dolphin- just take newport blvd down a little bit more and go fish at balboa. not the pier but the side where the boardwalk is at. on a dock bait: bloodworms. you can catch yellow fins sandbass, and halibuts there. and at the same place you can rent one of those little skippy boats for half day and fish in the harbor. iforgot the name of the place. and where you rent those boats you can pay 5 dollars to fish on their docks and they give you live bait. goodluck

or you could come to maryland and fish in the chesapeak bay. catch some good size rock fish. i went out 2 years ago for 30 min and caught a 32" and a 31" rock.
and if you swim in it you will catch fishteria. hahaha

Whats up everyone! So, yesterday my girlfriend and I decided to go fishing since the weather was so beautiful. Grab the gear and head out to Newport Jetty, I didn't catch anything but I had my sister point and shoot camera, and snap some pix. Plus the tide was really low.

Sorry I didn't read through the whole thread. But there's a legit spot at malibu creek. Great thing about it, you can hit up las flores cyn as a cruise to get you pumped for fishing. My friends have a back way so we don't have to wait for public lot to open. You need a fishing license 20 bux all year or something or 30, and 13 or so for the day. Wooorth it. Hit meup if anybody wants to know where it is, and go soon. I just got my car today, so imma probably go this weekend.

Deep Sea fishing is where it's at for me. I go out of Mission Bay Sport Fishing down in San Diego, but they've changed names now. I want to try some of the charters out of the OC though.
Anyone have any recommendations on which ones to take?

If you want to go sport fishing i usually head out to newport landing at newport beach or go out to 22nd street landing out in san pedro, it's scary to go to the san spedro one calls all these tanker/cargo boats pass by you within like 50/100 yards! if im on a pier i usually go to seal beach over night but they don't allow that anymore soo i just go to redondo.. for lakes i go out to prado lake in corono and if im bored theres a small lake next to me called peck road lake and has some good size catfish, and before or after you go fishing at peck road you can go to a pick a part and get some stuff for you car! :) p.m if any of you guys wanna go fishing around socal, i havn't been in a while!

Whats up guys and gals, I went fishing again today, and today turn out better than the other day. Caught a under size calico 11inches buster, can't even keep it, and then caught a spotted bay bass 15inches keeper! The calico bass was caught off live smelt and the spotted bay was off a squid head. I had a good day of fishing today, looking forward for next week.

So...what do you fish with? Live bait? Frozen? Artificial? I use all 3...just depends but I shore fish like you but love deep sea fishing and also skiff fishing in the Sn Diego Bay and in Mission Bay. San Diego Bay I have caught a lot of big fish like batryas, hound sharks, Black Sea Bass (baby and safely released...theyre illegal to keep), bonito, sting rays, yellow fin croakers, corvina, etc. You should try renting a skiff sometime...its fun.

San Diego is a good place to fish at warm waters is the best! im hoping to go down to san d to and hit up the chartter boats and go out to catch some yellow fin or long fine. there a ban on salmon fishing for a while iirc

where in the nor bay do you fish at tinman? I need new spot to fish (i know some ppl keep it a secret), but I thought i ask.

I have my lifetime fishing license too. That reminds me, I have to send in the salmon punch card and the steelhead fishing card.

TiNMAN

the salmon BAN BAN started in late 07 or beginning of 08.

before the closure, there were very strict regulations on salmon fishing...but it wasnt completely closed as it is right now.

where do i fish? i stay in the hayward/fremont/union city area. my local hole is in alameda. i hit up pittsburg when the stripers are running

depends on the year, and the runs. i usually just follow the fish/bait wherever they go if i am that serious about hooking up.

