View Full Version : Coolant Pouring Into Oil Pan (Not H/G)

Alright So I bought a 93 S13 for the wife to teach her how to work on cars and being her DD.
Its equipped with a DOHC KA (for now)
A litle back ground:
my buddy had bought it to build as a track car
it came with two KA engines made one "good" engine and dropped it in.
He machined the head installed a Felpro H/G with ARP H/S and tourqed to Spec.
Problem:
Well I wired everything up and installed all accessoies filled the radiator up with coolant
So I jacked up the chassis to install the Tranny and noticed a coolant leak comming from the oil drain plug, I pull the plug and a 1/2 gallon of coolant came pouring out. :bash:
The engine has never been cranked so Im guessing there is a gasket or an O-Ring thats missing or maybe bad in the front cover or somthing cracked causing it to leak through
If I pour more water into the Rad. it steadily pours right out through the oil drain.
I also check the cylinders no traces of water that I could see.
Im not a noob to engines just KA's
I've never worked on a KA before only SR's and RB's
I didnt help him with putting the engine together so I dont completely know what all was done and this was his first time rebuilding a KA.
I didnt expect to have to do anything to the engine so I really dont feel like just tearing into the engine since I dont know really anything about the KA.
So if anyone knows what it could be so im not shooting in the dark that'd be awsome.
Thanks Peeps

My bet is a failed attempt at installing the timing cover is how you got your coolant into the oil.

Nah I dont think thats the case. I compared my KA with my buddies and my hoses were routed the same as his
But damn you'd have to be a pretty big tard to hook a coolant line to the Vlave cover.

So after reading through the KA's FSM and UNISA JECS comment, im guessing its safe to say the problem area is the front timing cover.
More than likely its that Rectangular port that seals to the block?
Thats should be the only spot where the coolant could leak that quickly into the oil desho?
I just wanna make sure before tearing it apart

Thats the only place this can happen on the front cover so its a good chance thats it, time to tear it apart.

in the center of the pic, that rag in that hole is where the coolant circulates,it must be sealed tight, there isnt a gasket fot it, just put an ass load of rtv there, if not, the coolant will drop straight down into the oil pan, and out the plug. ps: to get to that there is a lot of work, you have to remove the oil pan to get the bottom front cover off. have fun!!!

Sooo After 7 months I finally felt like ripping apart the KA. So i could change it up a bit and have another car to drive around. (and remind me of how fast my Sileighty is hahaha)
I dont have a house or a garage so with the engine still in the car i went at tearing the front cover off.

I checked the pan again and yeahhhhh

Keep it commin
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i235/Neil_85/Miyukis%20S13/PIC-0407.jpg
Probably the one cool thing about the KA, being able to pull off the cam cover
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i235/Neil_85/Miyukis%20S13/PIC-0409.jpg
This was a pain in the ass to pull the oil pump/cover
(Notice anything wrong?)

Looks pretty nasty i guess that could be the problem.....

wait a minute.. why is this part shiny??
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i235/Neil_85/Miyukis%20S13/PIC-0416.jpg
that explaines it...
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i235/Neil_85/Miyukis%20S13/PIC-0417.jpg
anndddd.... the culprit
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i235/Neil_85/Miyukis%20S13/PIC-0418.jpg
Sigh.....
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i235/Neil_85/Miyukis%20S13/PIC-0414.jpg
Ok well sorry for the picture book
Now i got a question....
I dont know the guy who owned this engine before me So i dont know how long this engine was driven with coolant in the oil.
So how fucked up could this engine be?
The guy that put it together said when he took the block and head to get milled he asked the machine shop to check the block.
he said the machine shop said the block was good. although i dont know what all they checked even if the did anything.
So I plan on JB welding the cover and save a whopping $300 for that damn pump
and replaing the broken guide
So you think the Bearings would be fine, I really dont care if the engine lasts its just gonna be a DD until I can drop in the RB25.
Thanks for the Help:bow:

this guy was selling the ka24de front cover for 20 bucks. dont know if it is sold.
so you have a hole in the timing cover where the chain rubbed?
did you get the front cover off without removing the oil pan? it kind of looks like it from the picture. but i will commend you for doing it without garage.

alright guys i got the front cover installed and transmission install and everything bolted up AGAIN
This was a little challanging bolting up the Oil strainer with out dropping them inside he pan.
But the most challangeing was scrapping the old RTV off the pan and Re-RTVing the Pan with this much space.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i235/Neil_85/Miyukis%20S13/PIC-0431.jpg
Not sure if many of you ever tried putting a tranmission in a car BY YOURSELF in a parking lot with only the front jacked up but Damn that shit was a PITA
I had to use three jacks to hold it in place hahaha
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i235/Neil_85/Miyukis%20S13/PIC-0432.jpg
The take one to angle the engine down
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i235/Neil_85/Miyukis%20S13/PIC-0434.jpg
so after 2 1/2 hour i finally got it lined up
So now heres another question
i did not do the timing on this engine
According to JWT Cam install it appears its look like it was a tooth off on the Intake Cam, i wanna verify with some one else.
Engine runs but rough like it has 270* Cams and has lifter Tap like a Mo-Fo lol
