KAE timing chain rattle - already searched...

I have a quick question, on a sohc, if a timing chain rattle is left alone is it really that bad?
As in, will it grind into the water jacket or something?
Anything disasterous?

Just fix it, it will be alright for a little while but i would not reccomend running like that for long (although people do)

if it just rattles on startup for a few seconds, youll be fine for a long time. i think its just your timing tensioner building oil pressure slower than it used to. now you know you have problems when you hear something like marbles full time. this is when you must do the timing set, as well as drop the pan to clean out the pieces of timing guide LOL


but i recommend changing the timing set now. get rid of the annoying rattle, change out the old chain guides, and this way you wont have to clean the pan out later!

Could an engine with a rattling timing chain be trusted on a long, week long road trip though?

It doesn't rattle all the time, some days it wants to, sometimes it doesn't, but when it does rattle it isn't just at startup, it continues.:wtf:

After mine started rattling countinously in the low rpms, it lasted about 3k-5k miles before it tore the coolant jacket apart.

If it rattles all the time expect pieces of it in your oil pan already. Change it already and forget about it.

i did it myself, it was hard. do it right, bought a timing chain overhaul kit off ebay for like 70- 80 bucks. pull the pan, get all those chunks out. not fun, but the silence will be deafening. nissan will charge you out the wazoo!! wanted 3g's to fix it, 20hrs of labor

How about taking guides and chain and sprockets from like a blown KAE?

Alright, looking for a quick temporary fix (maybe get another 10k out of the motor)
Is it a good idea to weld any grooves in the cover that have already been worn?

Suggestions?

I don't think I have the time to change the full set before leaving on a 3000 mile roadtrip.
After that I will probably just swap in a DOHC.

Is welding a good Idea?
Any other temporary fixes?

it really does not take long to do and its better to do it now than pay for tow truck. If you find some tensioners with low mileage on them then throw them on

I'm sorry, I'm a noob.
So it is only the tensioners on the KAE timing chain that are finished?
Everything else is good still?
What would be the point of buying a complete kit then?

it'll eventually chainsaw through the cover, but that takes a long ass time.

how long did it take to replace the guide? for those that have done it, im about to do it also

to replace the guide, you have to take the whole front cover off. and pull the pan. so the work you have to do to is pretty much the same as replacing everything. just wanted to let you know.