PM if you want specifics...a lot of fools burn spots on the fishing forums so i dont see why i cant share some info with a car homie. lol

In the cold months in Socal you can catch rock fish on deep sea charter boats. I do it often and really should get a lifetime license.
Also the boat I take out of Mission Bay will do 1/2, 3/4 and 1.5 day trips.
On their last 1.5 day trip to Punta Colonet they caught reds 4-8lbs and whitefish 3-7lbs and lings up to 15lbs.
I have custom rods and nothing but Avet Reels. Need to pick up my jigging rod and get an Avet MXL 2 speed for it.

This was my catch of the day. Sucker put up a great fight for being a baby. Not to worry...this fine specimen was safely released with no injuries. :)

We did a pretty good job that day...caught alot of rays and houndsharks though but still good times!!! Also caught some YF Croakers and a few bass here and there. Wish we could have caught a nice Hali but couldnt find them.

Hmm...maybe I'll set up a tournament here for us who like to fish here in SD. That might be fun...lol! My catches from Cabo are even better. Rooster fish are fun to catch but I could never get one all the way up. Dorado's were a lot easier.

DAMN............ wow, screw fishing in newport, im hitting up SD from now on ahahaha, Is there a size limit to the Mahi? I always wanted to go on a chatter boat and go fishing out near catalina or where ever those guys take you. But everytime I ask those guys coming off the boat, they always tell me they got skunk.. So hopefully this summer, Ill drive down to SD and go on one of thsoe chatter boats, I heard they cross into Mexico waters for some good tuna fishing! By the way those are some really nice catch, Im going to try and go fishing this thursday or friday if its not raining, I gotta test out my new rod, its just sitting there collecting dust lol.

Bobadrift
02-17-2009, 01:27 PM
If you want to go on a summer trip for mahi or tuna you'll have to take a 1.5 day boat trip. Also the fee for a mexican permit is $15.
Going out to the islands they usually catch yellows and calico. Last time I went out that's what we were catching in addition to barries. I just used iron the entire time while others used live bait.

dolphin
02-17-2009, 05:03 PM
Not bad for the price, as long I catch something in a decent size, it will be well worth the money and trip! but then again even if i get skunk, i still have a good time fishing

ryceboy_124
02-17-2009, 06:07 PM
Yeah...the mahi was caught in Cabo. You can hook up on them on the 3/4 days if the timing is right...YT too. I think it was 2 summers ago when the albacore were running in healthy numbers. I should have went. Im kicking myself for it now. Mexico has really good fishing. In Cancun...we caught monster Barris...well, monsters compared to the ones here in SD. I'll post pix once I find those pictures.

I see a lot of people surfing near the jetties in Newport Beach, on a good day, a lot of photographer come out. The last time I saw a bunch of surfers and skimmers was in September I asked one of the guys why is there so much photographer and spectators, and he tells me they were a bunch of pros from New Zealand and they were doing a magazine photoshoot.

My buddies last year, when to seal beach and I guess they did like this 8 hour fishing day off the shore for leo sharks, and caught about 3 I believe, average 50 to 60 pounds. But I talked to my local tackle shop guy, he said the halis should be hitting off the surf, using Krocodile jigs.

Yeah there will be more trips in the coming months. They usually have 1/2 days, but the 3/4 and 1.5 day trips are organized. For the long haul trips they prefer experienced fishermen to have less tangles, etc. on board.

Balboa Pier — Our reporter Snookie says, “it finally got better this month. We couldn't get a lot of bait, but we did get just enough. Caught halibut in the surf area. Some thornbacks and shovelnosed guitarfish. Some mackerel and jacksmelt were caught. At least now there is an occasional whale passing by. We have seen San Clemente Island every day. For about a month now we have had an osprey visiting us for food. He is fun to watch. The jacksmelt fishermen have learned to protect their catches immediately. We have photographed him over and over. Makes a very good subject. Looking forward to this weeks better weather again.” How To Get There: From the Pacific Coast Highway take Newport Blvd. which will turn into Balboa Blvd., follow it west to Palm Street. Turn right and follow it to the pier and the adjacent parking lot.

