what company makes the most quiet canister exhaust? (without using the silencer)
for NA use and not turbo
i know the non-N1 style exhausts are probably more quiet but im liking the look of the canister exhausts more

I swear I just bought an Ebaystores 3" S13 ($170 shipped) exhaust basic N1 sytle...Thing is Quiet as hell.I was actually kinda bummed..though it is my daily driver and didn't want it THAT loud.I was running OEM pea shooter so I had to get something.Piping is piping in my book to a certain degree.
Full 3" back w/ test pipe and its super quiet.Bought a Resonated T/p just in case it was gonna be Too loud.Don't even want to put it on now.
Fit great (only had to cut Tow hook on Driverside rear to fit....low sound.Perfect.
It dosen't Hang Low either, like Most exhausts on the S13.

My A'Pexi N1 isn't that loud at all and it's a 3 inch on an NA KA. My buddy's HKS Hi-Power 3 inch on his NA KA was even quieter. I dunno about now since he recently got an SR.

buddyclub spec 2
but since you said "style".. look for any canister with a 2in opening and weld to your stock exhaust piping.

HKS Hi Power is pretty quiet
True!! I have it right now!! it is AMAZING quiet!!
Im try to combine the 2.5" HKS Hi-Power mid pipe with Greddy Trust dual end as 2.5" but straight pipe tho~ not sure it is going to be loud but going to try!!

Yeah, HKS Hi-power 2.5" pipe size would be the quietest. It was so quiet, I didnt even know the car was on at first...lol

out of the apex N1 and the HKS HiPer...
which one is more known to be the more quieter one?
I was surprised when people said their N1 was pretty quiet because I always thought N1s were one of the loudest exhausts lol.
does it just depend on the car? is the KA24 known to be pretty quiet with exhausts even at 3 inches?
also
how does the greddy exhaust compare to those two (apex n1 and hks hiPer) in sound
(or are they quiet in different ways? low pitch high pitch etc)

Greddy are generally quieter of the three.... but you have to remember everyone's opinion of quiet is fairly vast. I think my APEX'i N1 evo on my s13 is quiet and I also think my HKS hi power on my s14 is quiet as well, but then again a officer can think otherwise or so can my neighbors. Ive never heard a high pitched exhaust on a 240sx unless it was a muffler welded to oem piping. Most are low and bassy-ish and that's what sets off alarms.

3" is too much for the NA KA you just going to loss all the low end torque and will be LOUD if it is a straight piping.
Biggest piping for NA is 2.5 max, you can try smaller piping like 2.25 so less... but as in the market it is hard to find top brand making 2.5 or 2.25 now days. Otherwise, you just have to go local muffler shop to make one which is cheaper than HKS, Apex, Greddy, etc... but I recommand you to try HKS Hi-power 2.5 for your NA.
By the way, i am putting up a Greddy Trust Dual no cat with a HKS Hi-Power 2.5 mid with muff to see if that going to sound better and still have the low end torque also looks good with the dual end.
Also, where is China Town?? in SoCal LA?? or.... but anyways if you in SoCal area it is better to find an exhaust that will not make you pull over the the STUPID cops.. sucks to live in SoCal...

The Apex Gt Spec exhaust is the quietest 3.75 in
I've had it on my NA KA and you can hear your alternator and fan noise easily above the exhaust. In the higher RPM's it'll roar though ;)

ps. I was hit by a tow truck driver to all those that were wondering about the front end damage.
this is what it looks like now... Luckily I didn't have a passenger..

oh my god, you were in that? are you okay????
sorry for off topic,
i bought a basic 3 inch N1 style from ebizzle, and its loud as hell. i also have an exhaust leak, which might contribute to that. and it used to rattle against my chassis... so i dont really know what it properly sounds like.

i had an ebay can on stock pipe for a while
then i got a 5zigen pro racer cat back and it was a better sound and a bit quieter.
i guess it comes down to what's more important
looks - get a catback from any major company
price - get a can and resonator and have a pipe made
queitness - rs-r exmag

i dont get it, my experience is completely opposite of both of yours
bought a random ebay store 3" N1 style catback, it was loud as FUCK on my stock KA, then i bought a resonated test pipe and that made it even louder, sounded badass IMO.
then i went SR with the same exhaust setup and a blitz 3" dp, and now its even louder than ever
i get pulled over for loud exhaust almost daily.

does anyone know anything about the "HKS SILENT HI POWER"
http://www.hksusa.com/info/?id=2081
they only make it for the SR20 and its 75mm piping
(instead of 65 which the NA HiPer has)
but the SR20 Silent HiPer supposedly has a silencer built into the muffler
would a 75mm exhaust with a built in silencer be louder or a 65mm exhaust with nothing built in?
