Hey all. I'm from Ireland. I've a nice uk spec 1999 s14 touring with sr20det. The touring is the equilivant of your LE however without cruise control and with a SR instead of a KA.

I have a basic system at the moment that holds the throttle cable and deactivates with the foot brake but when I hit a hill I lose speed. Its a bit of a pain.

I was wondering has anyone taken out a full US cruise system? What's involved with it? Is it a stand alone system? I'm guessing it links to some part of the speed sensor to monitor speed which in turn runs the motor under the bonnet to adjust the throttle cable.

Can it be reto fitted to say a non SE? If so does anyone know how?

Does anyone have pics of the system/switch/ecu connection etc?? Installed or out on the ground, and what switch does what.

I've seen 2 types of switchs, one which seems to mount in the dash somewhere and one that seems to mount to the steering wheel? Which one is the right type or does it matter or do they have both switches??

Which steering wheel do the USDM cars come with is it the 3 spoke or 4 spoke? If its 4 spoke where do the controls go? If its a 3 spoke with the switch on the wheel fit a 4 spoke?

Finally depending on the answers to the above if someone has the whole system out I may be interested in buying it. But we'll get to that a little later on.

Thanks for all your help guys.

Is your s14 LHD or RHD? I dont think it should matter but the cruise controller location might be in the way of something if its RHD.

The cruise does slow the car down for some reason it fails to accelerate once you hit hills. The switch on the dash turns the system on or off, and the ones on the steering wheel sets and accelerate or decelerates the car or stops the system all together. As far as the steering wheel its a 4 spoke with the controls on the lower right side. I took mine off and rebuilt the system so I can still use it with a custom wheel

I have a base model S-14, I have all the options as an SE except the 5lug... go figure.

The switch on the dash turns the cruise control system on. The buttons mounted to the steering wheel controls it.
The control unit gets it's speed signal from the speedometer.

You will probably need to change the pulley on the throttle body to do a swap.

Mine is RHD. The only thing in the way is my alarm buzzer. Its mounted where the big piece of the cruise goes. I'm not worried about moving things to make them fit.

I was thinking I'd have to get a KA TB and either make that fit or bodge it on to the SR one. What size is the KA one???

Heres a pic of my wheel.

The GReddy RSS can be moved to the other side so I'm not bothered about that.

And heres a pic of the dash, I believe I'll have to swap the surround to a US one for the switch. I was worried that they're be different but the few pics I've seen look very similar.

95-96 US base cars are not prewired in the dash for cruise, but the plug does exist under the hood for the actuator.
97-98 US cars are fully prewired and everything plugs right in. I'm assuming since your car is RHD it's not wired at all. You will need:

brake cancel switch
clutch cancel switch
cruise control main unit
steering wheel switch
cruise main switch
actuator
vacuum pump
KA throttle body
full wiring harness
steering wheel with airbag
spiral cable
cluster trim

I removed a section of harness for a guy a few years ago who added cruise to his base model but in the end he just bought an SE dash harness and swapped the entire thing, it was easier than trying to splice it all in. Since your car is reversed a US LHD dash harness would not work without some rewiring anyway. To be honest you're better off, and cheaper, to order an aftermarket kit from Rostra, either a 250-1076 or 250-1321 with a 250-3421 control stalk. That would take under an hour to install versus a full day at least with OE parts.

ka tb will not work, you need a tb from an sr20de s14 or a g20.

the shroud around the cluster are not interchangeable between rhd and lhd cars.... tried this already by putting my rhd shroud on my lhd s14

Cheers for the info. I'm still considering it. I'm not bothered about wiring etc thats the easy part. Getting everything would be the hard part. I hadn't thought that the wheel needed to be changed. I might buy the steering switch and see how it lines up with the 4 spoke wheel.

Shroud fits fine. The switches don't line up as UK cars don't have a dimmer.

BTW are the USDM service manuals online somewhere??
