In the process of my own RB30DETT build, I decided to and ship a few extra blocks over to the states from Australia. Regardless whether it was 1 or 6 blocks, shipping was going to be outrageous- so what the hell! A friend of mine was able to source 6 blocks (1 for me 5 extra), complete from the oil pan to the pistons, and all Series 2. For those unfamiliar with the RB30 the Series 2 motors came with provisions for oil and water feed lines (perfect for single or twin turbo setups). After pulling the blocks from their donor vehicles, the blocks were drained and cleaned, and then palletized for shipment.
RB30 Info:
Again, for those unfamiliar, the RB30 is used as the foundation for the RB30DET/TT hybrid, which mates the RB30 block to either an RB25DET or RB26DETT head. The RB30, though some came turbocharged, was never offered as a DOHC, thus why the introduction of a 25 or 26 head has become such an attractive combination.
In addition, the hybrid is a more than worthwhile extra step for anyone introducing an RB into their Z or S chassis (or other non-nissan swap??). For more info as to what the hybrid build actually entails, the RB30 DOHC Guide can be downloaded courtesy of Skylinesaustralia.com at http://www.users.on.net/~jjc/rb30dohc/index.html. Of course there are kits available to stroke the RB26 out to 2.8L, but for a similar (if not less) expense 3.0L can be had with bulletproof factory Nissan technology.
What inspired my build, and a vehicle that I have the utmost respect for is the R.I.P.S. 240z- Here's the thread (http://www.users.on.net/~jjc/rb30dohc/index.html) announcing their record breaking 1/4 mi times, powered by an RB30/RB26 hybrid.
Location, Payment, Etc..
As of today, the RB30s are still en route to Wilmington, NC from Aus. on a container ship. Their scheduled arrival is June 30th, but I wanted to place the blocks up for sale a week early, just in case meeting me in Wilmington was more convenient for a potential buyer, as opposed to picking it up in Durham, NC or having it shipped. As mentioned, after I collect the blocks from port in Wilmington they will be stored in Durham (30 min. from Raleigh) and will be available for local pickup. If local pickup is impossible, I will be perfectly willing to ship the blocks (approx. 200 lbs) on a pallet to any address in the continental US or Canada. Also, I can arrange personal delivery, or a meeting, within a reasonable proximity of central North Carolina.
Of course I do not expect full payment from a buyer prior to the blocks' arrival, but I will insist on a small deposit if I am going to reserve a block. Same thing applies for a local buyer- I can deliver with my truck, but will require a small deposit, before I will make the trip. All deposits/payments can be made through Paypal to [email protected] Otherwise, I'll accept cashier's checks, money orders, or hell, Cash would be great too.
All in all guys and gals, I am a hobbyist just like yourself, who has become absolutely fascinated with the idea of an RB30DETT. Like I said, I decided to bring in the extra blocks, both to introduce a rare item (at least in the US) to the automotive community and make a little extra scratch to further my hobby. I know $1000 seems steep for a block, but they are fairly complete: Pan, Crank, Pistons, ConRods, etc.. However, as evident by the pics, they are missing some ancillaries ie. water pump, belts, etc... things though that should be replaced in any motor that has been stored (junked, haha). Also included in my asking price is the labor involved pulling the blocks, cleaning, packaging, shipping, domestic transport both here and in Aus, as well as all dock fees, customs fees, and taxes. To be completely honest, once you start reading up on the RB30, or of course if you already know, its readily apparent that there are an abundance of cheap RB30 blocks in Australia. They can be sourced, but I certainly would not recommend the ordeal to anyone but the most adventurous and deep-pocketed. In total, I spent about 5 months working out my shipment, and I had a really good contact that helped substantially. I wouldn't have even tried going into the purchasing/shipping process blind.
I guess the bottom line is my $1000 shot to the wallet is being offered to save you the hours upon hours and headache (not to mention the bookooz dinero) associated with sourcing an RB30. In the end though, there is a reason why I went through with finding an RB30 and why several others stateside before me did too. I urge you to check out R.I.P.S. 240z if you haven't already, it is truly amazing, and a testament to what can be done with a little ingenuity and a great starting platform.
Contact Info:
As above, my best form of contact is e-mail: [email protected] ([email protected])
I frequent every forum that I post in, so PM's are fairly reliable too.
I work long hours where I'm not available, but if you would like to contact me by phone, my number is: (919)824-9906
I would, of course, expect there to be several phone calls exchanged if someone were to arrange pickup either in Wilmington, Durham, or request that I deliver, so naturally I'll be attentive to any and all phone calls received regarding the blocks, and will try to return any questions as soon as I possibly can.
Once again, I am a huge enthusiast, but I tend to troll forums rather than vocalize my opinions. That is certainly reflected in my post count, here on Zilvia, but if you would like a better vouch, I am reasonably active on Nicoclub.com, specifically their RB board... several hundred posts. I'm not just some fly-by-night RB30 snake-oil salesman, and I will be more than happy to discuss the RB30, my shipment/sale, or any other related inquiries. Just get in touch with me, and hopefully we can work something out!
In case anyone is especially interested, here's a shot of the freighter the blocks are traveling on from Australia via Singapore and LA to Wilmington:
