Check the timing chain slide guide, im not familiar with the SOHC but if its like teh DOHC slide guides that maybe an explanation for the plastic pieces you see.

to make sure its not the guides id take off the pulleys and then take off the timing chain cover..is better to be safe than sorry..its 10x easier to work on a motor while its out..

yeah, hmm if i took off the timing chain cover, would i have to replace anything in the process? and when i go to put it back on would it be ok to use RTV gasket maker?

rtv will be fine..make sure u put a good bead...nothing will have to be replaced...but u might as well change the thermostat..u will need a impact gun to take off the crank pulley..

If its like the DOHC you need to make sure you use a new o-ring on the timing cover and yes RTV is what is used to seal the timing cover to teh block.

Again if its like the DOHC the one highlighed below is the one that is made of plastic (which is revised to a metal backed piece now days for the DOHC) not sure on the SOHC, but heres a picture and part numbers for the guide and bolts needed for the SOHC:

I had the same thing on my SOHC. It would be best to get a timing chain kit, and depending on how long you'll keep the motor, maybe a oil pump and water pump. When I took mine apart the guide bolt literally fell down from being stripped.

Just to let you know, if you buy a timing chain kit the bolts for the guides are not the same as the ones for the old guide(They usually come with new bolts). You probably don't need a new oil thrower as it's just a stamped piece of steel, but I would also buy a new camshaft sprocket as well. It might be cheaper to buy a kit.
