View Full Version : cheap old cars (70's and such)

i'm looking for a daily driver to replace my Acura. it's a comfortable car. VERY comfortable. but it also blends in too easily. cops don't follow me around hoping for moving violations. people don't pay any attention to it. sometimes i can't find it in the parking lot. everything works all the time, there's no question that it'll start up on the first crank.
i want an old box of shit to drive around in. preferably two door, preferably with a "smaller" v8.. 302, 318, and so on. something an old lady would have cruised around in through the 80's and 90's, and then died. and i want it cheap. i don't want to pay the "classic car" markup. i want a Dodge Dart, a Plymouth Valiant, maybe a Nova. what other models should i be looking for? i want a car that will sell for $3k or less in mechanically sound conditon, with the standard "there's only rust starting in the quarter panels the rest is clean i swear" rust, that i can bondo up and respray satin black and be captain badass in.
check out this Dart. shiiiiiit.

i'd register and daily my Galaxie 500, but it's longer than my dad's f body and the 390 gets about 12 mpg pulling its fat 4500 pound ass around.

yeah, a first gen mustang coupe would be pretty cheap. and everybody would think i was uncle jesse or some shit.
edit: i think a Falcon would have too much "classic lol" markup, since they're all early 60's and whatnot.

70's dart, satin black with the stripe around the trunk, 318, horse blankets over the seats, black steelies, cherry bomb glasspacks, those hood pins with the metal rope so you don't lose the pins.. oh yeah, that'd be badass.
Welcome to the darkside.
1972 Buick Skylark.
Do it up in a flat black + gloss black version of the GSX paint job, that would be sweet.
1973-75 Plymouth Duster or Dodge Dart Sport
73-74 Charger, but good luck finding one. There was one for sale this weekend for $2k.
I'd suggest a 73 Satellite like the one I just got, but finding one for that cheap in that good of shape was a total fluke.
Right now is a buyers market for these cars, so you should be able to get something a lot better for the same price than what you could last year.

man i've been on the dark side for years. Sport Compact Car just tricked me into buying a 240 in 2002. "build a silvia for $3000" they said. con artists.

There's a '72 Dodge Monaco that's been sitting at my grandpas house for at least 15 years, I've always thought about fixing it and driving it around.
Its just a big boat of a car but I love those headlights.

porsche 914 would be fun too.. mid engine, lightweight and cheap. Ive seen a few turbo vw powered 914s on craiglist, seemd pretty interesting.

god i love those, probably in my top 20 if not top 10 cars ever. what a monster. i've got the quarter panel emblem off one on my bookshelf, found one in the junkyard once.
but definitely not in the category of "cheap old cars". even if i found one for nothing, the gas would put me in the poor house. also i'd probably back into my house trying to turn it around in the driveway. i love how the corners are all bumper, like the designers new they were making a car that was too goddamn big.

the sixes and smaller v8's in the smaller cars (read: dart, 'stang) really aren't that bad on gas. it's the 390's, the 440's, the 18 foot long boats that get the shitty mileage... i guess if i had a long commute my idea of "bad on gas" would be different, though. but my daily commute is like ten minutes, so...
!Zar!

Well I would drive a hummer if that's all I had to worry about.
But my commute is about 45 mins (at higher than posted speeds).
So yeah. haha.
Not saying that I wouldn't. I mean my benz gets like 10mpg or something shitty like that.
Just have to be in the mood for it I guess.

I just wanna say that cars from the late 60's and early 70's fucking owned. There will never be anything else like them. I personally think those few short years were the pinnacle of automotive design and expression. Yeah technology and electronics are cool and all but seriously, those cars had everything I'd ever need. I don't need satellite navigation or radio, voice activated controls, a million switches on my steering wheel, traction control or electronic stability control, etc. I'll always love old school.
/nostalgic thoughts
I need to own at least 1 or 2 of these cars before I die
67-69 Camaro (a guy I know sold his '68 and still has his '69...refuses to sell it to me)
68-70 Charger (My pops had a '68...I know he misses that car)

Here's my cars for inspiration.
1974 Duster:
I paid $2650 for it, and put another $3500 worth of parts in it.
You can find them now for less than what I paid.
For example, a 318 auto '74 is going for about $2000 in beat driver condition.
a slant six '71 can be picked up for around $2500.
There are usually at least 6 for sale at any given time on craigslist.
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x158/DKapt/Yuri%20projects/Duster/Dustdevilshowresize.jpg
1973 Satellite:
I paid $1700.
If you can find one, you can get it from about $2000 for a project/shell, to about $4500 for decent driver. The prices on these recently went up a bit.

