View Full Version : Bench bleeding brake master cylinder

What's everybody's favourite technique for bench bleeding brake master cylinders?
I got sick of making a mess because I'm clumsy. Now I just throw the dry cylinder on the car, put SpeedBleeders on all 4 corners, and pump like mad while keeping an eye on the fluid level.
P.S. I don't actually run the car with SpeedBleeders. I just use them for bleeding the master cuz it's cleaner. I use normal bleeder bolts when bleeding the lines and calipers.

why not run the car with the speedbleeders, if they are already on? i have done it for years, no problems.

I've been using SpeedBleeders for years as well. I don't like them. They leak when the brakes get hot, and it's easy to strip/break the bolts if you overtighten.
I prefer regular OEM style bleeders. No leaks and stronger.

rag or cup under the master on the car, then just leave the lines loose till it starts dripping fluid from the fittings, tighten them up, then bleed the brakes as usually, and you should be fine. use a cup or rag and it shouldnt be to messy.

by "hot" are you talking track hot, or just hot from driving awhile. my car is dailied, not tracked and i have never had an issue.

Both. It's hit or miss. Some of them leak and some of them don't. The ones that leak are hard to fix so I don't want to bother.
There are others on here who feel the same way so I am not alone.

You should bleed the master cylinder before putting it in the car, its very easy. I went to Home Depot and found some clear tubing that fit inside the threading for the brake lines - cut it into about 1ft sections. Put one end in the master cylinder, the other end in the reservoir, add some fluid and pump the back end til no more bubbles come out.
I agree with you guys, the normal OEM bleeders are better.Even if you need two people to bleed them - it's always better to have someone there with you either way.

i am not trying to discredit your argument, i am sure its valid. i am just saying in my own experience i have never had that problem.
as you said, its hit or miss i am sure.

Do what you want. I have other things to fix instead of worrying about bleeders.

All new master cylinders come with fittings and hoses to bench bleed, buy one, snag the stuff, then return it. Kidding, that's stealing.
But it is indeed best to bench bleed using hoses to recirculate the fluid.
And speedbleeders are decent but they're even noted on the package as having a 3-4 cycle life on them, IE you can use them four times but then should replace them.

i just cover the holes with my fingers and pump until i feel the fluid come out (that's what she said!). makes tiny mess, but takes the entirety of about 5 seconds.

Where'd you guys get the bleeder valves you used to bench bleed the brake master cylinder and clutch master cylinder? All the ones I can find are too long to fit into the threads.
Edit: Forget my question I just saw the nico link.
