This is for redtop btw. I have read two different things. Some people have had to mess with the TPS, others have not.
Heres what Im doing,
Set my CAS,
Start and let car warm up
Hook up timing light
Turn the CAS til the needle matches up to the second to last mark on the pulley.
Do I have to warm up the car and disconnect the TPS THEN do the timing?
Thanks for the help.

•start engine
•let it warm up
•hook up timing light on cyl number one (some use the little wire hook on the back on the harness, I've used the entire part of the harness for cyl 1 before with no problems.)
•unplug tps
•set timing to 15º behind top dead center, second mark from the right on the crank pulley.

Hmm so I guess disconnecting the TPS makes a difference. I will do this, just curious though. What difference does it make?

Dude, that's not the CAS, that's the crank pulley...

Im talking about setting the CAS, like TDC the motor and install it. I can see what you mean though. It did sound that way.

unplugging the tps, stops the ecu from adjusting the timing, revving the engine to 3grand help locks the ecu in timing mode.
If, your mark is still jumping around, try revving to 3krpm 3times then let idle; set timing.

When you guys are saying 2nd from the right on the crank pulley, is that facing the motor, or facing outward from the motor?

usually lol when you set the timing you have to look at the motor.
So looking at the pulley, left -5 0 5 10 15 20 right

How To Set Crank Angle Sensor (CAS) Timing on the SR20DET Engine (http://www.frsport.com/How-To-Set-Crank-Angle-Sensor--CAS--Timing-on-the-SR20DET-Engine_t_25.html)
That is EVERYTHING you need to know
it's second last marking on the pully 15DEG.

Now I'm lost. That link shows the pulley showing the tick mark being the second from the LEFT. The first few posts in this thread say second from the RIGHT.

That link is to set it top dead center, so if your adjusting your timing disreguard that link.

So TDC is on the 0 mark (second from left) and timing at 15 degrees is the second from the right.

The link is correct. Just read it first.
Replace the screws & plug in your CAS. Start your engine and let it warm up to normal operating temperature. After warmup, your engine should be idling around 850rpm - check your timing with a timing gun. Stock factory timing is at 15 degrees, which is the 2nd to last mark on the crank pulley.

I know what that guy meant...you can look from above directly down on the pulley or from the side...I took mine to a tuner even and he wasn't sure.
The angle between both views could be enough for up to 5deg of timing.
I do mine from above and the front of the car.

bumping most recent post.
just used a timing light for the first time. it's a digital one with advance and stuff. I am having trouble with this thing. here's what i did, (note: i did the frsport write up first for TDC, s14 sr)
1. warm up engine
2. unplug TPS
3. reved engine to 3k rpm few times
4. hooked up timing light
now, i pointed at the crank and it kept flashing at 0 deg. then, i turned the CAS to the right to advance the timing, but the idle would rise and the light would stop flashing. so i turn it back left and the idle would go down and flash at 0 deg again. what is going on?
next, i tried advancing the setting on the light to 15 deg and the light would flash where there is no marking. when i turn the CAS, the idle would go up again and thelight would not flash.
what am i doing wrong? sorry if it's confusing
