You're nuts, jet black? That body better be immaculate, or you're going to see every impefection. At least primer it with self-etching primer first.

I was thinking about using the Dupli-Color System as well, If you decide to go ahead with it, post up some pictures to see the results. I am curious as to see what it looks like compared to the rest of the brands out there. and IMO Black is a VERY hard color to paint.. but if your body is straight and imperfections out ... It should look Awesome!

I've used the duplicolor paint system on my daily driver. I am satisfied with it but if your looking for a showroom quality then go with a better brand. It's going to take a lot of wetsanding.

what does the self-etching primer do im new to this sooo
but i shaved the trunk and now im going over every body panel but i think i should just prime and spray cuz im gonna beat the shit out of it anyways

06-14-2008, 08:39 AM
what did you guys do about trim and the windows should i take the side windows out or what ,the doors are off now

06-14-2008, 08:48 AM
Self etching primer etches into the metal and promotes good adheasion with base paint. if you use self etching primer make sure u go down to the metal but using this is not nessasary.
For your second question it depends on the detail you are going to put in it. it is a good idea to take out the windows just because you dont see a line where th window is and you might see the old paint. whats the car color now? are you painting the door trims?
I just painted my car from grey to black and it took me a while to get the body straight, i aslo did black. after you sand primer and guide coat the whole car then block that down. after that spray base and clear you should be fine, im pretty sure they would give u instructions sine this is a DIY paint shop can u explain what they gave you and how it works im just curious what it comes with and how much it was.

waterboy
06-14-2008, 09:09 AM
the car was grey
go to the duplicolor website for details on the paint
its like $20 a qt
im going to use the primer, black base ,and i think clear with flake
all from duplicolor
i dont want to drop all my cash on paint and body

if anyone has pics used this and has pics that would be great

thanks for all the input so far

yea its not neccessary, the self etching primer but makes the paint stick. Just make sure you primer the car several times and go back over it to make sure you didn't miss anything because once you start painting with the dupli-color, if you see an imperfection you'll have to go back and sand it down again if you're not happy with it. And that usually sucks because sand paper takes off layers- meaning its hard to get consistency throughout if you make a mistake. If you have a spray gun though shouldn't be very difficult. Good luck. Also, Walmart carries a build up primer, it builds up to fill holes like in bondo.. or w/e. Its also sandable.

If your cars hasn't been painted over twice, than you'd be pretty safe to just spray onto the original paint. No primer needed. Of course you'll need to scuff the paint, putty the nicks/scratches, bondo the dings, and primer and block anywhere you did putty or bodywork but you won't need to primer the whole car.

Afaik, that's how its done at the shops but if the Duplicolor system REQUIRES primer as per the directions then just follow that.

G/L and post some before and afters.

i have used this before twice.

i painted my ae86 orange with it, and then i have painted a 240 red.

easy to spray, no mixxing, spray and go. dries fast.

use it in a 3 stage system. primer, paint, clear. this is a laquer paint, and must be used in 3 stages. it wont stick with out the primer. i tried it didnt work.

3 stage system is base color, transparent color, then clear. Primer is not a painting stage its a prep stage... and Its just primering. I would save ur self about another 300.00 and do a real paint job. Go with nason. Its cheap and easy to use, I;ll break it out down for u.
1 quart of expoxy primer and activators-25.00
1 quart of primer surfacer and activators-30.00
1 quart of base with 4:1 mixing ratio paint paint and activators-120.00
2 quarts of clear with hardener at a 4:1 mixing ratio giving u 1 gallon of clear.150.00
25.00 misc(tack cloth, guide coat, tape, masking paper)
boom done! now idk if u would get the same prices i can. It varies from store to store and ur relation with them. IF u go with like a top brand like dupont, ppg, sherwin williams. Expect about another 150-250.
so what the price different? like 25.00 for duplicolor paint and about 4 quarts of clear at 25.00? so its like 225.00 difference. Its still not show car but with a little more $ like another 150.00 u can make it show car with a cheap generic 2 stage paint. Or drop about 800-1100 on a true 3 stage paint jobs.(in materials for painting) i hope this helps. YOu can allways do a single stage. If ur on a budget. Its alot cheaper and come out better than duplicolor diy paint jobs.

