on heavythrottle.com, where I plan to get my swap from, it has s13 redtop, s13 blacktop, s14 T28 VTC and s15 sr20det. On the s14 one, what does the T28 VTC mean? and why does it have 15 more HP than the s13. and whats the diff. between the red top and black top engines. thanks

with a question like that it means u have not tried the search button. try it now.
the s14 SR has more hp BECUZ they have a T28! rather than a T25 like the S13s have. VTC is valve timing control. kinda like vtec you can say.
difference between redtop and black top? only that it came in different years of the s13, mayb some other ones, but i cant remember, if u want to know...

there's really nothing like VTEC. VTC (variable timing control) is a method for adjusting cam timing...just like Porsche's VarioCam system...BMW too. It does not change how much lift the cam has...just when it happens in the power stroke.

One is a high port flow, where as the other is a low-mid port flow. look @ the intake manifolds, and on the S14 w/ VTC the vavle cover slants...some other differenes....but you should search too, but not tryin to badger you either.... <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':crazy:'>

s13-t25
s14-t28 bigger turbo so the higher hp.
If you plan on upgrading i'd suggest the s13. The s13 has high port flow and s14 & s15 have low port.
Like v-tec the vtc is in another words variable valve timing, just another way to adjust the timing of the cams.
I think the only difference between the red top and black top s13 are the different years. I believe the black tops are newer.

So what you are telling us is that you plan to spend upwards of 4000-5000 grand on something you don't know shit about. Before I got my SR (through heavythrottle-great guys <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'> ) I did tons of research here, fresh alloy, google, HT, and UH.
Here's the scoop...you have read your super street too many times and heard all the raves but don't really know what it you are getting into.
1. Do you know that you will no longer be able to take your 240 to a Nissan Dealership to get worked on
2. Do you know that not a lot of mechanics know anything about the SR
3. Do you know that things will break (yes, the engine can go there but there is a lot of things that need to be changed and or moddified that will break)
4. Getting it done by HT will be a good way of getting quality work but still things will go wrong.
I just hope that you are very handy because any and all work that gets done to my SR is done by me...partially by choice but mostly because there is no other option. Think about that before you get all gung ho and I hope you have tons of money if you don't know how to work on turbo cars.
As an example: I need my clutch replaced. Where am I going to take it? Oh yeah that's right I have to spend $350 on a SR clutch and do it my damn self. Not that it will be a problem but I just don't have the time now to drop my entire tranny and create a possibility of massive downtime w/ my daily driver
PS many shops won't touch your car also because of the liability issues. A non-factory engine and workmanship they can't be sure of equals a big law suit <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':crazy:'>

NO
NONE of them have an EXTRA cam lobe which is actuated by oil pressure at a certain RPM and engine load. Vanos, VVTL-i, MiVec and all those are different things. Honda has a patent on VTEC. Others have patents on theirs.
I know this is mostly a semantic argument (as there are other things similar to VTEC...but nothing is the same as VTEC. Got it?<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>

Way to keep cool guys, but like Uiuc said, Ni5mo attempted his semantic argument, and this question was answered, so I'll just lock this before someone has something witty to say.
Also, NRcooled... I really have never thought about the SR motor that way. damn.
