

Correct their's quite a difference from MMA training and Self Defence.

One is more sport and the other is to save your life.

Both will get you in shape, but a IMO i'd go for a speific martial art to learn and sharpen your tecnique first.

Your first month or so at a MMA gym is more concentrated on just working you out, slammin on a heavy bag. More like cardio kick boxing.

Look into Krav maga like Felix said, you'd be tearing off peoples scabs w/ your teeth in no time
