hello,
im doing an sr20det swap on my 91 240sx
i am having a nightmare with dropping this motor in, i spent about 6 hours last night just tryin to get the motor on the mounts with no success. basiclly i hoist up the engine slide the tranny under the tunnel, clear the crank pulley from the front radiator support while sliding the motor in, line the shaft up into the tranny , continuing to push the motor in, no matter what i do, no amount of chain re adjustment or jack play helps. basically i have the rubber mounts installed on the car and im dropping the motor on them should i put the rubber mounts on the block first? the closest i can get is where the motor is in the bay, shaft all the way in the tranny but the motor mounts dont line up on the studs, at best i can get a single side 1/3 of an inch close this motor will not go in any ideas? could my driveshaft be too long its the oem driveshaft?:confused:
any ideas

Motor mounts on the block. If possible, attach the tranny outside of the car, then drop in the whole unit, and attach the driveshaft after the motor is set. Be careful if you try to pry the studs. They can break. Possibly remove your radiator/fan for more room.

Best results are to keep the full mounts on the block (at least what I've done. They should drop in the holes. Work on getting one in, readjust the chain and drop the other one in. You may have to use a jack on transmission and a 2 by 4 up on the front to help push for best results. Just trying to help.
And the oem driveshaft should bolt right up.

you can use either usdm (need dust collar) or jdm driveshaft but it needs to be for a manual i think the automatic is longer. but you shouldnt be putting them on yet until the motor/tranny is in place so thats not your problem. just wiggle and yell at it till it listens to you.

He's correct, if you using the sr dust collar, you will run into problems also.

Install Engine with Engine Mounts On the Engine!!
Notice the Slots on the K-Member they are there for your convenience to allow the engine mounts to slide in there

good ideas, i think ill put the rubber mounts on the motor first, and loosen it up, dust collar ? you mean the thing around the end of the tranny where the shaft goes in, that piece of metal ? will the sr20det tranny collar fit with the usdm manual driveshaft, also all the times i did this the tranny and motor were attached.
something that helped me put the motor back was a scissor jacks, i put the scissor jack base on the radiator bottom support and the top piece of the jack against the bottom of the motor, it really works like a charm to push that motor in,
but ill try having the rubber mounts loose on the motor,

No you have to take off the metal collar when using the USDM Drive shaft

the mounts are reversed on the ka and sr mounts. like you use the sr left on a KA right and vice versa.

Another good way is to jack the car up and down while adjusting the chain. Bring the car to the motor a little then motor to car a little and repeat.
My first one was a pain in the ass too but definately put the driveshaft in after you mount the engine.

I think I left mine the way they came from the importer...and it worked fine. THis would only apply to mounts if your puttin them on from scratch.

k, cus i got some slightly newer ones, oem style, but i pulled out the passenger side one and changed it with the newer one and i put it in the same way i pulled the old one out, as for the drivers side i left that alone cus i couldnt get it off at the time , pain in the arse but ill pull the old drivers one out and put the slightly new oem mounts on the motor

Yes you're going to want to swap your KA dust collar onto the SR transmission.
