I love that Hollywood is finally turning to Graphic Novels and comic books when looking for good action movie plots. It's like a tried and true storyboard is out there and if it is popular in graphic novel/ comic book form it's almost a guaranteed success.
+1 for hell boy rocking my socks (V for vendetta also). This looks good too.

The Watchmen is one of the most sucessful graphic novels ever.. and its freaking kick ass, bloody and god damn awesome! If the movie wants to follow in the footsteps of the classic comic then they better make it one heavy ass R rated movie.

Visually impressive, style and tone look appropriately dark
We'll see if they butcher the story, which would be blasphemy.
Watchmen was a seminal story, it made superheros what they are today.

wish they released the director's cut in theaters. Stuff like that, you have to see at the movies (if not imax). a rental does it no justice.
that aside, I'm really impressed with the stuff Zach Synder is doing the last few years. dawn of the dead remake, 300, and now this.

i dunno, blu ray + enormous tv = still a pretty good experience. a friend of mine has a 73" DLP that i like to hijack, and my roommate and i are working on finding a decent projector to split...
but yeah, i'd take watching a movie in a theater over watching it at home any day.

true, you have a nice enough home theater system and the experience can be great.

This movie better not get canned!
LOS ANGELES — The dark and damaged superheroes of Warner Brothers (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/warner_bros_entertainment_inc/index.html?inline=nyt-org)’ “Watchmen,” set for release next March, have a new problem on their hands: a federal judge here ruled last week that they may belong to 20th Century Fox.
The judge, Gary A. Feess of United States District Court for the Central District of California, denied a request by Warner last Wednesday to dismiss Fox’s infringement claims.
In the suit, Fox said Warner had infringed its copyrights and interfered with contracts by filming the movie in spite of earlier agreements under which Fox acquired rights to the graphic novel on which it is based.
Fox lawyers have said they plan to seek an injunction blocking release of the film — one of next year’s most anticipated — pending a trial over its rights. In a statement, Scott Rowe, a Warner spokesman, said the judge’s ruling, while allowing the litigation to proceed, did not reflect on the merits of the case. “We respectfully disagree with Fox’s position,” Mr. Rowe’s statement said.
Written by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Gibbons, “Watchmen” tells the story of superheroes who have fallen into a netherworld of disgrace and personal torment. Long considered too difficult for a Hollywood film, it became a hot property after Zack Snyder (http://movies.nytimes.com/person/367818/Zack-Snyder?inline=nyt-per), the director of Warner’s hit “300,” took it as his next project, with a budget that published reports have put at about $120 million.
According to Fox’s lawsuit, however, Warner, in acquiring rights through the producer Lawrence Gordon, failed to acquire certain rights already owned by Fox, including the right to distribute any picture made by Mr. Gordon’s company.
The case, originally filed in February, echoes an earlier court fight that was resolved in 2005 when Warner agreed to pay the producer Robert B. Clark at least $17.5 million to settle claims that it had infringed his rights by making the “The Dukes of Hazzard” film with Johnny Knoxville.
The settlement came after Judge Feess, who presided in that case as well, issued a preliminary injunction that would have blocked the film’s release.

idk if sarcasm was intended, but 'bull-shit' news station and/or source is really more the rule than the exception. ditto for cnn, the enquirer, al-jareeza, etc. fox is actually kinda entertaining if you don't take it seriously. I would say their bias and quality of discussion is a good deal worse than the accuracy of what they report. then again, you have to take into consideration that its a ultimately a business catered towards a particular demographic (intentional or not). truth and objectivity are seldom profitable.
btw - have been reading the actual watchmen comic for the last few days. very entertaining read. I really wish film companies would consider more mature themed comics. there's certainly some good stuff out there.

so uh. i saw this tonight.
uh... well. i think i need to see it again where i can actually sit in a chair, i was pretty focused on how much my ass hurt sitting on the floor. got there an hour early, too. but, uh... i really, really don't see how anybody who hasn't read the gn could enjoy this. it looks great, but they cut enough out to where it's pretty much just the basic plotline, minus everything that made the book mind blowingly awesome. it's a good companion to the book but i don't think it's strong enough to stand on its own. my buddy said it's our generation's Dick Tracy.
this is just a first impression from a free advance screening in an over packed auditorium. i'll see it again in imax anyway, but... i don't think this will really be a GOOD film until somebody takes the director's cut, Black Freighter dvd, and the narrative dialog from the motion comic dvd, and slaps them all together into some sort of six hour epic.

