View Full Version : Honolulu or Las Vegas?

What a great delimma to have. I am so excited I wanna throw up!

I have these to options for a job transfer. Both are only one chance openings as once the slot is filled, it is usually about 20 years to see it again when somebody retires. Both would be a lateral move with same job/ same pay.

Well I can't decide. I am single with no ties, but I want to start a family within the next 5-7 years. I've been trying to weigh the pros/cons

Las Vegas - Sin City
pros: party central, shopping, entertainment, boxing, gambling, etc...
centrally located, SLC, Denver, California, South America is all just a short flight away.
Property is fairly cheap, I can get a nice house with a pool in a good neighborhood for $300k.
NO STATE TAXES

Cons: It is STINKIN HOT and I will most likely be stuck working midnight shift with the lowest senority. Move date August 1st which would be a crunch to house hunt, sell stuff and get moved.

Honolulu - Paradise

PROS: 80 degrees year round, laid back, very desirable location, we have new routes to the far east and I can fly for free. There is no midnight shift, so I would be working day or afternoons and they only have one aircraft per day so it will be EASY work. the move date is not until November, so I would have plenty of time to sell stuff and house hunt.

CONS: It's expensive to live there, $500k for a decent house, shipping will be expensive, I will need to liquidate my property and start over. New culture and food, isolation... it's so remote.

So let me know what you think!

I would say Vegas...Honolulu is great for a trip but you are isolated. But I could think up of a huge perk in honolulu...if any of your girl friends come down to visit they could stay at your place ;)

I say Vegas. I know alot of ppl that have moved out there and they say the heat isnt so bad you just need to get used to it.

Vegas Bro, hawaii is so expensive....

And like you said a nice big ass house with a pool for 300k and under it's a sure shot and its only hot for like 2-3 months a year

If you're going to be paid the same, come to vegas. There's no state income tax here plus you can pick up housing dirt cheap right now. Cost of living is going to be alot cheaper than Hawaii and your dollars will go farther. Yeah the heat sucks, but there's no humidity so it's not as bad as some think.

I would do hawaii, but that's just me.
I could never live in vegas.

Plus the travel perks of hawaii sound awesome.
I really wouldn't mind living there.

Same here, I can never imagine myself living in Vegas. If you're planning to raise a family, I doubt Vegas would be the perfect place. Personally I wouldn't want my kids to be surrounded by gambling, alcohol, nightlife all their life. Not saying that thats all there is, but thats what it's know for.

Hawaii, on the other hand, might be a good change . Different culture/customs might be benificial in the long run. Less stress.
If I were to choose, it would be Hawaii for sure. Less spending money, but in return youre in a good environment to raise a family/relax/enjoy life.

Hope this helps!

Hmmm. Hawaii I think. More wow factor.

If for some reason you don't like it and move back, chicks will be like "ooooh, wow, you lived in Hawaii!?"

and your bros will be like

"Yo! Did you hear so-and-so moved to Hawaii!?"

If you came back from Vegas, they'd be like. "Oh. You lived in Nevada. I see... :ugh:"

haha

Vegas for sure, there's a lot more to Vegas than the strip and no one ever said you had to live in the city, the suburbs of Vegas aren't too bad. Hawaii you pay more for your house, your gas, your car parts, your groceries... you never stop paying. Unless they offer you a raise take Nevada and don't look back... you can do more to your car there too haha

Vegas is like a $2 whore. Nice to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there.

I would pick HI as it sounds like you can fly friends and family in.

Vegas gets my vote, I cant think of any real "Pro" for moving to HI. I've always been pretty partial to NV anyways, I wish I could move there and keep the same job I have now.

I think I would go with Vegas just based on what i've heard about the cost of living in Hawaii.

I say Vegas, why... because only 3 to 4 hrs away from LA..
And Hawaii ... nothing around the island...

..AND I saw a documentary about prostitutes in Hawaii... they all have penises. Do you really wanna live in a state where the working girls are actually dudes? I diddnt think so.

There is no reason you cant raise a family in the vegas area. its not all casinos, bars, and strip clubs.