Newport Pier— Usually about the same as Balboa. How To Get There: From the Pacific Coast Highway take the Newport Blvd. turnoff and proceed west watching for signs directing traffic to the pier. The pier sits at the foot of McFadden Place.

Huntington Beach Pier — Mike, at Let's Go Fishing, says the big news lately was a couple of 6-foot plus threshers taken out at the end on live bait. Halibut are also making a nice showing although most are too small to keep (and it’s early in the year for both species). Inshore is kicking out some perch, yellowfins and spotfins while there’s been a good bite on top, mid-pier to the end, for mackerel, sardines and anchovies. The end section also produced a nice 15-inch calico bass recently, a fish rarely seen at the pier. Overall things have been very good which is nice to hear considering the report from many piers. How To Get There: Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) to Huntington Beach and the pier.

Seal Beach Pier — Mark at Big Fish Bait & Tackle. 1780-C. Pacific Coast Hwy, said things are surprisingly good. Anglers are getting a mix of sargo, corbina, calico and sand bass at the pier and while mussels and ghost shrimp are the top baits, fish are also falling to anchovies. Inshore there’s quite a few barred surfperch showing up but most have been small. Out at the end a few rubberlips are showing along with corn dog-size mackerel. How To Get There: From the Pacific Coast Highway simply take Main St. west and follow it to the pier.

Krocodiles, plastics, bait, hardbaits, etc will work. All depends on the surf condition, but hardbaits are the the go to bait to use in the surf mainly. lucky craft 110sp, 190sp are probably the best to score a hali on a night sunny day on the surf. Theres other hardbaits I use, but LC110sp is the bread n butter. Drop shotting a flash trix works really good while fishing jetties and rock points.

Im just waiting on condition to warm up and hit the surf. :naughtyd:

Right now only lake I been to that has been successful is prado. Trouts are hitting left n right with green power bait, inflated NC, and watermelon TB. Get a few LM with the usual drop shot with oxblood robo.

I been lately hitting the aquaducts in palmdale getting in the stripers action while its still perfect condition.

Honestly peirs sucks, really don't like that bait n wait game. But if you like that kind of fishing, Mussels and GS is the fav bait for the majority fish that bites there.

Im actually going to go fishing tomorrow, I bought a Shimano Tekota500 casting reel last week, and I been wanting to test it out. Won't be bum if I don't catch anything, I just want to be out there and relaxing, enjoying the scenery. Probably gonna go to the fish shop tomorrow and exchange the 500 and get the 600, I don't think it will make a difference. The stupid reason why Im exchanging it cause the description says 12 lbs line, 14 lbs line, and 16 lbs line. And im runnig 20 lbs on it, I just gotta have it matching up correctly. Hopefully ill get a few Bats although I believe the water is way to cold for them to be active. Wish me luck for tomorrow.

Have you ever used live bait for Halibuts? Im always fishing at Newport Habor bay, its one of my favorite spots for halis. But last summer I was having a hard time landing those suckers, everytime I see them near the surface, they just shoot down, and run the drag and come off the hook. Or the other case is when im using a live bait they won't swollow the bait they will sit there and hold on to it, until I grab my pole to check thats when I know im on. The setup im using is a carolina rig, with like a 3 feet liter, on a circle hook. I don't know if thats a good set up or not but I been using that for years and never done me wrong with other fish, just the stupid halibuts. lol. Could it be the hook?

SWEEEEEEET pic, man!

Thanks. My girl took the photo at just the right moment to get this shot. Tis was taken in Cabo on a 1/2 day trip on a small boat. Pretty damn fun time!!! Caught like 6 or 7 of these between the 2 of us and a bunch of Bonito and Barris. Hooked up on 2 roosters but both were lost in the rocks. Once you hook up...those roosters dive like crazy towards the rocks and then your line snaps. Boo!!!

