View Full Version : Air in coolant

Every now and then I smell a faint coolant smell. Usually/only when I come to a stop and take off. After a few of these my temp rises. The needle usually never goes all the way up but it runs hot.

Ive replaced:

Some random heater hoses
Thermostat
Thermistor

Ive bled the system countless times. It takes alot of heavy driving before it happens, and I can turn the heat on full blast and bring the temp down. Where are common spots for leaks? Ive checked just about everything, and I see no drips, no spots on the ground after Ive parked, I even put the car on a lift and cant find a leak anywhere.

SR20DET Blacktop
3 layer metal headgasket
Koyo Rad
50/50 coolant
Never overheated many track days in 100 plus deg days on this setup.

yea your bleeder bolt. get a new Bolt and stack up on washers. Replace the copper m6 washer every time you loosen the bolt.

you can always install an air bleeder/ breather tank
all my overheating problems went away after the install

The bleeder valve huh? Never thought to look there.

When you say stack up on washers, how many do you suggest? Is the KA bleeder bolt and washer interchangable?

Any pressure build up? Bubbles coming from the top of your rad when you let it idle. Hopefully headgasket's not on its way out.

No I mean stock up, only have 1 washer, but EVERY time you loosen the bolt you need to change the coper washer. Air will get in and out.

OK I was gonna say. Come to think of it I did see some semi fresh coolant arond the bolt but passed it off as coolant from the bleeding.

Where can I find replacement washers? Do they cross reference with anything?

Does always replacing the washer thing apply to coolant lines for the turbo too? Cause I just had to pull everything off to replace my turbo inlet gasket and I don't think I can get new washers in time for the next event...

BTW I found this site http://www.intengineering.com, that carries a bunch of copper washers, cause they are hard to find.
