p.s. NEVER BUY SNAILS FROM CHAIN STORES. EVER. always buy from a trusted LFS. that golden apple snail had fucking worms and killed like half my livestock.

It's a 90 gallon tank, I have a sand sifting star fish a few damsels to get the cycle going. I have a bastard coral banded shrimp that killed my beautiful fire shrimp after he molted. there is about 60lbs of live rock and 40 lbs of live sand. waiting to add corals once I get the bastard shrimp out of the tank and add some more fish as well.

I haven't had good luck at all with sea stars. We have a 46 bowfront tank
1 false percula clown
1 longnose hawkfish
1 spotted cardinal fish
1 bubbletip anemone
1 coral banded shrimp
1 flaming scallop
1 hermit crab hiding somewhere
1 black longspine sea urchin
No good pics until I get this hair algae problem resolved, probably going to add a green sea hare in a month or so after I add some more filtration and some powerheads.

Well it's not much harder than maintaining a freshwater tank... But that's generally for smaller-sized tanks.
Since you're trying to keep a large shark (and you can only keep one in a tank with virtually nothing except sand and rock) you'll probably need to keep a skimmer and sump...
But since you're not keeping corals or anything, you won't need to worry so much about adequate lighting and chemical levels. You'll mainly have to focus on the salinity of your water, and temperature.
Regardless though, leopard sharks should not be kept in tanks smaller than 500 gallons, otherwise they will probably die... They can grow up to 9 feet long, and generally cannot live in a home aquarium...

30" wild caught (seriously, I found her in my bushes when I lived in Arizona) Ball Python named Eden. Bad cell phone pic, but you can kinda see her poking her head out of the left log.

Back on-topic, I've had a lot of aquariums in my life...always had a fascination with Oscars, there's a lot of really nice set-ups here. If I ever decide to buy a house (hate moving fish/aquariums), I think I'll venture into the world of salt water as well, you guys/gals have beautiful tanks.
What do you have invested in your set-ups? My snake is a relatively cheap endeavor, everything you see in the pic, including used tank and WalMart stand, I probably have less $300 invested...some of you probably have fish that cost more LOL.

Right now it's just two power compact bulbs. I have four more to go in there though.
I have a sump but some one stepped on my overflow and broke it :bash: I'm using a Rena Filstar X4 right now but at some point the sump is going back in.
No skimmer at the moment. I'm thinking of getting a hang on style skimmer but they cost to damn much for their poor performance.
I only have two fish at the moment but there are a crap ton of mushrooms and polyps. They're all hiding in the photo because the tank was literally just setup.

I got a killer set up for FREE! So my uncle got a GOLD Arowana for his birthday, well, it lived for a month and he sucks at keeping fishes, and so it died. His apartment was very small and he just gave me this set up.
80 Gallon rounded corner glass tank
* 2 Fluval 404's
* Fluorescent T8 x2, and T5 x 2 (Actinic blue) (4 lights in all, very bright)
* Stand and a 300 watt heater
* 11 watt UV Sterilizer, which I don't use much, but it's great to make water clear!!
**I once had gravel but it gets dirty and filthy when keeping larger fishes, so to make cleaning easier, i removed pretty much everything. The fish is a show piece. I paid $220 bucks for him "Lucky" is his name, when he was a juvenile 2.5". Now he's larger than a pancake at Ihop with nice big forehead.
He's a ZZ Red Dragon Flowerhorn, very smart and active. When I feed him, I rub his forehead, it's cool!!!
I change his water about once a week, sometimes once every 1.5 weeks. Use a little Amquel or more recently PRIME and a little salt which makes him super happy.
I feed him Super Red premium food, which is about $35 bucks a bean can sized package. Will buy SUMO food which is about $28 bucks. Same thing. He's very healthy and the colors, head, and pattern is amazing.
Older picture:
http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/pp4/5x114/Image019.jpg
Newer, no gravel.

just filled it about a third of the way, going to walmart for polyfill and carbon. some of the plants still have some green, they may come back... either way the fish store i bought everything from last time, and every time, is going out of business, so i bet i get some good deals on fish for this thing. gotta get it cycling...
i won't be buying that bullshit on the left of the tank again, it looks like shit imo. not sure about fish this time. i want some discus but i don't know what else. thinking about getting a bunch of neons to cycle the tank, maybe move them into my 10g later.