Bought a farm with a barn and found a brown...um car. Its a 1975 or 76 automatic 86000 miles, not 186K. Its got alittle rust around the edges, some small dents here and there, interior in decent shape, glass all good. Last registered in 1993, ran when parked. I believe the right front lower control arm got bent at one point and thats why it was put in the barn, to be fixed later... I blew up the tires and pulled it out with my atv, rolled real easy and the brakes even work. Undercarriage appears to be solid, wiring doesn't look like its been eaten away. Shoot me an email if interested, the car is here on the farm, located about 15 miles south of Salina and about 2 miles west of 135 on a paved road.
Thanks

I plan on buying one of these this coming spring, after I get out of some debt.
Wanna make my dream a reality, semi truck air bags, overbuild suspension, so I can lay frame, or pump up the bags and town my 240 on a full trailer.
WAT?????
Gonna fill the trunk with air compressors and tanks to fill those triaxle bags? hehe.

Thanks

But that's not a '66, looks like a '61. '62-'64 ha a slightly revised grill. '65 has a completely different front end, and starting in '66 they revised the front end again and had a body-line molded in the sides that I don't care for.

so now i'm planning to check this one out in person on sunday.
http://home.graffiti.net/ktdigital/scamp/2carfront.jpg http://home.graffiti.net/ktdigital/scamp/2carrear.jpg
'73 scamp, slant six/auto, super six intake/2bbl, split header for true duals, air conditioning, and 98k on the clock. it's on its second owner. standard quarter rust and the paint job is oxidized all over, but that's fine, because it's purple, and purple sucks.
his craigslist ads say he's looking for 3k, but i googled "slant six scamp" and a fucking VID of his exact car popped up, and the description says 2300. i might lowball and ask 2k for it. it looks very nice. here's the vid
YouTube - 1973 Plymouth Scamp (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puk0mGa7ykc)
i really don't enjoy that glasspack sound. some flowmaster 40's would be a great improvement, i think. buy this, sell my acura, spend some of the leftover cash on new mufflers, fixing the rust properly, a good stereo, and a bitchin' charcoal paint job.

IMHO glasspacks sound like shit...alot of newbs/rednecks in the domestic scene try to put them on F-bodys or Mustangs and I have never heard glasspacks on a car and thought "that sounded awesome". Not only do they sound shitty, they don't flow worth a damned either. If you want a cheap decent muffler I say go with either flowmaster 2 or 3 chambers depending on how loud you want it.

yeah, that's a very specific sound they make, i think the only car i'd come close to liking it on is a 40's ford or buick or something of that nature, honestly.
this would be a daily, and it's also a slant six so it's not really going to sound impressive ever anyway, but i'd still like a little rumble... what's the next step quieter from a 40 series?

yea, the engine seems fairly easy to take care of and might be reliable. thing that gets me is it has a 12qt dry sump sytstem on it. kinda surprising for a early 70's sedan. and apparantly the thing hauls ass with the 6.3.

i'm amazed i've owned ... fucking 9 cars now that i think about it, and none of them have ever been a Z.
and the pushbutton auto was an option for this car, not sure if i'm happy i don't have it. 3 on the tree should be good fun though. and that polara has a pretty crazy grille, i dig it

aaaaanyway, it's been 14 hours of miserable hell with all this shit, one fuckup after another. down forums where numbers were stored. keys were not stored where they should be stored. a tow dolly i was supposed to borrow, 30 miles out of my way, turned out to be a useless tow bar. uhaul took two hours to find me a trailer because they wouldn't rent me a dolly because "you can't use a tow dolly with a rwd car". once the trailer was finally picked up, it was rush hour. once on the road, roads to the highway were closed, and i wound up driving in circles in fucking Forest Park, STL's enormous knockoff of Central Park. tow cables snapped. tires were dry rotted and useless. feelings were hurt. fries were ordered, and came as regular instead of curly. penises were drawn on "rate our service" survey cards. cities lay in ruins.
anyway here's a dirty old sedan in my garage.

