I bought a rolling shell a few months back well today I go looking for a VIN plate, the one in the engine bay was removed, didn't have the original dash, and nothing on the door jamb or firewall...the car was completely stripped when I bought it. Is there anywhere else on the car the VIN number might be stamped on maybe the frame or something?

Sounds like you either bought a vehicle that was the donor of the vins to a JDM vehicle or a stolen car. If the car still has the old registration it should be on there. I doubt the car can be registered since it missing all of the vins.

That's correct - those locations (and sometimes the engine/transmission) are the VIN locations. Firewall, dash (for access from outside the vehicle), and driver's side door jam.
You'll never pass a VIN verification, I wouldn't want to put any money into that shell if it's going to be a street car because of the possibility of getting stopped and impounded/crushed for no VINs.

So if I get the old registration off the guy I bought it from that should be enough?

I checked its not there looks like someone welded over it to fill in the numbers. I feel dumb for not checking sooner but I've always bought new cars so never had to deal with this problem :( He was going to make it a track car so I'm hoping maybe he just tore everything off w/o caring, and I hope he has the registration still if not I'm fucked :(

Nope, sorry to say but either way your fucked. There is no way to prove that its the actual vehicle. You might get the previous owner in trouble, if he is still using the vin for another car.

Yep, and I switching VINs is a federal crime.

Is there any way of getting a new VIN issued?

Check your state's laws. Generally you need to register it as either a kit car or a custom car with no VIN. Sometimes they can use the engine/chassis serial number or the state can assign you a chassis number to use.

Depends on the state, but if the vin has been welded over I can all but guarantee that its hot. Best to just wash your hands of it.

Get rid of it, and cut your losses.

You might get into trouble for someone elses work. Not worth it IMO. Find a new chassis