But in my opinion and from what i have seen these duplicolor paints come out horrible and look like like diecast model painted toys or wet rattle can paint. The clear not last long. So ur gonna need alot coats. It also has poor adhesion.

i live in washington it has taken abuse over a year now and holding well. it is good for chips, it sprays easy, if you have to touch it up its no big deal. re coat anytime. sand it, do the 3 step process and go. super easy to spray, i did it myself, have minimal paint experience previous and it came out good, goes on smooth and simple.

budget paint, A++ in my book. i want to paint my 240 white again, and if i do, im using this system again it works so well. if you drifitng and beating up the car, get this, its so cheap to do

your are going to have to purchase more than primer, base and clear coat. duplicolor primer is too think. it always clogged up my gun. so, you will have to buy reducer. you'll also have to buy acetone for cleaning the gun unless you have several guns and use strainer when pouring the primer into the cup. not to mention all the sand paper. if you prep real good and take your time and not rush the job it should turn out good.

That Corolla is not exactly working in favour of the DupliColour system's reputation. That's a really dull looking paintjob, it lacks the gloss and depth of a normal base clear system.

I still have my doubts about the DC system. It's probably good for something like that drift car though, where cost outweighs having show quality paint; it still seems presentable.

Nice work, as always gsracer.

I've said it so many times before, and I'll say it again.

BUY YOUR OWN DAMN SET UP.

Spray your car for under $1,000 using REAL shit that shops use, and you end up with a compressor, spray gun, sander, and a TON of other shit.

Trial and error, obviously.

Once you have that shit on lock down, spray your buddies cars.

Start spraying cars for neighbors, relatives, friends, anybody.

Turn that $1,000 investment into profit.

Turned this:

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii246/CrimsonRockett/Brians%20S13/102_9951.jpg

Process:
http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii246/CrimsonRockett/Brians%20S13/DSCN3558.jpg

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii246/CrimsonRockett/Brians%20S13/DSCN3629.jpg

Into this:

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii246/CrimsonRockett/DSCN3768.jpg

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii246/CrimsonRockett/DSCN3791.jpg

Last picture was taken when the car was dusty as hell from sitting in the garage.

But, you get the point.

That was the first car I ever sprayed.

Now, I'm spraying my current shell, a few friends cars, and my own next month.

If you wanna first try it out, borrow a compressor and buy a cheap gun from Harbor Freight.

If you like it, buy a real set up and turn it into a profit.

gregfarz78
06-16-2008, 07:08 PM

I recentley painted my car with the duplicolor paint shop system. I still havnt wetsanded it yet it should look 10x better after i do. This was my first time ever doing any kind of body work. I wouldnt recommend this paint for anything other than a beater or track car, for just a little more money you can get much better paint.

Pros:
No mixing
easy to spray
easy to touch up or repaint
fairly cheap

Cons:
This stuff is super thin, expect to use about 5 quarts of each step.
the laquer doesnt seem to be very durable.

Crimson, you notice the streaks on the hood?

You can get rid of that next time you paint by even strokes and even height when spraying.

Try to spray half on, half off the surface.
Like.. start spraying half off the panel, then the next stroke overlaps halfway.

Takes a lil time and practice.

but I'm sure you;ll get it if you didnt get it by now.

Also, spraying another half coat in the opposite direction..
like... inside of up and down... side to side.

Silver is a hard color to spray evenly though, so I can't blame you.

the clear makes it all come together though:naughty:

CrimsonRockett

I know about the streaks.

When spraying it, I noticed it immediately, but didn't have much time to correct my error.

No biggie though.

The car is coming back to correct minor mistakes(the hood mainly) and other things that weren't done right.

Trial and error.

Again, Ive been doing this in my backyard for two and a half years, with no experience what so ever save what i read on the internet. Using a 30 gallon air compressor, and a 20 dollar harbor freight paint gun. The key is in the prep and you can paint it in a hurricane. Heres my 20 dollar harbor freight special. Thanks harbor frieght lol