Not to go off topic, but how much time and cash to maintain a saltwater tank. I have been looking into it and gets pretty damn expensive. I would want some coral, 3 clownfish and rest just start with live rock.
Right now im just with tropicals. Next i was think just stepping into brackish.

I haven't done freshwater since I was a kid. Been saltwater since I started as an adult.
My friend did get a brackish tank to keep an eel. Found out it wasn't really a brackish eel. Born in brackish and then moves to saltwater. There isn't much that is really brackish. Most is brackish juveniles and saltwater as adults. They catch them in brackish then sell them as such.
He has noted that the initial investment is much greater. The monthly up keep is a lot less. It's all about taking time and doing it right. It can take months to get a tank set up but, only minutes to screw it all up. Get all the right equipment and set up and it almost maintains itself.

IMO the biggest extra expense going to salt is the salt mix, I get my water free from Scripps Pier.
I think you'll be wanting a lot more water flowing than a similar size freshwater, in just my little 3 gallon I have a filter doing about 200 gph and a powerhead at 240 gph (run intermittently)
Also on a larger tank you'll want to run a protein skimmer to be pulling waste out before it has to be processed.
Getting into corals starts to get more $. Mainly the lights, and you need to watch water parameters a lot more closely. (calcium, magnesium and alkalinity are the big ones)
A couple clowns wouldn't be a very big step up from freshwater. Add some good lighting, and TIME and you'll have an anemone with them for not much more.

i'd like to do one of those all-in-one tanks, something small for the "bonus room" i'm finishing up on my house... Red Sea Max, Bio Cube, blah blah, like a ~30g cube reef tank. i've never done one either, i figure that'd be an alright place to start. the plants/etc you can get for saltwater tanks are so cool.

I've got a 63 gallon reef tank with an ehiem classic canister filter, aquatic life dual t5 light fixture, aquatic life actinic LED strip, and a powerhead.
Fish include:
Occelaris clown
Black misbar occelaris clown
Lawnmower blenny
Yellow tale damsel
Yellow watchman goby paired with a pistol shrimp.
6 line wrasse
I have a baby sailfin tang going in later today when I get off work
Also have a cleaner shrimp, fire shrimp, and various crabs and snails.
My yellow watchman goby was the only one to stay still long enough for me to get a pic. I'll try and get some of the other fish when I get home.

Get chemiclean red slime remover. It's 27.99 or so for 900 gallons worth of dosings at my work. Most fish stores should have it. If not, check out my store's website www.aquariumconnection.com we should have it and be able to ship it, if its not on there, give us a call and we should be able to from the store. 865-588-2073. My only flow is my return pump. I don't like powerheads, anemones & PH's don't work well together. They also cause sand storms once in a while when they fall. I've been thinking about going with a slightly stronger flow return pump lately. The vortech's are nice, but out of my price range at the moment. Currently using a Rio HF17.

It's a flow issue. You have a dead spot and that's why it's growing there. It will just come back.

Well, technically, I haven't tested my water so it could be high nitrates & phosphates including low flow in that area. I guess my Spectraspure rodi unit isn't do its job of getting rid of phosphates too well.
My mangroves & chaeto seems to be doing really well even though there's no lighting on them at all for weeks now. Guessing high nitrates due to my high volume feeding. Believe it or not though, red slime didn't start developing until I started using a protein skimmer. Coincidence? Hmmm...

Could also be an old bulb issue depending on how long its been since you've replaced it/them. Looks like it could be a metal halide?

Other than that, anyone has interceptor pills? I need like 2 tablets to get rid of red bugs. I think I'd rather have these than flat worms which I have also had.
