All right, so last night I decided to take my week-old (to me) KA24DE S13 for a drive down the interstate. I hadn't gotten it above 45mph until last night. It's plagued with this rattling noise above 2000 RPM, so i keep revs low in the city - seller told me it was just exhaust problems (grr). Anyways, I was keeping it about 2500 rpm for about 7 minutes to make 65mph, and noticed it losing power up hills.

Right over the crest of a big big hill, it went batshit. Stalled out - restarted it - promptly died. pulled over...

It'll crank, turn over and even run if you give it gas, but there is a definite "loose metal" noise in the engine, and it dies if you let off the gas - quickly.

I've got a few suspects - timing chain guides went nuts, lifter possibly blown, perhaps valve guides...I've heard that the exhaust valves get burned in these engines too.

Any ideas? Towing it tomorrow to a shop

Did you notice the temperature gauge when you started losing power? Sorry to hear your car's in need of a doctor :(

pop the valve cover off and take a look, if the cams move when cranking, do a compression test.

find your results and then go about dealing with it from there

There is a slim chance that you threw a rod, mine did the same thing, I was going up hil at maybe 1/4 throttle holding 70mph then I had to go to half throttle then full and I still wouldn't hold speed. It ended up being a thrown rod. I don;'t mean to scare you with it, but it's a possibility.

I bet i through a rod but i'll know this weekend when i have time to look at it. I hope not but this is the motivator either way to save dough and get that SR20 in!!!!!!!!:)

if you threw a rod, one of your cylinders will be low in the chamber.

take the plugs out and use a long thin rod to see each cylinder's depth. #1 and 4 should be the same, and 2 and 3 should be the same.
