Here’s some truly disturbing news for nostalgic car owners. We recently spotted a billboard portraying a Datsun B210 (http://japanesenostalgiccar.com/blog/2008/05/30/datsun-sunny-a-poster-child-for-pollution/) as a generic polluting old car while visiting NorCal for the Motoring J Style (http://japanesenostalgiccar.com/article.cgi?section=events&article=mjs2008) show. Turned out, it was part of a California program (http://drivehealthy.com/) to buy back cars that fail the state’s infamously strict smog check. For up to $1000, these cars will be “retired” from service, meaning that the government is paying people to scrap old cars. According to a new Detroit News article, this program replaced 16,000 vehicles last year, and unfortunately for us nostalgists, the trend is growing.

think they are just targeting all the old piece of chit cars that poor people drive around now a days, you tend to stereotype that they probably run poorly.

this has been going on for years, and is a major problem.

another thing that happens, is that large companies will pay out for these old cars, and they get credit for pollution they create.

They crush those cars, yet people buy new cars that are worse polluters. I saw this article today about diesel Touregs being the worst polluters. As a diesel, you never have to smog it - yet it's worse than any car. WTF?

The Hummer H2 does make the fifth spot on our list of top 10 worst polluters, thanks to its overall heft and gas-guzzling V8 engine, but what pushes Volkswagen’s Touareg V10 TDI to the very top of the ranking is its large turbo-diesel engine. It dumps so much exhaust into the atmosphere that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency gives this midsize SUV its lowest air pollution score of 1.

The EPA ranks vehicles on an air pollution scale of 1 to 10, giving a 1 to those that pollute the most and a 10 to those that pollute the least. Most vehicles get an air pollution score of 6. Highly efficient models like the Ford Escape Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid and Toyota Prius earn a 9.5, which is currently the highest rating any vehicle gets.
