View Full Version : Tire Review Thread

I have searched and found scattered info on Max Rubber/Wheel Whore & other threads.
But since most of us constantly need new/replace tires, I vote for an official
“Tire Review Thread”… Where we can discuss/review just about TIRES!!!
ANY Brand/Model/Size for any application and EVEN review tire shops AND current specials/promotions that anyone (in any particular area) would like to share.
I already did www.citytireonline.com (http://www.citytireonline.com/) and love the service. John is a cool cat and has GREAT deals. Good place to start when shopping for tires in LA. I’m just looking into other options.
I currently own Dunlops FM901/Sport 8000 and Federals 595
BUT times are tough, so I’m looking into the “best value” tires for DD’in around town.
I have seen (online), but have no experience with Nexen, Maxxis and Trazano, just to name a few inexpensive tires. But I’m not necessary looking for inexpensive, more of “best value”. Also don’t want to order, just walk in and drive away.
FYI these would be wrapped on Z33 17” wheels. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Falken ZE-912 are really good DD tires.
Sumitomo Htrz III look really good for performance wise. This one has more grip it looks like and the 912 are going to last longer.
Those are the "best value" tires in my book.
there are some good reviews on tirerack.com.
you just gotta sift through the bs

potenza re01, very grippy summer tire. Do not daily drive, very expensive has a super stiff sidewall and wears down stupidly fast on spirited street driving.

good idea that won't work in practice
most people don't drive their cars hard enough (or enough, period) to tell the difference between one tire and another
lots of variables in suspension settings and road conditions
i used to run falken 912 tires on my miata and i think they were very good for the price. but if you have a lot of $$$, more power to you.

nankang ns-2 are pretty good for DD
they wear out slower than 595ss
for drifting, the ns-2 lasts longer but not as much grip as the 595

if you're in socal, you've started right. City tire I've heard are cool guys, or you can ask myself or dtc superstar(ernie) we dd our cars and hit the track at least once a month.
I say best value....nexen/Capitol/lexani/signet are exactly the same tire, they're spin offs of ohstu rubber that in turn makes a good product.(falken) just about all asain tire companies have they're hand in the same pot. I personally like the n3000 from nexen, good looking tire. Average about 30k depending on how you take care of them.
When dealing with lcr's (low cost radials) you kinda just have to try them, sometimes for the price, you can't lose. I would go no lower than nexen quality (Which meets all dot regs, foriengn and domestic)....anything under that might be suspect.
actually now that you guys mention it, I remember my falken 912's had the words "made from sumitomo rubber" molded into the sidewall. go figure

Runways by Federal are decent tires for DD. my brother is running them. Tread design is similar to the 595 and the tread wear rating is over 400.

Riken Raptors for DD are good tires, but for the occasional "I'm too lazy to make and actual U-turn and there's nobody in sight" kind of person, they suck ass. Well, at least if you still have a single cam.

I recently used three different pairs of tires on the rear at one event: Dunlop DZ101s, Federal 595s and Sumitomo HTZIIs. For me the Dunlops felt the best, stiffer sidewall, perfect grip for my setup/hp (SR with T25) and lasted the longest. The 595s were pretty good considering they were only $66, although I felt more "sloppy" with them as far as grip goes. The Sumitomos felt pretty bad, grip was on-off and I even understeered really bad with them when I hadn't all day (or year).
If I have the money, I would run the DZs all around (I run them on the front) but if I'm broke I would probably buy the 595s just to make it out. Haven't tried the 595RS yet but I heard they're pretty good.

word....sumi rubber and ohtsu rubber share stuff....sumi rubber also makes some dunlop tires, thats why the told htrzII looked like a sp sport 9000, and the old srixon looked like a dunlop sp a2

i have general uhp tires. 225/40/18. they are the cheapest tires ive ever had and probably my favorites. they wear really slow, have good dry traction, and amazing hydroplaning resistance. they were around $110 a piece mounted and balanced. they use to be rated number one on tirerack.com but i havent checked in a while. they kill all the toyos ive ever had.

the 912 are going to last longer.
This is good to know and the exact type of info I'm looking for.
Cuz my Sport 8000 were good, but were done 3/4 of the time my average tire has last. I have canyon runs for breakfast (commute to work)
Thanks every1 for their inputs.

Too bad General's UHP tire doesn't come in 235/40/17, or else I'm down for it.
Back to Falken FK452 for daily driving for me. Love those tires for daily driving. Pretty good traction dry and wet, and is very quiet.

I'd be rocking the DZs for DD'ing, but they don't make them in 235/40/17!!! They only make 235/45/17, wtf?!
(4) Falken RT-615's 275/40/17
Paid $598.80 shipped from OnlineTires.com
currently DDing them, until I get on the track :(

I've also ran General UHP tires there pretty good too. They lasted me a while and did well in the rain. Grip wasn't anything special but not bad for DD and lil hard driving. I liked them.
I still say ZE-912 cuz you there asymmetric so you can rotate them anyways you want. Also they have wear mark for them is kinda of a nice touch. I would get them if I didn't drive my car hard a lot.
But if your looking for a lil more grip and are going to last a while I'll Sumitomo Htrz III are the best value tire for that. Also there asymmetric.
Anyways. GL with your tire choice and hopefully you like the tires you picked.

Best tires I've ever owned were the old discontinued Azenis.
Had Nexen tires on oem s14 wheels and didn't like them one bit.
Currently have Falken ST115s 235/40/17 on the front and Khumo Ecsta MXs 235/45/17 on the back. R33 wheels. Love the comfort and grip but still need to dial in the front suspension wise.

mmm....kumho mx, great tire.
Can't wait for the new ecsta xs......supposed to be way better than the azenis for comprable price.

Im running 245/40/17 dunlop direzza z1 star specs. A bit expensive, about 150 each but the grip is the most grip in a tire ive experienced. Can take turns way faster then before with old tires. But now at tirerack the 245 and 255 sizes are on backorder and who knows when they'll be instock again.