For those who are wondering what a rooster fish looks like...heres a sample:

Most def live bait is perfect for halis for that wait n bait method. Thats the bait I use at the jetty with my other pole while I throw some jigs and lures with the other. My biggest hali off the jetty at seal beach was 29", using live bait. My biggest using a Metallic FM LC110SP was 34" at my local surf fishing spot. :naughty:

I need to know your set up your using to see where the probs your having hooking up a hali. My bait and wait setup for hali when carolina rig with 12lbs test mono, 1 1/2'-3' leader with a #4 owners misqito hook, either hook the bait thru the mouth to the nose or just behind the bung hole.

If you need help with other rigs or other type of fishing let me know, been fishing since like 3yrs old till now n the day I die...hahaha.

I actually do the same setup, Carolina rig with half ounce weight, and i forgot the size of the circle hook i was using lol. Today my set up for the conventional reel was, 1 1/5 ounce weight, with a owner cutting point 2/0 hook, Line size was 20lbs since i was giong for bat rays. But i end up catching a 18 inch halibut off frozen anchovies. That hali made my day hahaha. Ill post picture once i upload the pix from my camera phone.

Thanks for the heads up bro, I appriciate that information, that is very, very new to me. I thought he only harm part was the hook in its jaw, but damn I didn't know laying them down flat on that surface would harm them. Glad it swam away fine though! hahaha but the very interesting info is, You can't even pull them out of the water? God man... thats not cool, 2 years ago I was using my brothers fishing license at this public dock, and fish and game caught me, since my ID didn't match with the fishing license. So I got fine for 2 things "using another fisherman fishing license" and "not having a fishing license." So I went to go pay for these fine, for a good 2 month, they couldn't find the citation in there system, and I went back to teh court house every week to go pay for the citation, and they still can't find it. so after 2 months of going to court I stop trying, and guess what..... I got an arrest warrent for there stupid ass mistakes, But I guess its my fault too because I should of showed up on the due date as it said on the piece of paper. So I had to see the judge and he said i owe them 3000 bucks! im like wtf! and he gave me an option for community service, I chose community service. I learn my god damn lesson!

OH MY MOTHER F'EN GOD!!!! So tonight got off work early, I decided to go fishing at my favorite spots. Since I got a new shimano set up, I decided to test it out on bat rays, which is one of my favorite fish to catch. Well for the past 2 weeks I been getting skunked and not a single bat is taking my line. Until tonight, I was using a p line 20 pound test, owner size 6/0 hook, and half cut sardine for bait. So for 3 hours only caught 1 calico bass, im getting ready to bounce, then my drag just runs!!! mother fuck i was half way getting spooled already. But, because I messed up on my knot for the hook, the bat got away. Im guessing it was the way i tied my hook, i used the snailing a knot tie, because looking at the leader it was a clean cut. Im pretty bum that it got away, could of atleast been easily 30 to 40 pounds. Imma go back tomorrow for sure!!

I mainly go deep sea fishing and depending on what I catch I'll eat it. Alot of the rock fish caught in the winter are pretty good eating.
Summer it's Yellowtail and Calico for me. Unless I go to the Mexican waters and can catch a Tuna or Mahi.

Esp. how the water temp is, but yeah dude in newport harbor bay, thos freaken bat rays are prettyyyyyyy huge man. The other night i went out jsut for a few mins just to waste time before picking up my gf from school, on a frozen anchovie, 15 pound test = fail. Fought this bat maybeeeee for a good 10 mins that was it, and ran the line against something rough and snap the line. The biggest bat i've seen in person was at bal boa pier, man this thing was huge! atleast 100 pounds easy! but thanks to the angler the bat was to big, and he did not want to kill something so nice for no reason.

I have regular 2 speed Avets with no magnets. I just use thumb control and it works out well. I can still cast out far although with practice I'll be able to cast out a wooden clothespin with no birds nest.

