View Full Version : Water Temp. Gauge Fluctuation

About a month or so ago, I noticed that my water temperature would fluctuate alot on my S14. Its not that it would over heat, but it would drop a lot. When the engine is warmed up and idle, it runs at normal temp range (below the halfway point). The water temp starts to DROP around 2,600rpm. The faster and harder I go in the car, the faster it falls (when engine is reving past 2600rpm). So the rate of the water temp falling, depends on the acceleration of the engine. As soon as I let the gas off the pedal, the water temp gauge needle rises back to normal temp range.
I dont really have a clue what is causing this. I am kind of worried that it might be something big. At first, I thought it might have been my thermostat, but I doubt it. Does anyone else know?? <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>

I tend to think thermostat. Temperature fluctuations from mid to high usually mean air in the system. Fluctuations from mid to low usually mean thermostat. It's $5.00 and 15 minutes to change - so it's not a bad place to start.

Well, so it is what I suspected it to be, the thermostat. Well I was searching around and couldn't find anything of a Write-up of installing a thermostat. I found it for others cars online, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a writup for a 240sx specifically (even better if its S14). But I think its basically the same for any car so..I'll see what I can manage. Any help is appreciated of course!

Well I did some asking around. It might not be my thermostat. It actually might be the temperature sensor (under the throttle body) that is not going to the ECU but to the gauge cluster. Im going to take a better look at it on Mon. Lets hope it not going to run me too much $$.

i dont think it would be air in the system. i notice on my car, a 95, that if there is just a little bit of air it will overheat. i remember someone showing me a page listing the recalls of the s14, more specifically for a 95. it listed the radiator being recalled. a newer desing was suppose to fix the problem. my car would overheat all the time and it would lose water too. i found the problem one day when changing oil cause i noticed water dripping from the pump. all i did was change the gasket and no problems since. i know this is totally opposite of your problem but just for reference.
but i agree with everyone else. if the thermostat stays open the water flows too freely and doesnt cool.
if you want a write up just pm me and ill write it up for you. ive done it.

My problem really isnt about overheating, but not enough heating! :D I dont know what to do yet. I guess just replace thermostat first. I would like that write up on the thermostat though. Thanks!
