There seems to be a decent amount of debate on this one. What do you guys think? If it is a sports car, is something like a BMW 335 coupe a sports car? Why or why not? Thanks! :)

I do believe it was made to be a sports car. My insurance company considers it to be a sports car...

"Sports car" is a pretty vague term, but yes the 240sx was originally designed as a budget sports car.

haha same here, I mean the SE model is a tad bit fat to be a sports car with the whole sun roof, power windows and super hicas this and that. Still puts a smile on my face when I pile through those corners :)

my insurance company calls it one and charges me bullshit rates so I'll go with a yes, might as well get some minor benefit to driving the damn thing besides calling it a "sports coupe"

What are the elements that constitute a 'sports car'?
Think about it and you'll have your answer.

its a nifty sport compact it can be whatever you want and thats the beuaty of it
it can be a drift car
it can be a drag car
it can be a dd
it can be an auto x car
the only thing i have yet to see a 240 be is a rally car but im sure it can be done

insurance will call it a sports car because it is a 2 door but make it whatever you want and classify it yourself

I agree. You can make any car into any of the things listed above though. I personally get hung up when people call 4 seats sports cars in that I don't view a 335 coupe as a sports car at all, so why should I view a 240sx as one. It is one of those things.

Haha...i remember those days.

The cars classification is sports coupe. I just never saw whats so sporty with the POS 155hp engine in stock form. I remember when my car was completely stock, how it would run out of breath when it gets closer to 5k rpm. It has nothing after 80mph.

That is another thing that bugged me about calling them a sports car. On the flip side, Porsche 911 is a sports car with 4 seats and 2 doors.

the S13 Fastback is a entry level sports car. The S13 Coupe is a Sports Coupe as is the S14. So Technically the S13 Fastback is a sports car. Though BMW coupes are also called Sports cars. its a debatable point. In Japan Nissan marketed the 180sx straight up as a sports car. In the United states it was initially introduced as a Sports car but they stuck the 12 valve single cam motor in it for Insurance reasons i.e. If it had started with the Twin Cam Insurance companies would have called it a Sports car. As it was Insurance companies initially called a compact that was sporty. They would later revise it to a Sports car. Nissan North America would also wind up aiming it more towards secretaries as to further avoid competition with the Z. Marketing mistake on their part. Then of course Nissan in the 90's was a management and marketing mess. Nissan North America still is somewhat kinda odd to say the least. Hahahahaha thank god for Carlos Ghosn.

LOL ah last time I checked Sports cars could carry passengers. Therefor a sports car is a passenger car.

Do you even understand standard automotive classifications? I.E. Truck, passenger car, Bus, Off Road vehicle, Motorcycle.
The vin plate on your car is per DOT standards. They make no differentiation between a sports car or a sports sedan or a or ordinary sedan or wagon, they are all passenger vehicles.

P.S. to the OP this has been hashed out a million times all over the net on almost all of the forums. Its a ongoing debate because people would rather let there perception rule the day over the facts. People are neg repping you because its technically lame thread. though I just posi rep'd you because they beat you down so much. Now read before you post and you might not get neg 'd again.

yeah, I know that thats the reason but its still bullshit, as my parents and sister combined were still less than mine on a (then) stock auto s14 and it wasn't much lower on the 1991 626 I had either. plus theres the fact that I have a flawless record, no traffic or parking tickets or accident. ever. and my sister doesnt.

If nissan really wanted to make a backseat in the 240/silvias then they failed epicly! I always considered it a padded place to set stuff down while you drive. No normal sized human could possibly fit back there.

Classic example of what I posted about a few posts back. Rather than accepting the facts, he has formed his own opinion and declared it sacrosanct!
So Given this reasoning I might add I guess he assumes a Porsche 911 is not a sports car because it too has a highly restrictive back seat as does the 944, Aston Martin Vantage and DB9. The list is large these are just a few.

Most of those cars aren't sports cars. I'm a BMW driver and I'll be the first to tell you they're not sports cars, They're sports sedans outside of the Z's which the Coupe passes and the Roadster barely does.

240's aren't sports cars IMHO especially not USDM 240's I'm sure I'll get hated for it but I think the term is used too loosely.

Aston Martins are GT's and P-cars are half and half

240's 944's get more of the sport coupe imo

"A sports car is an automobile designed for performance driving. Most sports cars are rear-wheel drive, have two seats, two doors, and are designed for precise handling, acceleration, and aesthetics. ..."

Means 240 is not a sports car and neither is BMW Audi and most other cars. They have other priorities put first such as USDM ones coming with single cam engine to avoid sports car status. A sports car is a sports car from the second the first drawing is made.

A sports car is a car like the old shelby cobras, C6 Z06's, Elise & Exiges,

Who am I to say though. I can't remember who said it, but:

"Ask five people the exact definition of a sports car, and you'll likely get five different answers"

Coupe, sedan, spyder, roadster, etc..... are all just terms to distinguish the different body designs that cars have. A "sports car" is any car that is designed with performance in mind regardless of bodystyle. By your definition there are no sports cars because they must be separated into specific bodystyles.

No I just don't think giant GT's, two door coupes like si's etc, and other cars not designed with performance as #1 priority are sports cars.

Weissmans, Radicals, Cobras, Catterham's, Nobles etc all have different body styles but are sports cars imo.

I read this thread and it reminded me about this one guy on this forum his name was "Peter_North" he said "The 240 is a budget sports car, because it has two tow hooks". Something along those lines, it made me laugh out loud. Anyway i think the 240sx can be counted as a sports car, I count it as one.

according to my insurance company, my car is a 1991 Nissan Maxima...haha

i think its just a sporty car, but not exactly a sport car...

my friend mr. "carparthookup" got a parking ticket a few years back. if you know his black silvia then you should know that the car has no nissan badge or 240sx badge anywhere. so, on the ticket Mr.Cop wrote ACURA INTEGRA! i just thought that was pretty funny!

This lame debate again?

If you want to call it a sports car, go for it.
If you don't, then don't.

But if you wish to blatantly ignore any eveidence put in front of you for the sake of continueing a useless argument.... do it somewhere else.

Besides, we all know it's only a sports car if you add a 5TH TOWHOOK!