Yeah I would choose Vegas since it's cheaper to live there and the heat isn't too bad..well for me it wasn't. I drove with no AC by choice..just with the windows rolled down. I heard it's much easier to get a car out there too compared to Hawaii. If i can find a job out in Vegas i would definitely move out there..good luck with whatever you choose.

I would choose Vegas. Vegas isn't all about the casinos,
the gambling, etc. The livable part of it is pretty nice, as
I'm there every month or so. Housing is dirt cheap for a pretty
decent sized house.

I would choose HI.

Although expensive. It's a paradise there.

Vegas would just have too much temptations for me.

Just me.

Everyone I talked to that has moved to Hawaii regrets
it. A lot of times they just want to get away, but can't.
They first have to book a flight, then get ready, etc. Vegas,
just pack up and drive. Isolation was what caused them to
move back to the mainland.

Vegas would be better for someone who is not married while Honolulu would be a great place to start a family. I would choose Honolulu but its going to be super expensive to by things. And with how the housing market is today its going to be tuff to sell your house/apratment.

If I were you - Vegas. You can get a nice house as was mentioned and raise a family outside the city. Its just a good location overall. Go with vegas and take trips to hawaii when you have free time.

Hawaii is kinda like 4chan, if you werent born there you wont really "get it". Its like theres a big inside joke and no one tells you why theyre laughing. Ive lived there and it was great but it feels good to be back home. The underlining theme of hawaiian life is really about preserving their culture. A culture that you probably dont know anything about.

In the end its all about how you wanna die. In a paradise bitten by a shark, or in a desert bitten by a rattlesnake.

.... If I were me, honolulu.

I've heard that about the locals not liking people from the mainland.

Some other things I heard about Hawaii and wondering if it's true...

Is it really 8 bucks for a gallon of milk?

Is the "real Hawaii" all ghetto like on Dog the bounty hunter?

Is everybody all jacked up on meth?

If you buy land do you actually own it? Or can they take it back from you after x amount of years?

Does it take 6 months to get a vehicle shipped there?

Do they quarantine your pets for months when you come to the island?

Vegas would probably be the more logical choice.

And when you live here, you learn to stay away from the strip. It's full of annoying people and traffic. I've been here my whole life and i've probably only been "on" the strip maybe 15 times? Only reason I go down there is when family is in town.

It is pretty hot here, but its not humid like Joel (mello) mentioned.

The choice for me would come down to the midnight shift. That just seems like you screwing yourself over completely for any social life.

do vegas, hawaii is overated, and mokes are idiots, and there is no drift scene here, unless you consider 17 year old flip kids with welded diffs drifters, and get ready for recon tickets!!!!

Head on over to forumshawaii.net and you will see how retarded people are

I have the same decision to make in about a month and i am going to vegas. hawaii has some fucked up car laws "recon" which limits what you can do. vegas is just pimp, ive spent quite a bit of time there, both on and off the strip and really enjoy it. houses are a little "cookie cutter" for me, but nothing that cant be fixed. not to mention its proximity to AZ, LA, and the mountains if you enjoy skiing.

Baka Sama

I've heard that about the locals not liking people from the mainland.

Kinda depends on the island. Most radicals from what Ive seen live on kuai. You usually just get girls blowing their horns at you if they see you walking. I use to just blow them a kiss back lol. ;)

Is it really 8 bucks for a gallon of milk?

Not that I have seen but then again I rarely if ever bought milk there.

Is the "real Hawaii" all ghetto like on Dog the bounty hunter?

Every place has its ghetto parts in any state. But I rather be in hawaii's ghettos than atlantas any day.

Is everybody all jacked up on meth?
Meth is a huge problem there, not on every island but most. We had to fight off a gang of ice heads one time. But then again we kinda brought it on ourselves swiming at 1am on a remote beach known to be in a bad place.

If you buy land do you actually own it? Or can they take it back from you after x amount of years?

Dont know, might wanna ask some hawaiian zilvias that.

Does it take 6 months to get a vehicle shipped there?

I dunno but I saw the big port in maui where cars and items came in and they looked backed up lol.

Do they quarantine your pets for months when you come to the island?

Probably. Better off just buying a pet in hawaii.

Recon is like any other states safety inspection. As long as you have your paper work in check there should be no problem.
