Just read a interesting article just now. Apparently they have genetically made a bug that can eat agricultural waste and excrete petrol.

It's not a bug, read more carefully. They're just using E. coli, like everyone else looking into this. The real issue is getting cellulose, the main carbohydrate in plant waste, broken down into sugars that the organisms can convert into hydrocarbons.
