Ok...so alittle back story, bought new S5 conversion hubs about 8months ago, worked great, driver side bearing took a shit about 3 weeks ago... A "similar" noise with slight wheel play. took the hub off and had the bearing pressed out, bearing failure... had a new bearing pressed in, federal mogual brand from discount. Put it back on the next day this same noise was back, took it a to a shop, they took the hub off and noted that the bearing looked and felt like new, noise is not present when the car in the air (no load on the suspension), NO PLAY AT ALL in the hub. put everything back together and they didnt charge me cause the noise was still there. I converted back to 4 lug in the front, for a week, the noise was GONE... got both bearings pressed out of the S5s and new discount bearings pressed in AGAIN.... put them back on and had no issues...TILL... 6days later, the noise is is back, with a vengeance! and its in the passenger side now.
Again, no play in the either hubs, hub casing looks fine, no cracks or crazy warped shit.. hub spins like new on both sides and there is no noise when the car is in the air, brake pads are meaty, nothing appears to be binding or touching... I dont think it is the wheel bearings as ive changed them so man times, if it is whats causing them to go bad? could it be something suspension related?

this might be a stupid suggestion but did you grease the bearing? And did you torque the nut down to the correct torque? Maybe OEM bearing would be better.

wtf... my springs on my coilovers makes that same type of noise. just not that loud and not as often, only when i turn. i just oil em up and theyre good
Idk though man... that doesnt really sound like a bearing to me. not sure though

Probably just a crappy brand?
I'd go with an OEM bearing
I wouldnt really use any product with the word Discount in front of it. (Or Megan) LOLz
Especially wheel bearings

to me it sounded like your suspension more than a bearing but i am not by the car to really listen. but it couldn't hurt to check you suspension.

i just watch the vid
Sound like somthin binding or knocking your coils on your suspension

sounds like a spring. are they oem or new coils? maybe need 2 be greased

haha... i thought i was crazy for thinking it was a coil binding up. It doesnt seem like it would do that in a straight line though.
But when mine first started making that noise i got it off the ground and it didnt make a noise at all. So it quite possibly could be the spring binding up on the perch or whatever

Oem bearing. If it was spring it usaully only makes sounds when turning if you didnt seat the spring in correctly.

is your wheel hitting anything on the inside area of the wheel well? like possibly rubbing on the strut assembly a little bit, or try a different wheel. Make sure alll of your front suspension nuts and bolts are tight.

Dust sheild where its supposed to be?

i had that same noise before but not as loud. it turned out to be some rubbing issues and the wheel not being torqued down correctly

Thanks for all the replies!.. the dust sheild was cut and bent back when i put on the q45 calipers/rotors about 2 years ago, does not seem to be hitting. I put on a s14 se wheel yesterday to make sure the wheel wasnt rubbing, the noise was still there, so its not the wheel touching anything.
alot of ppl have suggested the springs are binding... I do not understand how the coilovers would bind in a straight line on a flat surface, anyone care to explain? also, wouldnt this go away once the spring has seated it self with the top perch? I have JIC SF1s, they suck ass, height adjustable only :(.
could worn bushings have anything to do with it? all the bushings on the sway bar are in pretty bad shape, as are the LCA balljoints, and the tie rod ends... THIS NOISE IS DRIVING ME NUTS...:ugh:

ya idk how or why they would make the noise in a straight line. It doesnt make sense to me really. Its something suspension related obviously. Well, in my opinion. Because when you take the load of the suspension it doesnt do it. Just oil up your springs and anything that may move when driving.
Also, its probably best you replace all the joints and bushings your talking about. But i dont think the tie rod ends would make that noise
oh, and when you oil things up, it might be best to do one thing at a time. Oil it, test drive it, if its still there oil the next thing, test drive it, and so on. That way when you oil something and it goes away, you can isolate the problem easier

hmm, yeah def sounds like springs rubbing on the perches, maybe loosen/tighten preload. try sleeving the springs with a rubber bike tire tube.
lol @ admitting your entire front end bushings/balljoints are in bad shape. replace them shits holmes
what's the clearance between the tire and the coil?
this may sound ridiculous, but maybe set your camber to WAY positive to maybe prevent the top most part of the inside of the wheel from hitting your coils. i feel like when your car is set back down on the ground, the tire starts rubbing on your coil springs and is like spinning them, that's why it's making that ridiculous noise.

jack the car up and spin the wheel, does it make the noise with out any weight on it? what about if you jack it up and then jack up the tire? try to narrow it down to whether it is a spinning issue or in your suspension

I put an s14 se wheel which has tons of clearance to rule out the wheels rubbing on anything, the noise was still there... clearance with these wheels is tight, 5mm at best.. but it clears!!
So you guys dont think its a hub/bearing noise at all? I was about to start ordering s14 spindles and hubs...

hmmm, naw i really don't think it's your spindles/hubs at all. but now that i saw that pic of your coils, looks like the threaded body is being ground down by the perch nuts or whatever you call them. my coils have never had metal shavings like that. i've never seen any pics with that shit either....swap stock struts on???

ugh... coilovers are used, collars are chewed up because the previous owner did not have the coilover spanner and was using a vice grip to adjust them... there are no shavings or anything of the sort, they are dirty and used, that is all.. trust me, they are not touching the wheel.

well did you oil them up? Just oil em and let us know. Oil around the spring perch where the spring rests

its most likely your dust brake cover.

I realize this thread is 2 months old, but instead of making a new thread I wanted to see if anyone had any feedback because I have brand new ichiba hubs on my s13 and its making this EXACT noise. Just not as excessively has the guys in the s14. No its not my coils or suspension parts hitting against anything. I've checked all that, I did notice however, some play in the hub bearings.

Sorry for the delay in updating this! My problem is solved... S5 HUB FTL... After changing the bearing in the hub with the noise AGAIN!!! <<NEW BEARING>> I swapped the hubs around, and sure enough a week later the side with the new bearing was making the noise. IMO, I think I somehow warped the hub when the bearing it came with fell apart, I drove on it for about a week making the noise with massive wheel play... so maybe that did the hub in even though there was no visible damage.
I changed that one hub back to OEM S13 4lug hub, but since im 5 lug I redrilled to 5lug (DIY THREAD FTW) with studs pressed in and haven't had an issue since.
Duffman, it could just be your bearing, I think my S5 Hub got fucked up... FYI, you can get a hub with an OEM bearing from the junkyard for about $15... Used OEM bearing > made in china "new" bearing...
DIY front 5LUG! TY HyperTek for an awesome idea! If I had known you could get away with doing this I would have gone this route from the start!

Machine shop charged me $70 to drill and press in the studs for 2 hubs, not to bad at all. Ill let you guys know if and when they crap out

Thank you for updating after you had found the problem! I have the exact same noise coming from both my wheels and i was convinced it was the bearings. Turns out i was correct. So now looks like i will be doing the DIY this week. Could you please post the link to the DIY. I would also like to know which bearing you used to press in the after market hubs? S13 or S14? Thank you! This helped me alot!
