Chris Bangle is a fucking Idiot.
I own a bmw,
I highly doubt I will own 04+ ever.
They just dont have it,
wtf is that, a pantie-hos car?

That's probably the most bad ass thing I've seen in awhile.
It's not so much awesome looking or anything, just unique I guess.

i'm guessing this fabric would be coated to be waterproof. probably more of a rubber or convertible canvas end product. how else would you drive it in rain? i'm guessing stains wouldn't really happen...
people slashing your sides would happen constantly, though. people are assholes.

Bed sheet body kits will be the future!!!!
I actualy think that this idea is the worst ever!!! Car designers need to just keep it simple!

Nice vagina hood. *sarcasm
It's an "interesting" concept to say the least but Chris Bangle really needs to do better things with his time, like improving his ugly car designs.
The headlights are cool though. But that's about it.

I think what's more important here is not what the car actually looks like, but what the technology and thought process that went into it.
I've been imagining tallights like that for a long time in my head.

god if i got into automotive design id in way over my head
lol theres something about artists/conceptuals that when they speak is right on the border between sounding like a genius and sounding like a retard
interesting concept but i doubt it will get made in that form, it will be interesting to see what advances like this mean for cars of the future tho

You guys are close-minded, it's the technology not the ugly car that is cool. Imagine the the weight reduction possibilities, ease of color change, and think about how easy your car would be to work on if you could take all the body panels off in 2 hours. The headlight design is cool, it's the doors that screw the whole concept up.

I bet that with some tweaking and such, this kind of design could become one of the most energy efficient vehicles out there. The "skins" could probably allow ridiculous aerodynamics, and weight reductions...

lolz what a douche he fuking talks like people are idiots " its an acronym a set of letters," wtf? geometry "shapes" function "how things work" i stoped it there. :ugh:

I'm gonna go get a Factory five car for my spaceframe and figure out how to mkae and awesome cloth body kthx.

the tail lights show through the fabric when they are on. I think this concept is amazing, but I'm the kind of guy that likes the crazy concept shit.

Probably very close to the same shit that's under every other cars paneling...

I don't care. I love it.
Of course this will never make it into production, but I love the idea. Extremely origional.
Headlights are full of win.

what if you get a what we call in the current painted bodied world a paint chip? what do you do then? patch the cloth or completely re-wrap it before it spreads and tears a huge hole?

I love modern lighting advances and designs. I think they look awesome...
The idea behind the folding panels, and stuff really changes the way that designers can hide different optional performance appendages on the car.
They could hide spoilers that come out at higher speeds to make them look less gauky along with hiding foglights door handles, tons of shit to make cars look smoother.
I think it's a good idea, it is just gonna take some time to catch on and become realistic.

I think the ideas koo, just think the rubber/cloth this use could be better. I want something that wont flex and show creases. Like when they opened the door, the skin creased. That made it look tacky as hell...

Amazing. Innovative. Inspiring. Thought provoking.
There are some really great ideas coming out of BMW these days.

This is what I get from the video.
I wonder what the practical benefits would be and how this would work in the real world regarding safety. I'm sure this exercise is not about that, but it would be interesting to hear where they plan to go with this technology.

I liked it, but I wouldnt want to get into a car accident with one though.
The way the lights work definately make the car.

Safety isnt that much a part of a car's skin anymore, it's more about the underlying structure, crumple zones, s***, w/e.
I agree that the folds are tacky as hell, however, what if they could make something that would become rigid when desired but also be flexible when desired (i am think batman begins, thank you, its probably possible, I would have to do more research).
Winking wins, period ;)

That is the first set of "pop-up" headlights that I really like. :D
I wouldn't mind if that trend caught on.

I think this is a great concept and idea. Perfect example of how to turn a car into an artform, as high end BMWs and other cars like it should be. The concept was explain brilliantly, the designer was very articulate and presented the idea clearly. While it may not be directly about "fuel economy", the ideas from concepts trickle down to the mainstream. What do you think F1 is all about. The cars are not only functional but an art form as well. In addition many of the ideas developed for F1 are found in your every day car. The same is true for concepts. This will obviously never see production, but I think it is worth every dime BMW put into it.

It is a kool idea really is if you in the Car design field but what if the car got cough on fire??
ThatGuy
06-12-2008, 03:04 PM
what if the car got cough on fire??
Then you'd buy new material and stretch it over the frame again. As opposed to replacing the damaged panels, priming, painting, clear coating, wet sanding, buffing...
Now if it's a fire hot enough to damage the frame underneath, then it would probably be hot enough to total a regular metal panel car anyway.

i think as car designers try and make things more futuristic shit just keeps getting tackier and tackier
and honestly as far as aerodynamics go that thing probably causes more drag than hard metal (you guys are dreaming)
if you don't understand what i mean i can make it a little easier on your brains think of when you swim in a pool your skin hitting the water makes little waves which puts a drag force on you
they recently came out with a new type of wet suit that is incredibly thick and the material is actually like a metal suit, people are breaking more records than ever in these suits
cloth would create an incredible drag at high speeds, as if the drag you have to overcome in horsepower going faster than 60 mph wasn't enough
a better idea is retractable body panels and parts similar to how soft tops work
electronic controlled wings, canards, and diffusers
now that is rad
bmw needs to stop fingering their butts and waving their art philosophies around and put the effort that they are into this into more practical areas