after messing with some shoddy wiring, the car now cranks, but it KEEPS CRANKING after i take the key out, until it feels like stopping. supposedly the issue is either the ignition switch or ignition relay. autozone doesn't sell the relay but they do sell the switch for ten bucks, so today is new ignition switch and spark plug wires, because there's a wasp nest on the wires and i don't want to clean it off, i'd rather just throw it away.

1950 ford coupe. Or 1950 mercury coupe. Drop it chop, it and flat black it. Mmmmmmmm. I plan on getting one. Then get a custom chrome bumper n take all the rest of the chrome off besides front n rear bumper. Plus you can find them in really good condition with a nicer v8 already in them. Been a dream of mine for a while now.
I'm huge on non-muscle old school American cars then beasting the shit out of them. Valiant being one of them. So great choice my friend I hope everything starts going well for you. Make sure u start a build thread or keep this one goin. I'm VERY into this thread. And not one hater yet!

rad, zach braff digs it
update: installed new ignition switch. i now get how easy hotwiring used to be, all the wires you'd need are labeled and prominently displayed on the back of the switch, which is easily accessed under the dash. ignition switch did NOT cure starter woes, so it's the starter relay.
while searching for a cheap relay, i came across Auto Parts Fast at RockAuto (http://www.rockauto.com) which has all the oe replacement parts i need for next to nothing. i was going to keep replacing parts one at a time until it ran proper, but to save on shipping, i'm just going to buy a huge load of parts at once. i just ordered:
-cap
-rotor
-points
-condenser
-coil resistor
-coil
-starter relay
-fuel filter
-air filter
all this comes out to about $70 shipped. in addition i've spent $30 on plug wires and the ignition switch. i've got fuel, i've got it cranking, so i just need the damn spark and we should see something.

Sweet man! I'm gonna bookmark that auto parts place. I'll be sure to use the website when I land me a 1950 ford/mercury coupe :D
haha zach Braff, I got it. Alot of people ask me if I ever saw scrubs, because of my forum name/ xbox gamertag. I'm not going to get into why I have this as my name. However, I am really stoked that your getting closer to your goal. I've never worked on older cars really. So this is a huge interest to me. I definately think it's going to benefit me. When I plan on making my street rod. Good to see a import fan also having an old school taste too :D keep it going dood!

