I just picked up a *RARE* 95 Civic VX hatchback lean burn vehicle *WITH AC* for dirt cheap!
Estimated 39mpg city/ 50mpg hwy.
I tested this estimated 50mpg hwy and got a whoppin' 53mpg!!!!
*this is w/o a tune up and not checking tire pressure* I just drove it right after I bought it.
I went 60miles on 1.136 gallons!!
Im going to tune it up, check tire pressure and do it again. Google search says that some VX owners can get up to 70+ mpg.
Clean title. 144k miles!
This is definitely a keeper!
Im officially done with cars.
The 95 240SX SE, 2000 G20T and finally a Civic VX...:teeth:

nice looking car! seems really clean inside-out.
your honda kicks mine's ass. my crx si (2,200-ish lbs, 100 or so hp, but shorter gearing) gets me 33mpg with hard driving.
I am the absolute worst driver when it comes to getting mpg. I actually got 25mpg on my mom's civic hybrid (advertised 40/44ish).
but seriously, it is much wiser to invest in an older, solid honda than a new hybrid. functionally, it accomplishes pretty much the same.

if you change the wheels and lower it, will that make the mpg worse? figure maybe more rolling resistance?
I guess that looks alot better then the geo metros i was thinking about a few months ago.. tho metros are less then 1k

if you lower it, it decreases frontal area and decreases drag.
lighter wheels might help, as long as they aren't super open architecture which will decrease drag.
Skinnier wheels will help tho.

more like the miles u traveled....
cuz if ur lookin at odo...u gonna get a pretty tiny tiny number for MPG

I am asking the OP not you.
if he just drive 60 miles from full and fill up, there is a huge room of error in his mpg calculation. i think the OP should drive more miles and fill up more times, than take the average. ideally he should use same pump as well.

I devided the total distance travelled by fuel used.
This was 60 miles round trip, driving at about 65mph on the hwy with some city driving. Id say about 50 miles of it was hwy and 10miles was city stop and go. This is my normal commute in the evening. Youre right about taking an average due to traffic (construction and unexpected driving conditions).
I used hwy 680 South and 680 North from Vacaville to Benicia and back to Vacaville, trying to keep the road flat as my research regarding the Civic VX says that going up a hill (Hwy 80 near marine world) would take the vehicle out of "lean burn" mode and get about 30mpg.
However..
On the same exact route, same time, same gas station, my other vehicle's are as follows:
1999 Infiniti QX4 - 16mpg
2000 Infiniti G20T- 30mpg
1995 Nissan 240SX - 27mpg
1994 Nissan Truck - 19mpg
1992 Mighty Max - 27mpg

Yep, it's not hard to squeeze mpg's out of hybrids. It's all about feathering the throttle. I took my gf's escape hybrid around for a couple errands around town and only kicked in gas mode once or twice, which yielded me 85 mpg.
I can't find a VX for the life of me. And are these only available in red? Those are the only VX's I see.

its a lot more appropriate for highly congested cities with limited parking space (esp in europe or asia). here in socal, I don't think it makes a whole lotta sense.

that's quite impressive. I get the impression that driving technique makes a bigger difference on a hybrid than a conventional car.
The lack of power on a hybrid makes it even more challenging to go light on the pedal. I pretty much have to go wot just to get anywhere on my family's hybrid, esp on the freeway on-ramps.

I think some of it has to do with the D15Z1 engine specific to the VX trim. there was the E-vtec implemented for the sake of enhancing fuel efficiency.
Here's a simple explanation taken from Wiki. Not the best source I know, but pls bear with me;
Honda's next version of VTEC, VTEC-E, was used in a slightly different way; instead of optimising performance at high RPM, it was used to increase efficiency at low RPM. At low RPM, one of the two intake valves is only allowed to open a very small amount, increasing the fuel/air atomization in the cylinder and thus allowing a leaner mixture to be used. As the engine's speed increases, both valves are needed to supply sufficient mixture. A sliding pin, which is pressured by oil, as in the regular VTEC, is used to connect both valves together and allows the full opening of the second valve.
Specs;
D15Z1
* VTEC-E
* Found in:
o 1992-1995 Honda Civic VX
o 1992-1995 Honda Civic VEi (European Market)
+ Displacement : 1493 cm³
+ Bore and Stroke : 75 mm X 84.5 mm

sure, the EG civic in 'CX' trim should be great. its the more bare bones model, and has even less power than the vx. makes 70 hp. they are a bit rare though.
all EF civics, including the CRX should be good. The Si trim probably gets the worst mileage, as the gearing is a lot shorter. You do have to honestly ask yourself though, how much are you willing to sacrifice for mpg? Most gas misers are typically underpowered to begin with, and arn't that fun to drive stock. The MPG heroes here might easy muster over 100mpg on a crx hf!!!
