NOPI Drift is no more!
Posted by admin on 16 Jul 2008 | Tagged as: Major Announcements, NOPI
We have confirmed with as many sources as we can that this is an official announcement. NOPI Nationals will seize to exist and same with NOPI Englishtown. For those who have attended events of the series this year it shouldn’t really come as a shock.
July 16, 2008 It is with great regret that NOPI Motorsports, LLC has suspended operations for the summer and fall 2008. This will include NOPI Drag Racing Series, NOPI Drift Series and the NOPI NATIONALS Motorsports Supershow. The company is undergoing an organizational restructuring in light of severe adverse affects of a disappointing spring season. The economy and unfavorable weather resulted in underperformance of all spring events. Michael Meyers, president of NOPI Motorsports, reports that NOPI Motorsports is working with its clients and sponsors to minimize the uncertainty going forward. This is a reflection of the economic times in which we currently live. The countrywide economic and industry downturn has caused a slowdown and tightening of belts. This affects everyone and companies, at all levels, and NOPI Motorsports is no different. We understand the position this puts everyone in and we hope you can find in your heart to work with us through this terrible time. All of you are our friends and we have felt for many years that we were all a big family.
NOPI Motorsports hates this more than anyone as the many years of hard work, tradition and an industry we helped to shape would come to this.
Please watch nopi.com for future announcements.

I can only hope that HIN is next on the list for cancellations.
These Media/Manufacturer Circle Jerks suck the life out of the Enthusiasts Sector. Primedia publishes it, young dumb kids buy in to it, and poof, everything goes downhill.
but that's just my jaded point of view.

as far as ive seen over the years, nopi is a joke. theyre ALL (including HIN and others) turning into model fests and dance parties. wtf
but im gonna attend HIN with my car this year jsut so i know i did it once, haha.

That's the thing about Nopi...
If you were going there to take it seriously then your only fooling yourself.
It's not about the cars, it's about having a blast with your friends, looking at semi-hot girls, & partying your ass off.

I'm kinda glad. This may be bad for the whole aftermarket industry, but NOPI is just not the kinda think that tweaked my nipple.
Like ThatGuy said, it's just too ricey and showey. Not my cup of tea.

I can see that side of it as well. But if that's what I'm looking for, I'd rather just schedule more local meets.
Again, just my point of view.

Number One Parts Incorporated
I believe they got their start slinging VW parts way back in the day, then somehow became the Mecca for all that is cheap and tacky.

nopi events were just setup to break shit... I hated watching local guys trying their heart out to qualify and then come home with busted crap because someone put 5' of runoff room and then a solid hardwall. some locals also just got good sponsorship to do the nopi events. i'm sure their deal is going south at this moment as well.

Huge loss but a huge win :) yeah a lot of these big shows are a huge circle jerk
that sucks....
they talk about weather but i always thought drifting was rain or shine??
The drifting may have been, but the drag sucks in rain, so does the show, since a lot of these guys just have show cars and dont want them to get rained on/cant leave the doors/sunroof open to show off their shit, etc etc.
not that i'm disagreeing, the weather excuse is a total copout

people just dont enjoy car shows anymore? When i was like a lil high school tyke i was goin to import shows, all there was mostly cars and a few models *to add some eye candy to the cars or booth* ... now its vice versa where you got bikini contests and dance offs and guest rappers as main attractions......
then on top of that, nopi tv which idolizes all that as part of the car culture lifestyle. Where did it all go wrong?
Dont get me wrong, the last few years ive went to HIN, and ive enjoyed myself. HIN used to be mostly an asian scene. But now all these bitches tryin to find modeling careers there, and people who go because its the "cool" thing to do, and all the club aspects they put and hype into it, really sucks.
Oh and the annoyance of walking back to your car to see its been bombarded with club flyers and promotions.

LOL.
I didn't get my NOPI license and thus they failed.
Okay probably not.
the only thing i liked about nopi was nopi drift and the fact that it was not yet overun by domestic cars and that their were still agood amount of older cars drifting.

Agreed with most here. NOPI falling is good for the long run. The mentality promoted alot of things that we, as enthusiest with modified cars on the street, dont need.

anyone ever thought of a drift series with a claimer rule??
like at a lot of the regulated (read budget) racing circle/drag racing series's they have a rule that basically says when you show up and race. Anyone's engine can be bought for $5k. So if you want the winners engine you can buy it if you think he's got an unfair advantage.
But what if they used it for like affordability of the cars in and keep manufacturers out. Like an amateur class with a claimer of $10k per car and a pro class with a claimer of $15k per car. this would keep all the crap out and manufacturers out and the grass roots part of it in. No more supra's, soltices, 800hp burnout machines, skylines, etc etc. Just good amateurs and semi pro's in somewhat "beaters" hammering on them. If thats what people want is locals and semi pro dudes out there hanging it out then go for it.

The drifting aspect of NOPI was actually providing a quality motorsport to the show. Lasts year's showcase was pretty awesome. The Element drift was a site to see.
That part was pretty well organized and de-riced.

In the wake of the NOPI Nationals and the remainder of the NOPI Motorsports Season being cancelled this year, we feel compelled to express our sincere hope that the Myers Brothers and the entire NOPI organization will soon return to this industry better than ever. While ImportAlliance is a fundamentally different event than any of the NOPI events we can readily identify with the difficulty that is associated with producing a show at the level and quality that has become associated with the the NOPI Nationals.
In the meantime we will continue to produce and promote ImportAlliance for what it is - the Largest Import Car Meet in the country. For those of you who have never attended an ImportAlliance event and are wondering whether you should plan in the next few days to take the trip to Nashville Tennessee, here is what you can expect. It's a grassroots style…. Cruise-in/meet/social gathering/show-n-shine/learning opportunity/teaching opportunity/marketing opportunity/motorsports event. ImportAlliance is everything that you love about import cars. It is not a lifestyle event. It is how people who enjoy import cars get together and have fun while learning to make their cars even better. We know that a lot of energy goes into building cars and doing mods in preparation for national events. We would encourage you to consider bringing your car to ImportAlliance'08 to demonstrate the hard work you've invested in your car. We sincerely hope to see you and your car at ImportAlliance '08 on July 25th and 26th.