this shitbox is pretty much rust free, save some mild surface rust here and there, the obligatory quarter panel rust all a bodies have (which isn't even that bad on it), and a fat rust crater in the driver's side floor pan. really not bad for a car that's been parked in a field for the last decade. from service records it appears it spent most of its life in texas and arizona, though. also a lot of southern california road maps in the glovebox. i can already tell you i have NO intentions of fixing the rust properly. i'll grind off the surface stuff, sure. but the quarters i'm just going to grind back and then fiberglass. and the floorpan.. i'll vacuum out the chunks then pour on some rustolem. might put the car up on jacks and get under it with some rattle can. but that's it. no replacement panels, no patches, no welding. it's a $300 car, fuck it.
in other news, my rockauto.com order has shipped and will be at my door wednesday. and NAPA will have my starter relay wednesday as well.
total expenses thus far:
$300 - car
$28 - coil, condenser, points, cap, rotor, coil resistor, fuel filter (rock auto)
$30 - plug wires, ignition switch (vatozone)
$20 - starter relay
$~60+gas - tow
so hopefully she starts and i can start worrying about the body. i pulled the plugs earlier and dumped some Marvel Mystery Oil in each cylinder under instruction from an a body forum, and gapped the crappy old plugs properly.
All right!
Stop whatcha doin'
'cause I'm about to ruin
the image and the style that ya used to.
I look funny
but yo I'm makin' money see
so yo world I hope you're ready for me.
Now gather round
I'm the new fool in town
and my sound's laid down by the Underground.
I drink up all the Hennessey ya got on ya shelf
so just let me introduce myself
My name is Humpty, pronounced with a Umpty.
Yo ladies, oh how I like to hump thee.
And all the rappers in the top ten--please allow me to bump thee.
I'm steppin' tall, y'all,
and just like Humpty Dumpty
you're gonna fall when the stereos pump me.
I like to rhyme,
I like my beats funky,
I'm spunky. I like my oatmeal lumpy.
I'm sick wit dis, straight gangsta mack
but sometimes I get ridiculous
I'll eat up all your crackers and your licorice
hey yo fat girl, c'mere--are ya ticklish?
Yeah, I called ya fat.
Look at me, I'm skinny
It never stopped me from gettin' busy
I'm a freak
I like the girls with the boom
I once got busy in a Burger King bathroom
I'm crazy.
Allow me to amaze thee.
They say I'm ugly but it just don't faze me.
I'm still gettin' in the girls' pants
and I even got my own dance
{Chorus:}
The Humpty Dance is your chance to do the hump
Do the Humpty Hump, come on and do the Humpty Hump
Do the Humpty Hump, just watch me do the Humpty Hump
Do ya know what I'm doin', doin' the Humpty Hump
Do the Humpty Hump, do the Humpty Hump
Verse Two:
People say "Yo, Humpty, you're really funny lookin'"
that's all right 'cause I get things cookin'
Ya stare, ya glare, ya constantly try to compare me
but ya can't get near me
I give 'em more, see, and on the floor, B,
all the girls they adore me
Oh yes, ladies, I'm really bein' sincere
'cause in a 69 my humpty nose will tickle ya rear.
My nose is big, uh-uh I'm not ashamed
Big like a pickle, I'm still gettin' paid
I get laid by the ladies, ya know I'm in charge,
both how I'm livin' and my nose is large
I get stoopid, I shoot an arrow like Cupid,
I use a word that don't mean nothin', like looptid
I sang on Doowhutchalike, and if ya missed it,
I'm the one who said just grab 'em in the biscuits
Also told ya that I like to bite
Well, yeah, I guess it's obvious, I also like to write.
All ya had to do was give Humpty a chance
and now I'm gonna do my dance.
{Chorus}
Breakdown:
Oh, yeah, that's the break, y'all
Let me hear a little bit of that bass groove right here
Oh, yeah!
Now that I told ya a little bit about myself
let me tell ya a little bit about this dance
It's real easy to do--check it out
Verse Three:
First I limp to the side like my leg was broken
Shakin' and twitchin' kinda like I was smokin'
Crazy wack funky
People say ya look like M.C. Hammer on crack, Humpty
That's all right 'cause my body's in motion
It's supposed to look like a fit or a convulsion
Anyone can play this game
This is my dance, y'all, Humpty Hump's my name
No two people will do it the same
Ya got it down when ya appear to be in pain
Humpin', funkin', jumpin',
jig around, shakin' ya rump,
and when the dude a chump pump points a finger like a stump
tell him step off, I'm doin' the Hump.
{Chorus}
Black people, do the Humpty Hump, do the Humpty Hump
White people, do the Humpty Hump, do the Humpty Hump
Puerto Ricans, do the Humpty Hump, just keep on doin' the hump
Samoans, do the Humpty Hump, do the Humpty Hump
Let's get stoopid!
{Chorus}
Oh, yeah, come on and break it down
Outro:
Once again, the Underground is in the house
I'd like to send a shout out to the whole world,
keep on doin' the Humpty Dance,
and to the ladies,
peace and humptiness forever
{Music and fade}

i just tried to swap out the flat with the spare, so i could roll it out into the sun shiney day and wash it.
i snapped three wheel studs, frowned, and decided to work indoors. i need to put some oil in each of the cylinders and regap the old plugs.
the spark plug is some huge size for which i do not have a socket. so i went to my car to roll out to harbor freight.
oh yeah, i have a fucking flat. RADICAL
