I am planning on getting (for real no n00b talk about turbo w/nos) a Pioneer deh-p7400mp (~$230 thezeb.com), Audiobahn Aluminium components (~$80 ebay), amp to power the components (not sure which one yet maybe someone can offer a solution under $200), and infinity reference 4x6 in the back (~$42 ebay). Anybody have a reason why some of these are good or bad and what i should get different (HU must play mp3s though)? Also i know that i saw a previous post where someone had a picture of their component install in the front door of an s13, i searched but couldn't find it, so if anyone has installed components in their door i would appreciate any advice. What is the best size component 5.25" or 6.5" for the door? Is a sub really necessary if i have components (i know they aren't the same but will the components go low enough?)? Any advice would be appreciated.

thx everybody
I have a '91 s13 w/stock stereo(amped version) w/all blown speakers

the components will play most of the bass notes, just not as loudly or compellingly as a sub woofer, u might want to try hearing the components hooked up to the head unit first before buying an amp, the mosfet 50 is pretty beefy, and the head unit is a great choice, what u can do is focus on the front component set and forget about the rear deck speakers, instead get a sub woofer and amp, u dont really need any rear speakers, the soundstage should be up front any ways personally i like to have fronts and rears but this is more cost effective in my opinion

i got a pioneer 6400 after my 7300 got stolen. i loved both of them but i couldn't find a 7400 for less than $280 shipped when i was looking, that looks like a good deal. i'm not serious into car audio i just liked the built in cross overs and features like that so i wouldn't have to shell out a lot of money for decent sound.

EDIT: oops, i meant i got a premier 640... basically the 7400 minus the rear speaker outputs, mp3 capability and 2V instead of 4V outputs

What amp would be good if i decide to get one? Also which components are the best at sound quality and range, not so much loudness. I still need some information on the install for components up front.
thx

i'd say your gonna want to get a sub, perhaps a small but quality 10 incher.

it's true that you are gonna want a good stage up front, but you also have to have a proper install to get the best effect. apparently keeping the tweeter close to the drive ris the best way to go, as opposed to mounting the driver in the bottom corner and the tweet up top.

i would say that a decent pair of 4x6's are okay out back for rear-fill.

i used infinity's up front for a while ant they are okay,

i still have them in my car back home if you want, they are used but i never had a problem.

JVC has a good and cheap mp3 deck.

be sure to amp your components. you can run your rears of your deck if you must, but you will be asking alot from you deck to put out sufficient power to your components and your rears, in addition to playing cd's for long perioids of time in warmer weather. especially considering it is all in a single DIN chassis.

definately amp it all. perhaps a 4 channel amp, bridge the sub(s) and run your components off the remaining channels.

Thats a pretty nice head unit.. the only complaint i have is that the display area is fairly small. Ohh.. and about the sub.. your definitly wanna get at least a nice 10" and get a crossover if the headunit doesnt have a sub output. That way you can just have pure trebble comming out your speakers to hit those crisp clean highs.

You should definately amp the components. Try http://www.buyloud.com/ and http://www.crutchfield.com/ for the amp. Buyloud usually has good deals on a lot of stuff. Also, do you have a hatch or a coupe??? If you have a hatch a sub would be a LOT more noticable than in a coupe. Mostly cause there is more accessable air for it to move and cause the soundwaves aren't blocked off. But you can get a good(enough) 15" sub for around $200. And an amp for around $1-200. I had a 15" Memphis with a MTX amp running 140watts at 4-ohms and it sounded good(enough to make the rear-view mirror not useable). This was in a Taurus . After my bro broke that car we stuck it in my friends hatch. WAY LOUDER.
If you don't wanna get a sub get the 6-1/2 and find a way to mount them. They will fill out the low-end better. If you have anymore specific questions I would like to help answer them. ASK AWAY!

Yea. I am pretty sure that all Pioneer headunits from the past couple years have subwoofer outputs, as well as a built-in crossover.
I really have to agree that pure bass from subs and pure treble from speakers is the way to go.

dont forget the mids guys! i have components running off my pioneer head unit the mosfet 45 version, and they sound better than others i've heard, i would, before u go buy an amp for them listen to them with the head unit, if ur gonna get a sub u only need the cd player to play mids and highs to the speakers, and u wont be asking too much from the head unit it will work fine with that setup, u can play it nice and loud without worrying about the head unit, i run my system all day long and have never had my cd player shut down on me or anythign so i dunno about other people tho, so yeah, with the sub turned off the components sounds wonderful since they dont have to produce any bass, and midrange and highs are much more effiecient than bass, not requiring tremendous amounts of power

my advice to you, is drop pioneer out of the line up. yes pioneer was one of the first to technologicly advance in the audio market, but that was then... i have a pioneer head unit, and i wish i wouldn't have bought it. it does its purpose, but i just wonder why and how i got suckered in to buy a pioneer. most of my friends have pioneer... and have had problems with them. well... i dunno. i guess since you're going with a better model, you might get waht you pay for, but i'd say your best bet is clarion. the local audio stores sell more pioneer decks, but they claim for pioneers to push more of a lower fidelity (not sure on the spelling) and muffled sound. i'm about to buy a clarion dxz-825... i've heard it with various set-ups and it rocks...but like i said, i have no idea about that model. so really man, if you want to cough of the dough and are certain about it do it... but from a curent pioneer owner beware.

i have the alpine cda 7995, and i like it alot, no complants, total for it came to about 400 with shipping, and i have a marathon amp (like 2 years old, and the company does exist anymore) and it does the job, and an eclipse componet set up front, nothing in the rear, plan on doing a custom fiber glass install in the back with 1 or 2 12's, most likely one to keep wieght down, my plan right now is to take the back seat out and make something there that looks like a seat, but all custom fiberglass...but like the other people said i would have a amp running everything, my deck doesnt even have a built in amp (you need an amp for the highs, there is no speaker outputs) i would say that clarion or alpine, those are my favorites, i have also heard good things about the new panasonics, but i dont know from experience, i used to have the clarion 8575 HU, and im either going US amps, crossfire, or alpine...oh and i really like my componet set, very clear and crisp...
