what kind of suspension? coils? ....cake.
measure preload adjustment first, then measure the overall length of the coil. if the chassis is straight, then you should be fine.
im the same way. i spend too much time getting shit perfect, only to find out that the ground i dropped the car on wasnt level to begin with.

Since you have coilovers, get it corner weighted and balanced.

count the number of thread between to bottom perch and the spring perch for the from then for the back. make with a permanent marker.

Top of the fender arch to the ground. Make sure same level all around.

With the appropriate weight in the driver's seat. When you get in it the car will preload a little due to your weight.

if you're as anal retentive as you say you are, believe me, coils are your only solution.

Without a good set of struts/shocks to work with them you're not going to do any good. Any set of springs will lower the car, matching them to something that will ride and handle well is another matter. At that point you're near coilover prices.

If you can't afford to lower it correctly, then don't lower it.
Save your money.
you want it free?
chop your springs, and or heat them up.
will feel like crap! but if you want free and cheap!

We were talking to drfturkey, who jacked your Thread. :D
personally on my car, I get the fronts even because they are a bitch to adjust once on the car, then I do the rears since I unbolt one bolt and can spin the bottom mounts on my Tein Flex in the rear... then I measure from ground to bottom of sideskirt since my current sideskirts are straight and that is what will show uneven height.

Ive usually just busted out something to measure the differences between spring perches on the coils and made em all even.. When i have the time and a level ground, i would measure different areas of the chassis on the ground and adjust from there.. I never measure the center of teh wheel to the fender... Fenders on old cars can be tweaked etc so that doesnt work for me.

Which way do you turn the spring seat to make the car go lower? clockwise or counter?

You don't. You adjust height on the bottom section. The spring perch is for preload.

+1, I use my wheel lug nuts to measure the distance in between collars and such
Measure the ground from the pinch welds or the frame. Make sure it is even front and back

i measure the distance between the bottom of the jam nut to the top of the coil jam nut
Here's what I do:
Lower it initially, check for rubbing.
Lower it until it rubs.
Mark every spot that's rubbing, the hammer it a whole bunch until it's out of the way.
Lower it until it rubs again.
Once you've done that, put your hand up to measure how many exposed coils you have between the lower and upper collar (there shouldn't be many), and then go drive.
