View Full Version : Battery Relocation Problems

Shit is pissing me off. Maybe my setup is completely wrong, I'm not sure. Anyways I've been having problems with my battery ever since i moved it to the back of the car.

It wont stop popping fuses. I'm using a 100amp inline fuse about a foot away from the battery. And it only pops during startup.

Now I am using 4g wire, I know your supposed to use 2g or lower but, could this really be the problem? Ive seen so many people run 4g and be fine.

Sometimes its fine, starts up just like the battery was up front. I don't know what the hell is going on. Last night I popped a 100amp, all I had left was a 40amp, so I got some friends to help me push start it using the 40 amp and it was fine. Drove all the way home with it, kinda leads me to believe i just need a bigger fuse for startup, because it was fine with a 40amp driving home.

So I'm hoping I just need a bigger fuse? Maybe 150 or 200amp, or just 2g wire?

Now if your reading this wondering, "What the hell is wrong with this dude, is he fucking retarded?" My response would be, yes, I am fucking retarded when it comes to electrical systems and i need some help. lol

Here are some pictures of my setup.

Take note, this has always been wrapped, just showing you how I have it put together.

Get a thicker guage....had a buddy with the same problem, plus other things. But bigger gauge helped

Yea i figured that might be the problem, 100amp fine though?

Try adding Engine Grounds, I know you got two in the rear but your engine and starter needs good grounds

I think he used a 60 or a 70 after the gauge was replaced, I'll buy it from darvex.com, there prices are really low and supper fast shipping......

Yeah check the gauging. I know starters always pull a ridiculous amount of amps but 100 seems a bit crazy.

I also recommend getting a circuit breaker, so it instead it just pops so you dont have to keep changing fuses.

Car Audio Video - Car Subwoofers - Car Amplifiers and Speakers (http://www.sonicelectronix.com) has them cheap. I also have one I am never gonna use from a past car audio instal that Ill sell you cheap

I think your problem is in the first pic...
I'm Not sure if thats a ground or positive.
If thats power, then it needs to be protected and covered.

whats the inlet? I just ordered the 1gauge wiring kit from summit.

my 100anl fuse kept blowing i use doble 0G wire (yeah pretty thick way to thick...) and kept blowing fuses... changed to a 150anl and havent had any problems yet... been a while since it last blowed...

Looks like you aren't properly grounded.

Looking @ the first picture, in the background between the upper/lower intake manifold, there should be a ground wire there. where is it now?

And the rear of the car, you should really consider just have one good ground instead of like 4 wires coming out of the battery going god knows where.

why is it necessary to fuse it when it's in the trunk? is it because all that length of wire becomes a fire hazard if overheadted/shorted?

i just got my setup going and i don't have a fuse on it...although i've been trying to find my old ANL fuse holder

circuit break is the way to go dude, its pops you push the button and you're good to go again....also where the wires are connected in the engine bay on that pic above is that the ground, well make sure all connections up front are right and the positive isnt close/touching anything else where it can short off

Isn't that the stock grounding location for when the battery is up front?

Its just double grounded, one ground going to the strut tower and the other going on the floor on the trunk.

You have the engine grounded as well right ? So far you have a few things to look at get the gauge right and go from there....

Its grounded at the firewall, like stock.

Maybe i need to ground it where the old ground used to be on the manifold?

I ran a 4g to firewall along with the stock in mani ground

Alright, well thanks for the help guys. I think I've got it from here.

*Ordered 1g wiring kit from summit
*Looking for a circuit breaker
*Gonna check over some grounds again

Ill update this thread if I'm having anymore problems.

the (+) is probably grounding somewhere

Ill check when I head home today, ill shoot ya a pm.

Its either 0 or 4, cant remember off the top of my head. Was gonna use it for big 3 upgrade in last car.

Alright, just send me a pm. I'll take it if the gauge is right.

Ive already checked for that, and it that was so, fuses would of popped while driving.

I am pretty sure I have a 200A fuse in my setup along with a distribution block.

Try a larger fuse but every now and then check to see how hot your cables are getting. I would also go with the other guys advice as far as grounding cause I had a bunch of problems when I first did the relocation. The grounds in the engine bay have to be solid!

A few issues I see:

1) Ground the intake manifold/head to the chassis with a matching size wire, 4ga in your case. The ground on the back of the engine is not enough. You should also add the same size ground to the alternator case, the OE 10ga will be straining to conduct a good connection.

2) 4ga is fine as it can handle a load of up to 250A, but the connection point you've done is kinda sloppy. Take the OE lead from the starter and bolt it together with the two smaller leads from the fusebox using a nut/bolt, then bolt your battery lead going to the trunk to the starter. That eliminates that block you have completely and cleans up the wiring a lot. You can even stuff your battery connection to the fusebox inside the box for a much cleaner look.

3) In the back by the battery, ground it to a bolt at least M8 in size, scrape away all paint from the area, chase it with a tap to thoroughly clean out the threads. Use the same size ground wire as power.
