I don't. I see retarded designs and cheap feeling cars that attract 15 year old girls into saying "awww that's cute, but it's kinda ugly."

This is a perfect way for Nissan to bring out some more niche vehicles. Which IMO is the way of the future with our shrinking car market.

im willing to see how this pans out before making a statement
I'm all for it.
Datsun is a name known for sporty and affordable.
It's a great way to go.
It has all of Nissan USA's heritage, so it can do a lot of things a new brand couldn't.
It's like if Chrysler brought back Plymouth as a entry level performance brand to sell cheaper Challengers and Chargers, with lower grade interiors but the same drivetrains.
I really see a lot of decontented sports models as a possibility in Datsun's future, since that's what Datsun was all about back in the day.

i just hope whatever they do, they decide to open that storage place with all the nissan cars to the public as a nissan museum. I wanna check it out. If they do the Datsun thing, i think this would be icing on the cake to have the storage place open

It's to bad no one makes a 20kish sporty platform any more. Honda did this with the civic integra and it was wildly successful. I don't think anyone else can match that. Sharing engines/drivetrain just isn't the same. GM tries this everyday with saturns, cobalts, etc etc. They get no where. There's a whole generation that's never seen crank windows and I don't think they will either. Crank windows and non power doorlocks are officially dead. Interiors are getting cheaper and cheaper to produce so it's not a matter of power vs not. Everything comes with power until you get in the serious cost cutting. Small cars are not profit mongers so small cheap cars arn't the mother load even though that's what people want.
Making a Datsun 510 FWD boxy little car though is only gonna piss off people. Man I remember when datsun's would have rust on the showroom floor.

In case you are not aware Nissan and Toyota/Suby are making new RWD entry level coupes that will be in the low $20k range. I expect Toyota's to be less then Nissan's. But Nissan's should still start in the $20,000 range.

the Mazdaspeed3 and Cobalt SS are in the low 20's and thier performance would make a Civic or Integra cry.

i hope they don't ruin the Datsun name like this. Datsun is synonymous with the original Z and 510, in my opinion the BEST Japanese vehicles of their time. Recreating Datsun to compete with Scion would be an extremely horrible grotesque (insert as many horrible words as possible) idea imaginable.

Besides us Nissan enthusiasts, I honestly don't think people under 20 will even recognize the Datsun name. I know most of my friends don't.
It's not a bad idea, but what "lifestyle" will it cater to? If it's gonna cater to the F&F "tuner" crowd I will vomit.

Maybe it is a smart decision for them to get a strong hold on this area of the market which will change the typical direction that the companies cars are going now, but I would rather they do it under another name. Don't bring back Datsun just for the hell of it and completely loose the roots. If they do bring back the name, this car better be following closely behind..

The Grid is someones Idea of a future retro 240Z. It will never happen and basically looks like a highly modified Z.
Now on to the subject hand. Man some of the people in this thread are just full of vitriol. Fact is a lot of People would recognize the Datsun name. Just because your 18-22 does not mean you won't know of or heard of Datsuns.
To the Florida guy talking about Datsun's rusting on the showroom floor dude you live by the saltwater with ultra humidity anything will rust. Get over it.
Datsun's were good cars but don't fool yourself they were tin cans and very much a Japanese product of its time, cheap reliable and cheap. I.E. for the most part Nissan and Toyota at that time were not building cars with the intention of them lasting more than 10 years. More like 5 years. So anything coming out from Nissan today with the Datsun name has the potential to be a much better car.
Oh and don't think Datsun did not have its share of FWD cars and shitty little econoboxs, 1200,B210,210 (RWD solid axle 1200cc engines! F10 70's 310 early 80's Both FWD! Oh and your beloved and ugly 78 200sx RWD live axle and yes it was a Silvia in Japan. So its nothing new Nissan has always had its share of stinkers and shitbox's . I.E. get over it.

First off, I hate that term "lifestyle brand."
Now if this means releasing cars that cater more to true automotive enthusiasts than any other type of people, well of course I'm all for it. Yeah I know, we're the minority but still. Will there ever be a time where we get priority treatment?
But to bring back the Datsun name for it? No. That name needs to be left alone.
Personally for me, releasing affordable cars that don't have a million airbags, rear cameras, dvd/nav, traction control, electronic stability control, and other useless features that interfere and are intrusive to the driving experience would be a dream come true. A car with the basics...is that even possible nowadays? Though there are a few new cars that I like, I can't say the rest for the majority. And even those few cars that I do like, I feel that a lot can be improved. ..weight reduction, certain options, interior/exterior design, etc. Maybe this is a sign of hope. I won't put all of my faith and trust in it yet though.
Can they pull it off? Maybe.
Can things get fucked up? Most definitely.

hmm lifestyle... drift lifestyle? i can't tell wether this is a good or bad thing. cheap econoboxes are good, but "lifestyle brand" is bad. hopefully they will keep the authentic datsun feel about it hahaha if they make an rwd coupe for under 17k i'd say it's a good thing.
but god knows we don't need a nissan-version of wookie...