If you're set on either an Avet or Trinidad then I'd say to Avet. The Avet reels are smaller than most equivalent reels, but have excellent drags and can hold a good amount of line. I have 2 Avet 2 speed SX reels. One is for bottom fishing and the other for surface. I also have a 2 speed Avet MXL for casting out Iron.
If you do get an Avet just make sure it's the 2 speed version.

I think my boss is using a avet jx, with 65 pounds of spectra for the back shot, 30 pound top shot, i guess he really wants to throw is bait out there further than anyone else on the boat lol

LOL! Yeah all this talk about fishing makes me glad I'm doing the 3/4 day tomorrow. One thing for sure is I love the Avet's. Just be prepared for the steep learning curve on casting with it properly. I have 50lb test braid and 100 yards 20lb fluorocarbon hybrid on my SX reels. I like Spectra, but I've been using Spiderwire Invisi-Braid.
If I can catch some yellowtail or calico I'll post up some pics. Hell, if I catch a big Red or Ling I'll post it up as well. Just gotta remember to bring my camera.

If you want to catch cat fish, Shrimp works believe it or not, or my favorite fresh cut mackerel.

With cat fish usually the smellier the better. They're bottom feeders in murky water and rely on sense of smell/touch rather than sight.

If you bleed the fish out, it won't discolor the meat like that. The blood makes the meat not taste as well, especially with sturgeon. Just put a slit between the gills is all that it takes.

PM and I'll give you some recipes for sturgeon as well.=)

Now, that's what I need to be fishing for! WOW! :faint:

Past couple weeks I've been fishing at Yucaipa Regional Park, trout was biting good there. Didn't catch anything at Lake Perris and nothing at Diamond Valley either.

Colorado River is next on the list next weekend.

Went out on a 3/4 day out of newport landing on sunday, caught a few calico, and a few fucken giant mackerel, when i was really shooting for the bonitos. Most of the fish caught i could catch in shore so it was pretty a bust. I hope bobadrift did better than i did on his 3/4 day. And i didn't bother taking any pictures cause they weren't worth taking.

Well my 3/4 day wasn't too great either. The large swells near the islands made for a sickening experience for some.
Caught mostly rock fish since there was nothing on the surface biting. I cast out iron into boils we came across and came up empty. Was most likely smaller mackerel causing the boils.
No pics from me either since I forgot my camera and remembered as I left Irvine. Wish it was warmer weather like the weekend before. I'm sure I could've caught some nice fish then.

Was it a good size bug? Sounds like it hahaha. If it was a real nice size bug, couple pounds atleast, enough to feed you and your pops, ill keep it hahaha. Sometimes I just like the break the rules a little bit (Thats if the lobster is legal size).

Maybe in the east coast?? I think in cali you just need a fishing license and lobster report card (i believe). And we can only catch those bugs thru october until march I think??? Hell what ever i said could be all wrong hahah.

Need to have a spiny lobster report card which is $8.40.
This is required for all persons taking spiny including persons who are not required to have a sport fishing license, such as persons who are under 16 years of age, persons who are fishing from a public pier and persons who are fishing on free fishing days.

Lobster season this year is from 10/3/09 to 3/17/10.

Lol those are the coldest days too. Anyways, I went camping on July 31st to August 3 at Kings Canyon Sequioa. It was real fun! Jumping off rocks into the river, riding/floating down stream, it wasn't anything crazy just a small little area where its some what like white waters pretty intense, ill have to post the pictures to show, can't explain hahaha. Also did some trout fishing again, 2nd time in 2 years, it was real fun!!!! 4 lb test with salmon eggs. Caught atleast over 12 trout, some were around 10 inches, and most were 6 inches long. It was still fun though, those little ones can put up a fight on a trout rod. On the 2nd day i lost a pretty good size trout, thats what one of the anglers told me. Since we were in waist deep waters. He said it was about 12 inches long not bad. Ill post pictures of my gf catching one of them. We didn't really take much pictures of fishing, but Ill post up some of the camping pictures anyways. Im pretty sure there are people on this forum who goes camping.
