What does detonation sound like on a KA? On most cars, it ranges from "pennies in a can," to a "ping or knock," to a deep low sound.

Sometimes when I am in too high a gear and then I go up a hill, I get a nice deep bass "bump bump bump..."

EDIT - It's a stock 91 and I always run 93 (cause I like wasting money
155,000 miles. I may be losing some slight power, but I think it's cause I am used to driving a V8 Tahoe last weekend.

I might be completely wrong on this (like extremely wrong) But counting the fact that you are going uphill in a high gear, might it be the clutch slipping? I don't know if it even makes this noise... i have no clue why i posted this..

Actually, it's very bad to "lug" the motor. By lug I mean having the RPM's around 2000 or less and in 5th gear going like 30mph. It's your motor struggling to keep itself from stalling.

Detonation in the KA sounds just the same as any other car. I'm very familiar with detonation, as my old 89 16v Jetta ran at 10:1 compression, advanced timing, 93 octance, but crappy anti-knock system. I always tuned that car to run a little rich, but that came recommended from other people. Oh man, what fun, that car ran like a bat outta hell all the way up to 7200rpm. I could run down SI's and GSR's but never got to race a 240. But some jackass had to go steal and the police found it wrecked the next day!!!

Sorry just venting, this was a bad year for me and cars. After that I picked up a S13 but that got rear ending by some idiot in a Dodge ram that just left me with 2/3 of a car.

Now, in a S14, I guess it was meant to be.

Man, I feel your pain. I am a VW refugee myself. I spent a year looking for a G60 Corrado, an A3 Golf GTI, and an A2 GTI 16v. No luck here in Tennessee.
So I expanded to Nissan and found the 240sx.

I used to have a pic of a guy revving a 16v to 8k. He called it "the screamer"

I still want those nice recaros....

Enjoy the 240sx. For one thing, it won't give you shit like an A2 will.

Oh, it's not my clutch slipping. I think I am just putting to much load in too high a gear. I'll start shifting now

gotta be pretty dumb to go uphill in high gear.
