my 1990 hatch has a constant "chain in movement" sound. Much like a bicycle if you held your head up to the chain. Is this the sign of a problem or just "normal" for an old beat up single cam?

replace the whole timing set before you rub a hole in the timing cover.

i had that before and it was a broken timing guide, i just removed it and it was fine.

probably your guides worn down and the chain rubbing on them. My KA had a weird noise like that at idle, not rattle but a rubbing noise... Ended up replacing the whole chain/tensioner/guide setup, which was a fucking PITA because of the oil pan/oil pickup.. You probably need the same work done, but start with removing your upper guide and see if that helps it. search we have lots of threads with instructions.

thanks guys. i thought that might be the issue. it is definitely coming from the top of the motor. I also have a coupe that has an actual hardcore timing chain problem that I will be fixing along with my mechanic buddies, so I guess I should just take what i learn from that and apply it to this motor afterwards before it gets any worse.

I'm a long time wrx owner but I have recently started messing with 240's after working at a nissan dealer for 3 years. even though both my coupe and hatch have many problems and are rough around the edges, there is something about them that is just....fun and entertaining.
