i swapped to electric from nitro
its too much stress on the motor
ROIDMONKEY
06-25-2008, 08:29 PM
yes but i just cant get into the electric bro, i like the NITRO sound a lot more. sounds more real. but yes requires a lot more maintance . other thing u dont need full throttle for drifting with NITRO. so a bit less stress for the motor

What'd you use to paint your body with? Did you spray it on the outside to give it the flat texture? I used to airbrush a lot of RC bodies, let me know if you need help painting bodies.
Used to spend big money on RC cars. Quit for a while and jumped back in just before the rc drifting got super huge years ago. Built myself an electric brushless powered TC3. Went to home depot, picked up some PVC tubing and built myself some drift tires cause they didn't have cool drifting tires when I got back into it lol.

I used to have a Tamiya TT01 with a Yokomo 180sx shell. I loved it to death but then I got a real 240, so I stop putting money into the RC and sold it for $140 IIRC.

yes i painted on the outside to get the flat flat look(i know they usually paint it on the inside but cause i use mat black i did it on the outside) it was my first one :) i got my a 350z 200mm today gonna do kinda like the AEM 350z black and yellow , this time ill paint it inside. found some crazzzy deep dish and crazy offset wheels on a denmark website LOL .
thanks for offering if i need help , let u know . i got some buds working on a hobbie store too. I use HPI drift tires , they r pretty good . on nitro cars i think i cant do PVC .to much power ,car would spin wheels to fast . u got to see the new HPI azenis rt615 drift tires in person .lol they r exact same as the real ones. very thick too. got those from HPI . for now im sticking with nitro ,lets see how long this motor last me

and even if you got a shell, you still gotta buy the stuff to get a car running.
an RC car will run you for less than 400 (and thats a good one with good stuff on it too)

roidmonkey what do u need to get so u can drift on a rs4 hpi nitro
they sell a KIT called STAGE D , is the RS4 2 speed or 1? u need 1 speed for drifting . I think u can with a 2 speed . also most important is drifting tires. HPI make them. i tried yokomo drift tires yesterday and they sucks big time. they get to sticky for drifting. switched to hpi drift radials WAYYY better. dont use PVC for nitro or the very hard compound tires.

Take that heat sink off. All it really does is act like a heat jacket to the motor.
A fan would be much more effective.
Also, look into getting a LRP sphere TC speed control or a Speed Passion speed control. MUCH better throttle feel. The mamba feels like an on and off switch once you make the change.

I used to run a Associated TC4 for carpet racing, but swap the tires and take it to the local skatepark (big open concrete slab) it was perfect for drifting.
RC cars take WAAAYYY to much money though. I'd invested ~$900 into my tmaxx before i stopped.

Fan's draw more power than I want to give up and never had any overheating problems. I don't have any on-off feeling problems with the Mamba, runs smooth for me. Honestly, I don't feel like spending money on anything that's not broken - only buying bodies when I need to, tires/wheels, or replacement parts when one breaks. I've spent enough and got everything where I want it to be - any money I get now goes to an engagement ring or turbo parts for my S14.

ive done some research and that s13 body is hot i also liked the ae86 body aswell i wasnt sure if they would "fit" on that chasis.... Pretty much most any body that is 190mm will fit an electric chassis. While 200mm is normaly ment for nitro chassis. But with the right offset rims, you can fit a 200mm body onto an electric chassis.

Fan won't draw any amperage that you will notice. Anyways, that motor is plenty, so power shouldn't be a problem.
After you start racing for a while, you will notice the lag that the mamba has since it is sensorless.
But whatever, you're right, if it isn't broke, dont' fix it.
But if you can make a dime off of selling it and come up in the end...

I've been drifting for a while now and I used to notice the lag when I first got the Mamba, however, after the firmware upgrade and messing with the ESC, I haven't had any issues. Most of the complaints come from the older firmware.

i still have a box full of abs pipe for tires i got a buddy in canada to ship me cause they only sell pvc here.
this is like 3 years ago when rc drifting was new.
cut the hexes and flipped my wheels backwards and ran them that way cause there were no cool wheels yet.

Then I see your point completely. All I do is drifting, so I any lag that is there is irrelevant to me. For racing, it would be more prevalent and bothersome.

Let me know how much you are planning on spending, and I can find a setup for you.

awesome bro, ive noticed most of the comps and people use electric for drifting more than NITRO ... any big reason?
Less maintenance. The motor doesn't heavily overpower the tires like nitro motors do. The noise. Easier to hold drift sessions in public areas. And a nitro car drifting isn't any more realistic than an electric car drifting.

I have a Yokomo Drift package with most of the hop ups already. Last things I need to get is the front blue aluminum C hubs and turn arms, blue motor mount, and a few other blue things. I like that look af the blue on the chassis, very nice. I also got some of the carbon peices to fit. I might build a custom carbon fiber chassis to fit my current setup. The stage 3 upgarde, carbon chassis set, you cant fit some of the blue parts from the standard setup. I also run a 19t motor with a Keyence Flash drift unlimited turn esc. I want to get a 23t for the local comps, 23t class.
As for bodies it came with the ER34 so I just did that one regular like the package, white with the stickers. I didnt quite know what I was doing at the time so thats why its jsut regular. After that did a team orange Evo 6, then a custom yokomo street sil80. My latest body is an RSR IS220 Altezza. Its painted to match the drift scion in D1. Anyways Ill post up some pics later.