Extremely weird, not as exiting as I thought it would be, too much time waisted around rorschac, goofy/gay characters instead of badass and exiting...and....wtf was up with that sex scene??
facts:

I'm just going to wait till June when they release the longer director's cut.
Lots of critics are calling the ending of this movie the biggest weakness,
saying mainly it's rushed and doesn't fit with the pacing of the rest of the film.
What's another 3 months to see something done right?
tbh - was a little skeptical they could fit such a long comic in 2 & half hrs.

that's true. worst case scenario I'll just rent.
It looks like it something that should be watched on the cinema,
but to me the narrative element is most important thing for movies.
better to rent a great film than to watch something that feels unfinished on the big screen imo.
that aside it's interesting to see how controversial this film is.

Preacher is such a bad ass graphic novel
there was talk of a film a couple of years ago

Rorschach and Nite Owl were probably the the best imo. Movie was a bit slow but it couldve been better if they hadnt added in so many sequences that were irrelevant to the plot (ie the sex scenes, which wasnt bad seeing Malin Akerman :)). overall a nice movie to watch and VERY faithful to the actual comic, word for word.
PS Awesome action sequences!!! But maybe a little too much hype...

I don't know why all you guys are complaining about the movie...
It's only a few hours long and they can't fit EVERY SINGLE detail into it.
Of course its gonna have stuff cut out of it.
For what it was I thought it was awesome. I didn't fall asleep, I don't know what's up with all you fucking ADD kids falling asleep in movies. TAKE A FUCKING NAP, or GO TO SLEEP AT A NORMAL HOUR.
Seriously, if you're gonna pay 10 dollars and up, (18 for IMAX, which is what I paid) STAY AWAKE or fucking DON'T GO.
The movie had a good pace for what it was, I wasn't expecting an action movie, this isn't like Spider-man or Iron Man, its supposed to have depth; some of you guys are still caught up on Saturday morning cartoons or something, I swear to god.
I'm gonna see it again, probably not in IMAX, and if they release the directors cut I'll see that in IMAX too.

Ozymandias is the villian. in the comic, you are given reason after reason to hate him. in this, he's just some pasty guy with a weird looking pet.
there are plenty of details they should have left in, so that the story wouldn't be so hollow.

if anybody was expecting some full on action film with car chases and shit, this is the wrong movie. but i don't think most of us dislike the movie because of the lack of action. i dislike it because it doesn't live up to the hype. it isn't worthy of the title. and we don't get a second shot at having a Watchmen movie. this is what we're stuck with. a quarter of the story with none of the character development that made the story great.
I'm gonna see it again, probably not in IMAX, and if they release the directors cut I'll see that in IMAX too.
i still need to see it in IMAX, and if they release the ultimate cut i'll definitely see it and hope they get it right. also gonna get my hands on the Black Freighter dvd.

this movie is cut scene after cut scene of glowing blue cock for like the last 30 minutes..
you could tell that the novel had 8x the development and was way better. This was like taking cliff notes and making a movie from it.. just didn't deliver.. if you enjoyed the novel then you'll probably enjoy the movie... if you didn't read it your going to be WTF

I didn't read the novel and my girlfriend and I thought it was bad ass.
"I'm not locked in here with you, you're locked in here with ME." - baddest line in the movie!

I second that
what's there not to get?
the plot isn't that complicated to grasp
I remember that before this
superheroes didn't have dark sides
or committed crimes for the better good
they were very one dimensional
Watchmen, as I remember being said,
ushered the era of the modern superhero as we know it

I haven't read the comic and had no clue what to expect, so my expectations were based entirely on the previews. Therefore, I was pretty disappointed.
I definitely wasn't expecting it to last nearly 3 hours. I have no problem with long movies as long as they don't DRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAG like this one did. The whole thing felt very disjoint and confusing (probably would have been less so if I had known anything about the plot before I saw the movie), which really makes it feel as long as it is.
Fight scenes were brutal though. :)

i think they kidnapped one of the Blue Man Crew, stipped him nekkid and put him in this movie. Yes, superhero porno is what it was. Meh, it was aiiiiight at best.

I was more satisfied with the previews than the movie. I guess the best word for the movie was overhyped.

