View Full Version : How far would you drive ?

:2f2f: Im currious how many miles you guys would or have driven to pick up parts for your car.

The reason im asking this is because I just drove 580 miles down to and 580 miles back(plus around town, food, ect...) to Tallahassee FL from Fayetteville NC to pick up a sr trans. with 24,000 miles on it for $120.

I could have paid him to ship it for the money I spent on gas(01 z28 at an avg. speed of 75mph) but I thought it would be fun for the wife and daughter. I started at 8:10am and got back the exact same time the next day. We stopped for gas, food, to sk8 for a bit, and to take a few cat naps. Other that that we did not get lost and I drove the whole time. I slept a total of 2.5 hours, that drive was not easy. To think it was all for my car(a 15 year old nissan).:2f2f:

Does anyone else have any similar stories ?

Naw i hate driving long distances lol. And so does the wife. It all depends on what it was. If it was a big part and the person WOULDN't ship... i'd probably make the trip. BUt not if i had the option to have it deliver'd lol.

Good on ya though :)

i would only drive really long distances for track time. i did a 1000km round trip 2 weeks back for a d-sport event.

I drove about 120 miles each way to pick up a mint s13 dash I probably wouldn't drive much further especially with gas at $4.20/gal :( back when gas was under $1/gal I would've made a trip out of it

I drove 760 miles one way to pick up my s13. A few years ago I drove from South Jersey to Ohio for a Sr20 trans. Gas wasn't as expensive then though. It would be cheaper to ship it now.

I had a 450 mile round trip to pick up my S13, a few months ago and we took a diesel pick up. Not a good idea with diesel around $4.50 at the time

but it was worth it

If gas + lodging + wear and tear on car + lost wages - personal enjoyment < shipping, then yes, you should drive to pick it up.

If not, then ship. Quite simple actually.

I drove from WI to Atlanta to buy my coupe. Before that I drove from WI to KY to buy my hatch.

With the price of gas now though, I don't know how cost effective it would be to travel so far for just a trans.

Well, the one advantage you have over shipping is that you don't get scammed.

That is true. The disadvantage is, that if you go all that way and it turns out to be an absolute pile, then you just wasted X amount of time and money. Might have just been easier to get scammed.

Maxed out at about a 3 hour drive each way for car parts, but my wife and I drove from Sacramento to LA to pick up a vintage recliner!
See, when it's something SHE wants, we can justify the journey, but if it's just for some dirty parts for my noisy car... LOL

we had a good trip for the most part. im on block leave so i dont have anything better to do. we brought a gameboy and a book for my wife and my laptop, power converter, and dvds for my daughter(who needs tv's in the dash or head rests). it sucked after i sk8ed for an hour or so at a local park, i had to drive back all sweaty.

when i lived in monterey ca i drove to sac twice(once to look and test drive a car, and the other to buy it) to buy a car. about two hours each way.

He told toldme over the phone what town he lived in and a could barley understand him because of his accent. i ended up going to the wrong town. after it was all said and done it had taken 2hrs to get and a quarter tank of gas for a $10 switch.

Drove 15 minutes to my first hatch, 15 minutes to my second hatch, 4hr round trip to my third, and had the 4th and 5th S13's towed to my house.

The furthest I've driven for car parts was 15 minutes away from the TJ border. So, 5hr round trip drive including horrid ass traffic.

Yeah, I pay for things to be shipped to my house nowadays.

60 miles there to pick up my 3rd hatch, got there at 2pm, wasn't running, (wiring all messed up, motor mounts, trani pilot bearing and clutch master cylinder)she limped all the way home and I stopped at a gas station 10 minutes from home at 4am where I accidentaly fell asleep and got harassed by 3 dumb cops haha, and 2 weeks ago I drove more than 4k miles round trip to mexico city, fun drive, and gas is less than $3/gal there

It really depends on the size/urgency of the need for the part... Say it is something like an engine or a car and you DO have the ability to drive and get it. Exitspeed, you apparently had time and did not have locals to case your cars out for you, and a used car is something major enough to warrant driving. Smaller things that can be shipped, however, might be better off shipping. Furthest I have driven for parts is about 220ish miles, to El Casa De ThatGuy, and I did that twice, once for an Engine harness that I HAD to have to get my car running, and once for the KG/MM suspension on my car, and I used that as an excuse to stop at the outlets in Smithfield, NC, to get some new shoes and clothes and shit on the way home.
If I didn't need the harness, I might have opted for shipping, and the pirce to ship the suspension might have made it not worth it.
To the OP: consider yourself lucky that you're right there on I-95, you didn't have complicated directions and shit to contend with, just a straight shot through 4 states.

I drove up with a buddy of mine a few years ago to Heavythrottle in Poughkeepsie NY. Long drive but if you pick a day that is gorgeous out driving isn't too bad for me. It took about 3.5 hours. Then again, that was when gas was only $1.50 a galllon.

These days with gas over 4 bones a gallon I'd say the only reason you drive that far is to make sure you are getting robbed. At least you had some quality family time!

It was sweet when you got to Pa lol. Michigan/the Midwest makes driving seem like a death sentence. I make that drive to and from school, and when i arrive in Pittsburgh after that 6 hour drive, i usually get a nice stiffy.

BACK ON TOPIC

I flew down to Lynchburg VA to get my s14. Drove about 7 hours home to Pittsburgh, then another 6 to Michigan. The first half of it was awesome mountain roads so i was in heaven :)
