Ok I already asked this on FA but its really dead over there so...

As you can see in the picture, the seal is pushed further in at the top than at the bottom (12 o'clock vs 6)

I dont want to damage the seal by trying to pull it back out flush with the rest of it.

What Im wondering is

Can I push the rest in to be even with the top?

Is there an actual correct depth that the seal is supposed to be seated at?

Will it seat itself properly with some use?

Thanks a lot.

You can't really put it too far in. It looks to be fine but I would try to make it as even as possible. A seal will never seat itself. From what I remember it can only go on so far.

That gash on the top may not be too good. You might want to remove that one and get a new one. They are cheap.

that gash he mentioned will turn into a big hole and you will have a fat leak. replaced it while you are at it

Yeah I will replace it.

Im still not sure as to where the seal is really supposed to sit?
The original one was flush with the little taper on the outside edge.

Is that the proper place or is it supposed to be in further?

There are usually stops behind any seal to keep it from going too far, if it hasn't bottomed out, press a little more until it does.