6 OUT OF 10
I have never read the novel and will admit that I went to see it because the trailer looked bad ass. I was really feeling the hype. I love going to the movies and I watch a lot of movies online. I watch a lot of movies other people may think suck so it's safe to say that I have an open mind. I wen't to see it opening night (big mistake) where I sat in a theater FULL OF FREAKING 14YR olds who came to see cool graphics and had no clue about the story or novel for sure. Oh and also the 2 people with babies were awesome.
The graphics were very cool less the blue member swinging across the screen.
It was long. I should have gone and seen it during the day where I could enjoy it and not be half asleep. Got it at 10:30pm and left and 1:30am.
You have to pay attention. There's alot of story going on in the movie. It maybe better to watch a few weeks from now when the theater is not crowded and you can really get into it. I think you have to watch it more than once to really take it all in. I think I'll watch it again when it comes out of DVD.

Rorschach is a badass. His monologues pwn the world.
Prison scene made me Jizz in my Pants.
The movie was blastphemus, compared to the novel.
Based solely on JUST the movie, it was good.
Blue Balls all day.

the movie was about as good as it could get. the whole story just doesnt translate onto the big screen. ive read the book and it was super cool seeing things on film, expecially rorschach's parts and some of dr manhattans stuff.
i liked it all except the following
- soundtrack, i thought the soundtrack FUCKING BLEW MY ASS. makes me angry just thinking about it.... hallelujah during the nite owl/silk spectre sex scene?!?! WTF FAIL!
along with ride of the valkerys(?) during dr manhattans vietnam part and having jimi hendrix at the end blaaaaaah sooo lame.
-silk spectre, didnt really like malin as her that much, super hot and looked the part but i duno just wasnt convinced by her
-adrian veidt, this guy sucked... so obviously the bad guy in this shit.... i dunno just didnt like it.
i loved the graphic novel so im prolly too critical... but oh well it was a cool flick.
ppl who are mad cuz they saw a blue penis.... stop looking at the bulge then *SNIP*.

Yeah soundtrack is really weak,
classics are about as cliched as they get.
the new stuff, I don't care for at all.

the reason they used those songs is because they were mentioned in the comic when it was written 20 years ago. of course they're going to be cliche now, but at least they're faithful.

I thought they did a decent job for shoving that book into a couple hours. loong... very long. I had to pee halfway through it, which was crappy.

yes fair enough.
i just cant agree with using hallelujah during the sex scene... it made me wanna laugh and puke at the same time.
BTW i really wish people would stop calling Zach Snyder a visionary director.
using stories that already exist, especially GRAPHIC NOVELS, does not make you a visionary!
what did people think about the use of the snyder slo-mo? al la 300?

I'm sure I was treed, but did you guys forget the period the movie happened in?
I thought hallelujah or whatever was fucking hilarious. My girlfriend covered her face because I was laughing so hard and loud!
As far as the blue cock. I'll break it down like this, Manhattan was so detached from humanity that being naked wasn't even on his mind as far as being rude or what not, he is completely oblivious to human nature.
also billy cruddup is not ripped like that either, or has long blue wiener... he was wearing a white jumpsuit covered in leds the whole movie. So it's psychological that you guys were all staring at his cock.
Reminds me when I posted nudes of my girlfriend on another site and made sure every picture had my cock in it, in some way or fashion.
Every reply to the thread complained about my cock LOL!!!

I liked 300 overall, but yes the slow-motion $ shots were a bit over-done to the point it got kinda campy. I would have preferred it all being shot at regular speeds. Maybe save the slo-mo for the decapitations/removal of appendages, and other gore worthy moments. Still, I enjoyed 300 (and the south park spoof) very much.
I'm not sure about 'visionary director' either, but he definitely is one of the best directors out there, esp when it comes to shooting action scenes. I still think Dawn of the Dead remake was his best work.

i understand that the freeze frame slomo stuff is supposed to look like comic book frames. and sometimes i think it's awesome... but other times it's just unnecessary. i'm on the fence, honestly.
and as far as "hallelujah", i thought it was an intentionally bad decision. don't quote me on it though.

My summary:
Visually stunning. So much eye candy.
Insulted the viewers intelligence w/ overemphasis on easy to understand plot-concepts - wasted valuable time which could have been directed toward better character development and plot details.
Too much of a too realistic dangling blue dong.
Violent as all hell. Pretty bad ass to show 90% of what they did.
Younger guys may have trouble getting into the story considering the era it was written in and prevalent fears and attitudes of the time.
Overall, 7 out of 10. Should have been split into 2 parts like Kill Bill IMO.

hahaha this blue cock shit is so funny.
i didnt even really see it... i caught every side boob that Malin threw down tho...
i guess i knew it was gonna be there in all its glory from the book, so didnt gravitate to it like you queers.... hahaha
either way, there was no chance of it ever being as good as the book... just kinda makes me sad that it will be a part of pop culture now... or at least a much bigger part as the novel wasnt well known by everyone..
