so i'm prepping my tranny today to bolt it up to my engine and finally get everything mounted up in the car....and i notice that when i tip the tranny back (shifter lower than bellhousing), oil would leak out through the driveshaft hole.

I'm wondering if this is normal....i'm thinking its not.

Also, when i drained the oil there wasn't much in there, most likely due to it spilling out the back.

What needs to be replaced to fix this, and how hard is it?

BTW, it's an RB25 tranny. I know it's similar (if not identical) to the Z32 tranny, but i figure general Nissan transmission principals would apply to all. thanks!

Um, that's normal. The driveshaft seals the tail end, without you'll just pour the gear oil right out the back of the case. Stand it straight up and you'll loose every drop.

It's common.

The fluid runs out the back of the tranmission when tilted.

Completely normal.

thanks for the input. and it was only the old oil that's leaked out. I kept it stood up bellhousing down, but only noticed it spilling out today when i mounted it up on my engine stand and tipped it downwards. I'm bout to put in a gallon of redline, so no oil was wasted.

thanks again!!

A gallon will be too much. I don't think they hold that much, the KA/SR unit only holds 2.5qts.

rb25 tranny is 3.7 qts (1 gal). it's considerably larger than a ka/sr

Ah, good call then. It's been a while since I filled one.
