anybody running a counter weighted shift knob with the hks shift spring kit?
I am looking for feedback on this setup before i buy them. I also want to know if anyone is using the nismo slave cylinder, and if it has any noticable pedal feel at all. Is this shit worth the investment?

i'ed like to know about the HKS shift springs too, if they make the shifter stiffer/notchy or what not.

found this when i was searching around.

HKS Shifter Return Spring Kit for the S13/S14 SR20DET transmission comes with 2 soft springs and 2 hard springs. Users has the choice of how they want to stiffen up the shifter by adding single or double spring combination into the shifter assembly. Kit comes with the HKS logo for the locking nut. This kit is great for stiffening up the shifter, increasing shifter feel, and aids in avoiding mis-shifts. This kit is recommended for all sorts of drivers (daily, track, or drift). To install, remove the 2 bolts from both sides of the transmission under the shifter assembly. It is a pretty straight forward swap.

hope that helps a little.

eh I had the nismo slave cylinder done. I really couldn't tell the difference afterwards, but maybe that's just me.

the hks shifter springs seem like a good idea. not expensive, and customizable as well. might get that thrown on later.

There's no point in running a Nismo slave unless your clutch is stiff enough to warrant it. If you're on stock clutch or slightly stiffer than stock, just stick with OEM.

Right on. Looks like I'll be sticking with the oem slave then. I think im going to purchase the hks spring setup, and I'll return with info on the feel and if its worth installing. Thanks for the feedback fellaz.

Better solution, and cheaper: take your OE springs out, go to any good size hardware store and find suitable replacements that are stiffer. Buy a few different ones, try them out, keep what feels best. At most you'll spend $15-20 instead of like $90 for the HKS kit. That's all they are anyway, why pay for a name when no one will ever see it?

How are the stock detent springs removed from the trans? I might try out some new ones while I've got my trans out to upgrade my clutch disk.

On the side of the shifter housing there's two large bolt heads, I think 22mm, remove them, they're caps. Springs pop right out.

Easy enough. AceHardware usually has some compression springs around, so I'll see what it feels like with some ghetto stuff tossed in there.

At least it's not like my E36's detent caps that are held in by demon stiff snap rings.

When you finish up, post up the sizes, and what you bought for those of us that are curious enough to try this... :)

I can almost recall they are the same size as the R/C car springs.
Those hardcore RC guy has different type of spring rate and length, so that's another place to shop

Rc car springs are the best bet.

Different sized are easily avalible as well tensions.

Very curious if anyone that poster here ever did this? I'm interested in these shifter return springs, but don't want to pay $90 for some stupid spring. Would rather bump and old thread than start a new one on the same topic.

Any input?

Pretty sure those people actually took the stock springs out, went to either Ace Hardware or the RC car stores, and just bought a few different springs to try out.

You could do the same.

Yeah, I don't see how what I said then is any different than now.

i run some springs that i got at a local tool makers shop they are very close in size to the stock 240 springs, just stiffer and they were also $5.72 each. i like the way they feel and when i wanna fly through the gears i never have a mis-shift like i used to.

I still can't think of a real purpose for these things. Guess I'll have to toss some in and see what it really does.

Do they just make the shifter pop into neutral faster or what?

SoSideways

Yeah the springs are stiffer, thus pushing the shifter back into the neutral position quicker... which will allow for better 2-3 shifts, and generally tighten up the shifter's side to side feel.

When I take out my transmission I'll post up some pictures in here and give measurements and stuff If it interests anyone. Then is should give a better idea for what people should look for at stores or whatever. Should be in a months or more so we will see....

Buddy of mine had it in his 180, eh, I'm on the fence about it. I dont see the added benefit of it honestly, its not like the stock shifter is shitty/notchy to begin with. Most of the time, if the shifter feels like crap in our cars, its because of the plastic grommet turning into poo.

I personally would rather invest on a short throw shifter and a fresh shifter grommet before upgrading the springs.

Much Thanks to FR sports that carries this items!! This shifter return spring is a MUST have!! I use it with the B&M shifter together and it makes a night & day difference. If you ever experience the shifter floping like crazy (with OEM springs) while driving very slow in low gear ( feels like its gonna stall ). These springs will instantly eliminate 95% of that feel! Plus the gear shifting is much certain which definitely reduce alot of mis-shift, and it makes heel & toe practice alot easier. Also, it drasticly improve clutch feel. Before the install, I thought I had a worn clutch, but after the install it feels almost like new again! The installation is really straight forward just like the pics shown at the user install. I installed the 300% springs instead of the sports set. It was really stiff on the first few days, but after 2 weeks having them, you'll love the Gr.A racing feel, and I drive it in daily city traffic. In time if the spring soften down a bit, then I'll put in the smaller spring to make it 350%. On a satisfied user pov I believe you may delay other upgrades, but not this one.

I have some OEMs ready to go in (i couldnt justify paying 100$ for some damn springs) But i have a question, when you removed the side springs (not the top one under the shifter) did any gear oil come out? Or a better question would be, do you have to drain the trans before you remove the bolts that cover the side springs? Thanks.

pretty sure the springs are going to be dry, or greased up at most, not oiled up.

It's on the side, just some bolt you pull and the spring comes out of a little sleeve

a friends car has these installed already and I gotta say, the shifter feels rock solid. a million times better than the sloppy gear shifter feel that was stock. I picked my HKS shift spring kit up from Enjuku during their Black Friday sale for $75!
