Ummmmmm.........so i looked up "earthquake safety" and i got this:
What to do during an earthquake
1. If you are indoors, duck or drop down to the floor. Take cover under a sturdy desk, table or other furniture. Hold on to it and be prepared to move with it. Hold the position until the ground stops shaking and it is safe to move. Stay clear of windows, fireplaces, woodstoves, and heavy furniture or appliances that may fall over. Stay inside to avoid being injured by falling glass or building parts. If you are in a crowded area, take cover where you are. Stay calm and encourage others to do likewise.
Dude, that's like the worse thing that you can do. You are supposed to crouch NEXT to something solid. Not under it...

well, the way i see it.. if small debris falls, what's going to protect you? the desk or open air? if something big enough to smash the desk falls and you're on the side of the desk, then i'd believe that most likely one side of your triangle won't support you and you'll end up getting smashed as well
i think if you're in a situation where the ceiling collapses, you're pretty much fucked either way
but i'd still rather be under a desk. just my two cents.

What i enjoyed was watching closely to see the reactions in the office.
Our office is full of contractors from alot of countries.
Looking across the sea of cubicles, you start with the gopher affect.
The native cali folks - "oh" and they sit back down and keep a watchfull eye for debris
The contractors - "oh, OH, OH MY GOD" as they all storm for the nearest emergency exit. Alarms blaring, traffic jam in the door way, people pouring out of the building.
Luckily this was NOT anywhere violent as the Northridge earthquake, or we would have had alot of injuries from those folks stampeeding each other and losing their balance and shit.
Goes to show, that we are NEVER prepared.
Any one of us could know exactly what to do, its the guy next to ya that most likely will get you hurt. You know, the SOLID MASS standing next to you. Fucker might run for the door, or worse, DUCK - all the while you are standing there in the triangle of life:bite: tragic.

Triangle of life doesnt work unless you're dealing with significantly higher magnitudes of force. At low force, if you're sitting next to a book shelf and something from up top falls, guess where it's going? Yep, it's going to drop right on your head. Now, same model, if it was thrown from the top of the shelf, then yes, the arc could potentially nail you if you're under a nearby table. That's the whole theory behind the Triangle of life, is that it protects you from anything that falls at a 45degree angle or higher. If you're just a little bit smaller, you're done.
Desk protects you at anything that's doing anything but being thrown at you from the side (of course depending on the size of the desk.
Cliff notes: Triangle of life is dumb in anything under a 7.0 mag quake. Pay attention in Elementary school and Jr High.. AND high school. They said get your happy ass under the desk. Do what you're told and stop thinking :P

Get to the doorway now!
Mind you, I hate earthquakes. They just feel terrible to me. My kids never experienced one before. My daughter was asking if something crashed to the ground, and my son was saying it was the Hulk. (They've seen too many comic flicks lately.)
My daughter, not accepting the "sometimes the world shakes" explanation, sat with me and watched the CalTech lady explain what happened. It's sad that a 6-year-old had a better grasp of the technical explanation than some of those reporters did.
