So, the head is off the motor, gonna put the new one on, and got a little excited and didnt set tdc before the head was taken off. now i cant manuall turn the crank with the head off...is the timing chain just jamming it or is there some sort of lock on the block that prevents you from turning the crank when the head is off? its and s13 sr20

The timing chain could be bunched up, pull it up to simulate the head being there.
Otherwise it's just going to be hard to turn due to lack of lubrication.

so...thats kinda what I was thinking, wasnt using a breaker bar to try and turn it, just a ratchet. the motor just came in, who knows how long it was sitting and it seems pretty dry in there...so maybe i'll just pull the chain up, put a breaker bar on it and let it buck...

I wanna say no... im looking @ my engine now on a stand and the chain and guides block any view of that link - ur best bet is to remove the front cover and do it right

If you already have the head off, you might as well change the oil pump and double check the chain. You can turn the crank with out the head, just make sure the #1 cylinder is all the way to the top and the mark on the crank pulley is on the 2nd mark from the left.

^What they said.
Better safe then sorry and take the rest off and make sure its all lined up. While its apart, it is a really good idea to do some maintance.
