Serial Experiments: Lain

Wiki
Lain is influenced by philosophical subjects such as reality, identity, and communication.[2] The series focuses on Lain Iwakura, an adolescent girl living in suburban Japan, and her introduction to the Wired, a global communications network similar to the Internet. Lain lives with her middle class family, which consists of her inexpressive older sister Mika, her cold mother, and her computer-obsessed father. The first ripple on the pond of Lain's lonely life appears when she learns that girls from her school have received an e-mail from Chisa Yomoda, a schoolmate who committed suicide. When Lain receives the message at home, Chisa tells her (in real time) that she is not dead, but has just "abandoned the flesh", and has found God in the Wired. From then on, Lain is bound to a quest which will take her ever deeper into both the network and her own thoughts.

petshop of horrors, boogiepop phantom, perfect blue, blood: the last vampire, and wicked city. there isn't really any scary anime out there. even if it is, i don't think it would be scary enough to make you not go to sleep. some are action-based most of the time.

The US dubbed and "remixed version" of Initial D is the scariest anime I've ever seen.

Berzerk - more gore than scary
Ghost Hunt was decent
Ninja Scroll is pretty freaky supernatural ninja anime
Death Note is a good supernatural suspense/thriller
... and what has been recommended.

Lain seems scary/weird but haven't seen it.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust isn't scary but it's awesome.

Don't really think an anime could be that scary. Maybe just play a scary game

I have seen probably about over 100 anime series. None of them are really scary at all. You'll get a few gruesome ones, but thats all there is to it. This new one I'm watching is actually a pretty good thriller. Many dead bodies and spirits. Its on my list of top 3 scariest animes.

It has good reviews too.