No. Its more like 220 or so. Also it doesnt come with any electics but yokomo makes a kit for that too. So the drift package with the starters electronics kit is about $350. I suggest not getting the starters electronics kit cuz your just gonna upgrade anyways so spend about $80 more and get the good stuff now...

had it since 94.. then with ebay i started buying all the hop ups.. for some reason i feel in love with the vintage rc cars.. they handle and look more realistic then the new stuff.. all the new touring cars resemble pan cars.
Wheels are standard width with pvc piping to give em the deep lip look..
Car isnt that good at drifting.. or i just suck at setting it up. I need to replace the gearing since i stripped it from running a modified motor..
Pics from 04 when i was into the drift r/c craze... I dont play with it anymore.. i got a R34 body somewhere that I put LEDs on, was fun driving at night..
I got a old Tamiya F103 F1 chassis I want to play with.. dont know of any local onroad tracks around me.

Racing takes too much money...
When you're spending a hundred bucks or so every race just to be competitive. haha.
Oh well.
Nobody said it was cheap.
Are we talking rc or real cars here? Seriously though, please explain how it costs several hundred to race rc cars? I remember them being "expensive" when i was young and couldn't afford to replace 30 dollar tie rods and shocks...but hundreds EACH race? how?
HyperTek
07-04-2008, 02:00 PM
you pay to enter race.. shit breaks at the races... you gotta replace tires *tires are glued on by the way*, you need a few battery packs... you usually clean out your motor after every race *so you purchase motor cleaner and clean your stuff*. Battery packs dont last forever..
To be competitive you need high end electronics that usually cost over $100 each. Your car cant be a few years old because technology produces better r/c cars very so often.
Usually when something breaks, you decide to hop it up, or get the hop up part thats better..
It doesnt look much but yah, it all adds up.. esp if your r/c car isnt a top of the line model, you will be spending $$ for parts to make it faster etc
i used to race all over socal when Hobby People *was called Hobby Shack back in the day* used to have their parking lot races back in the mid 90s.. from sandiego to fountain valley, el cajon, riverside, etc etc... Luckily my Pops supported me through it, some kids parents wont even spend the money.
If your a racer, you tend not to play with your car outside of the track , you usually sort of save it til then. Pretty much like real cars.

I hate gluing tires. nitro cars doesnt use PVC or very hard compound tires cause the power. and new wheels comes with some sorta of sticky stuff that doesnt need to glue tires anymore, nitro needs more attention and maintainability than electric wich is a pain in the ass. , still like NITRO better tho

im looking to get into this what would be a good starter package for about 100-200$?
HyperTek
07-04-2008, 05:18 PM
Look for a RTR kit,*ready to run* means already built.
But you will still need to purchase battery packs and a charger.. Id suggest looking for a used car with everything for that range.. Probably wont be race ready but you can always mod it and enter low classes. HPI stuff is good, more popular now a days.. Tamiya is so so (im a tamiya fanboy tho). Check out the hobby shops in your area though, because some shops dont carry some cars/brands and you dont want to get stuck with a r/c car and not be able to replace parts locally.

Hypertek pretty much said it.
Trust me, $100 for a club race is easy.
And during regional races, it's even more than that.
Shit, some races have a $75+ entry fee.

an HPI E10 will run around 170-180 RTR, obviously if you wanna get into it more you might want to consider putting money into it. but as a starter chassis its great, i had one and it was a blast to drive, handled really well.

Well theres 2 of my favorite starter kits on the cheaper. There is the HPI E10 or the HPI Sprint 2. I recommend the Sprint 2 and goes for a little under $200, its more adjustable as faster as camber, toe, ride height, etc. I run a sprint 2 and its great, I've run it for almost 3 years. haha. Good luck with finding one.

Go with the sprint 2 if it's a choice between that or the e10.
The e10 is cool for a little while. But soon you'll notice it's short comings, like lack of bearings and plastic drive shaft.
Not to mention the horrible steering setup they use. Shit flexes more than a chinese acrobat.

E10 sucks, very sloppy design; Sprint2 is better and can use alot of parts from the RS4 and Cyclone. Personally, I like the Cyclone if you must have an HPI brand.

well he put a price range down so thats what i suggested.
the E10 doesnt suck, RC DriftClub's overall class-b 1st place winner had a very upgraded E10. also RC Driftclub had a toys for tots team drift event which they used HPI E10's which just upgraded ball bearings and all the drivers had a blast driving em.
the steering arm is flimsy but can be easily reaplaced with a large turnbuckle. anything else HPI got covered as far as uprades go.

Very true as far as the cyclone. The cyclone is also another option and also comes in fancy models ranging from carbon fiber and aluminum parts. I got my cyclone early in the year and I have to admit it is a very smooth and tunable chassis. But as far as the e10, it achieved its purpose of being a beginners chassis for people who wants to start r/c drifting or just bash around. Sprint 2 or Hot Bodies Cyclone is my vote hands down. :)

Of couse something like that wouldn't suck once you invest money into it.
Where we are getting is that it would be cheaper in the end to go with the sprint 2 which doesn't have as many short comings as the e10.
